So I was running a modestly successful HOPr (Beogh, naturally) and obtained spellcasting. Ran back to Temple, decided to learn blink - had to lean on the repeat key in order to do it. Eventually it stuck, and decided to practice casting it to get some skill in it before resuming my crawling. Leaned on the key again and then...
I'm suddenly in the abyss?
Is this a normal possible byproduct of miscasting (uncontrolled) blink? Haven't been able to find this side effect in any documentation or online. It's also possible I leaned on my spell macro (zat) instead of key repeat. I don't what that could've done. I considered maybe it accidentally renounced my religion, but I don't think that results in banishment.
Want to make sure that I know the potential risks of casting/zapping blink and/or other forms of teleport before I use it in the future. (The abyss was fun while it lasted, but I didn't last too long. :P) Thanks a bunch!

So banishment is certainly one of the results of a translocation miscast, and that's what happened to you. There is a broader lesson here, though: miscasts in general are actually quite dangerous, and spells that you're going to cast over and over to train a skill should be spells which you have very high success rate with.

My level 27 MDFi is trying to learn blink. He constantly gets sent to the Abyss. Incidently thats how he escaped Pan. I guess you dont cast it on "Useless". Try casting a safer level 1 spell, until you get spellcasting higher. I assume wearing rings of +Int helps success rates?

+Int helps, but nowhere near as much as the bonus from wizardry or an appropriate staff, unless it's a big +Int bonus.
Since you're talking MDFi, I'm betting you're wearing some decently heavy armour (as in large EV penalty), and probably a shield. Armour severely penalizes spellcasting based on its EV penalty (with this penalty mitigated somewhat by your Armour skill, I believe), and a shield effectively reduces your Int for spellcasting purposes (don't know if the Shields skill helps with this).
Training spells (both the Spellcasting skill and individual schools) for a fighter-type generally requires the removal of armour and shields until the appropriate skills get up to higher levels. It's possible, though...I once had a MDPa that had Excellent success with Mystic Blast, while wearing his storm dragon armour and dwarven shield. However, it took 15 Int, 13 Armour, 15 Shields, 11 Spellcasting, and 17 Conjurations to get to that point, and getting those last two skills that high required stripping naked for the first 6 or 7 levels.
A success rate less than Fair is asking for a bad miscast result. Even Fair can be risky with some schools. (Conjurations isn't so bad, especially for a fighter-type...you have the HP to withstand blowing yourself up.) There's a reason why a lot of fantasy literature has the spellcasters be loners...they want to be alone while recovering from the effects of messing up the spells that they're still working on mastering!

Ha, I completly forgot about the armour penalty. I generally play dodge based players. I guess my crystal plate armour and large shield might have something to do with it...
