I'm not sure how much interest this will garner, but I used DOS
Recorder to record a game I just played with a High Elf Crusader from
turn one to his death. The player for the files is included in the .zip
file. I only included the Win32 version, but you can download the linux
and DOS versions at the DOS Recorder link below.

Play time : 01:34:21
Turns : 16533

I hope that it might be useful for beginners to see an experienced(but
by no means expert!) Crawl player's strategy and tactics.

I also hope that this will encourage expert players to record their
games so the rest of us can admire their brilliance =P.

DOS Recorder is very simple to use and it creates small files because
it only records text, colours and delays from the Crawl console.

This is awesome, where did you get the idea to record a game? ;) ;) ;)

I'm really impressed. Especially that you didn't give up and start again
after fighting Terence with no weapon wielded, fizzling away multiple
castings of Fire Brand.

It's very interesting to see that your playstyle with HECrs is very,
very different from mine. I start training up those enchantments pretty
much from the moment I hit level 2. Maybe that's why my HECrs can never
cross the Midgame Treshold.

Haha, you mean impressed that I didn't just quit out of embarassment?

"Fire Brand."
"I said Fire Brand!"
"Oh Sh... BERSERK!"

Moments after I mowed down a perplexed Terrence, I realized I was
fighting unarmed because I had left my sabre unequipped after a wield
test run.

Well, I don't know much about how to run HECr's, so your style is
likely superior. They seem like a good choice for a character to clear
the Tomb and Hells(if I ever get that far) since I'm not a big fan of
Conjurers or Summoners. I don't have the heart to play another Ghoul
Fighter after my last one(26th Level, Extraordinary equipment, three
runes and a Nethack-like set of resistances) died from carelessness in
the Slime Pits.

Yes, quite. I have experienced similar situations several times myself,
and thus the first thing I chekced when you were moving off after your
wield-test was whether you had something wielded. I was all "Oh, I wish
I were watching this over his shoulder as he played, then I could warn him!

Well, you would most likely have survived the hydra encounter if you'd
noticed your scimitar going out as you were fighting it. And you were
starting to take off, what with the long blade and all. I don't think my
playstyle is superior.

I'm not sure if anyone is interested in another one of these, but since
my second victory I recorded 44,000 turns with a Spriggan Venom Mage:

http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=18CDC0785A440C39

He is still alive about 30,000 turns later, but the game becomes pretty
boring after clearing the Snake Pits(14,000 turns gathering robes and
digging using Summon Elemental to find the Swamp.

Anyway, everyone let me know if you think these are a good idea or bad
idea or what. I hope that they can be of great help to beginners as
they show a lot of tactics and strategy that it took me hundreds of
games to learn.

Incidentally, I'm filming and annotating the life of c the MiBe right
now, with the intention of illustrating good-quality (I hope) play all
the way up until victory. What I'd really like is to have this, and
definitely also other and others', sets of movies up somewhere as a
permanent resource. ("Sets" above because any really long filming will
tend to involve multiple sessions for some users, thus multiple films.)

Is there anybody who could offer such films a permanent home?

Correction: He *was* still alive. I failed to notice he had his staff
of conjuration unequipped after being ambushed in the middle of
dissecting by centaur warriors.

Oh well, better luck next time. I found this character extremely
tedious after awhile--the endless repetition and micromanagement led to
my mistakes in the final battle. In more patient hands I think
Spriggans are a very powerful race.

Cool, I thought about annotating mine as well, but I didn't think
there'd be enough interest to make it worth my while. I can't wait to
see what you come up with--any chance of a serial release?

How much would it cost/how much time would it be for me to set up a web
site? It shouldn't be too much bandwidth even though the files will be
a few MB each.

Actually, come to think of it, Angelfire is still around, is free
hosting, and has gradually become reasonable for small downloads
(compared to today's graphical monsters). Darshan's site has actually
run on Angelfire and offered the Patch binary, etc. for download for
several years. I even have a space on Angelfire; I've just never used
it. (May not be able to find/remember the access information, though.)

All of the files show up as no longer available when I try to download
them from yousendit. Did something happen?

Hmmm, I think they get deleted every 100 downloads or 7 days. Here are
fresh links as a temporary solution:

Hippo the HECr Video

http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=4EECF13F3615F827

Spurn the SpVM

http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=396DFD641FCA1248

Hopefully I can get some sort of web hosting set up soon...Angelfire
will not recognize my login:pass for some reasone even though I'm
positive I entered it correctly.

Please tell me this is almost complete :) I might be able to find hosting
for you, althought its pretty trivial to find it on your own these days,
seems like lots of people are offering hosting.
