Well, since 2011 was such a good year for roguelikes, what's everyone
planning for 2012? There was a prediction on the Roguelike Radio
podcast that this might be the year when Shockfrost releases his grand
roguelike, which will in turn result in the collapse of civilisation
as we know it (as per the Mayan prophecies). My further predictions
for the year:

- A record number of 7DRL participants, though with many new entrants
there will be a higher failure rate
- A record number of releases across the year as a whole, as per the
ongoing trends
- Several commercial indie games which are either semi-roguelikes
(real-time etc) or which borrow roguelike elements
- Lots of debate over whether Diablo 3 is a roguelike or not
(including unending debate over what classifies as a roguelike) and
general moaning about Blizzard's latest hit
- Scene will be dominated by big releases from DoomRL, DCSS and
ToME4, and ongoing development of JADE, but on the sidelines will be
some cool new smaller games and refinement of the likes of Cataclysm
and Infra Arcana

My own plans are mostly around choosing a good 7DRL to concentrate on,
and maybe finally getting around to doing serious work on Gruesome. I
tell myself that every year though :(

I hope the 7DRL and IRDC things get sorted too so I can make plans.
Any appetite for holding the IRDC in London? I'm living there now and
could try to help with hosting, etc.

London? I'm in!

By then I might have ArenaRL ready for release as well.
(Here's to hoping.)

Cheers,
Mario

There'll be a big DRL release on February 20 (or around it) ;).

I'd go for it, but someone would need to remind me off-list.

I've been lurking here since '96 (damn.. Is there a price for longest
lurking?), so the Mayan calendar predicts my roguelike too :)

I probably can be there too, if the date is good :)

I'll keep releasing new versions of Dweller with a clear goal of "closing" the project during the year. I've worked on the damn game for too long and recently been outrun by the likes of Legends of Yore...

I missed the 2011 one even though it was in Sweden (my second child was born just two weeks later so I couldn't really risk running off to a conference so close to expected delivery date).

I would love to join for an IRDC in London!

I would add brogue to that list.

I'm working on my project, hopefully I'll get a release before the 7DRL challenge (lots of stuff going on in RL right now), with plans on getting it to 1.0 before the end of the year. That would be something, considering it's my first programming and game dev project :].
Last few years has been amazing for both roguelike scene and greater indie game development, so I can only hope for more growth, more amazing games, and more and more people coming to love the genre. With initiatives to promote accessible UIs it is reasonable to predict more and more people playing roguelikes and 'roguelike-ish' features bleeding into other games as they become more popular. These are really exciting times we're witnessing, and bright future is before us :]

I will create a great 7DRL and then place a 3rd place Roguelike of the
