Sometimes I just hate this game...

Not because of dying in the first ten turns by testing out this staff
on a rat, who became a red daemon...

Or the grid bugs killing me around a corner in two turns (I just got
used to it...)

This time I found speed boots and a mirror shield on the first floor.
I had much fun using the boots, slapping folks and running away. I
even had a long dance with a self-made large turtleoid (ex-rat... mmh,
I should stop testing staffs on rats, bad karma...) and stopped after
around 100 turns because its condition just oscillated between good
shape and poor shape. I could keep on for a long time, because I could
endure hunger, but I wanted to do something else.

So I entered the zombie-lair and had some fun with these. Because of
the mirror shield I even dared to open the private quarters and got a
short guided tour through the lair by its landlord.

Next level (number four, if I remember correctly) there was some small
island surrounded by water tiles. Mmh... I know that. But I have a
mirror shield... So, I jumped in the water and got frozen... Arg... I
thought the shield would protect me, but again got frozen, and
again... and I teleported to survive... and was rematerialized five
tiles north, under water - again. And got frozen... and drowned...

Remember: Mirror shields under water doesn't help (makes sense...
afterwards)

I don't usually test wands on monsters - I mostly target items and
myself.

Without H'Ruth's food skills, I find hit-and-run tactics hard to keep
up in POWDER. I've been trying to get a mage and/or rogue off the
ground, but their roundabout way of killing things seems to be too
time - and thus food - intensive. I'm probably doing something wrong,
though. ^_^

I think it was very brave of you to be jumping into the water fully
equipped. =D

When dealing with gridbugs, it's best to get them in line to attack
and kill it early. Eat the corpse, then you'll likely be grid-bug
proof for the next several dozen turns or so to kill more gridbugs
(tip, don't eat mice, fire beatles, slugs or snakes unless you're
doing it out of desparation or for resistances... Endure Hunger is
only needed for Pax runs, so it's best to ggnore it and go for
something you have at hand that would be more useful).

I hate ghosts as well. They take too long to kill. If you have see
invisible, you could get two of them to infight if one casts cold bolt
in the right direction. The other idea is to nuke them where they
stand with a wand or with spells. You could have also equiped the
mirror shield in your main hand (IT'S SILVER!) and beat them down with
that instead (they'll be cold touching you when they're within an
adjacent square, so it's best to just beat them with the shield).

When you have a mirror shield or an amulet of reflect, I recommend you
immediately turn into a battle-mage. You'll eventually have 2 to 4 of
the gods on your side depending on how balanced (well armoured/healed)
you keep your play style. You're not gonna have Pax or H'ruth any time
soon, however.
