So, Barbarian mostly, and I ascended before my husband. It didn't
actually take me 7 hours, I kept stopping to do things like... shop...
and feed kids. On the off chance that I may manage to make it past
lvl 1 as a wizard, I might try that next.

So to add to the epic saga, here are some of the things that I
learned:

I found my first artifact of position known on a little island across
a lake of acid after I killed some slugs. This was fun because I was
safely on my island and all the many creatures that came for either
dissolved on the way or fought each other to death. I threw a few
potions and had to kill a ghost, but nothing else made it to me.

My husband was watching over my shoulder and he noticed that the water
elemental I had killed left a corpse. He suggested I eat it to see
what would happen. What happens is that it strangles you. I don't
know how long it takes to wear off, but I started with almost full
health, got down to 40 or so when one of the Gods mended me and still
ended up dying and using up my amulet of lifesaving.

If you drop a long sword in lava it will light on fire and be flaming.
but you have to dive to get it. and if you are being chased by a water
elemental it will catch on fire in the lava and use down pour to put
itself out which solidifies the lava and makes your named flaming
sword of fire resistance unreachable.... My husband assures me that
using the dig spell could have gotten it, but I didn't have dig and
H'ruth was already mad at me.

Also at my Husband's suggestion, when I killed the guy at the end I
ate his corpse. This gives you silver allergy, probably a no-brainer,
but normally my husband does not try to get me killed this often.
This rendered my silver dagger of poison resistance and my silver
circlet of water walking, warning and stoning resist unusable for the
trip back up.

I'm fairly sure my husband was not so subtly trying to off my
character.... Normally he has very good advice for game play. But he
has not yet ascended and I take GREAT satisfaction in knowing that I
made it first!

It takes quite a while, although the duration is randomized by a large
amount IIRC. I know I learnt that lesson the hard way. Good thing you
had that amulet.

No digging wands either? In any case a somewhat safer idea is to drop
an empty bottle or two into the fire to get a potion of greek fire,
not so important if you can't get them back. Then dip the sword into
the fire.

You probably should have stopped taking his advice after the water
elemental ;)

Acid is always useful... Everywhere.

If it looks like the jelly in those cups, don't eat it. If you husband
tells you to eat it, don't eat it. If you don't know what it does,
don't eat it. If you have a gridbug corpse... Different story. Eat it.

It's best to waste items you won't ever use (if you don't use arrows,
split the stacks) to dip in various potions. Once you've established
all the IDable potions this way (acid, poison, cure poison, insight)
you can start going in there with long swords (or even artifact long
swords) to find greek fire.

I second garron. There are also a couple of other things that give
silver allergies... Though I tend to not eat them due to how annoying/
dangerous they are.

Congrats. Be glad it wasn't a horror story where you got strangled by
your shoelaces.
