I'm quite young so if that gets be shunned from the Rougelike crowd I can live with that.I attempting to make a Rougelike (Or maybe a Rougelikelike at the least). I've already sorted out a Map Algorithm which I've included lots of different parameters to give different dungeons and dungeon floors different feels.
Screen Shot: http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd243/kaimonkey_pkmn/ScreenShot.png

As you can see I'm using a tiles (But Ascii can be turned on/off) and I will be using various other graphics throughout the project.

The problem is that the only person I know who's willing to do graphics for the project has a full-on hatred for anything Fantasy. Which is annoyingly, the setting of most Rougelikes.
This means if I want to get free art for my project from a friend I most choose a setting that not Fantasy...

Just to clear up I'm planning to have:
Multiple dungeons as apposed to one big/infinite one.
Optional Permadeath
any kind of Combat System as nothing other than the Map Algorthm and Rendering has been started.

Thanks for your Help
Kai :)

Set text to 80 columns please. And welcome aboard, screenshot looks
nice!

PS: it is roguelike, not rougelike.

Well, science fiction is probably the nearest thing to fantasy. You can
use a lot of similar concepts, i.e. you can wield a blaster instead of a
wand of fireball, use 'programming' magic to summon and control robots,
use 'psionic' magic to hypnoptise enemies or cast illusions, etc... And
for dungeons you can have abandoned space stations or what not.

I don't know what that means and my google-fu isn't helping me...

Okay now I just feel silly, I've been mis reading that for ages :)

Yes that was my thought but I'm hoping that won't be too generic for him.

Thanks for the help,

Really, I can't understand why anybody still does fantasy roguelikes with
that much stuff to choose from :)

There's a flaw in your logic.

I think fantasy is just more evocative for the majority of people - both

Traditional newsreaders (read: anything other than Google's
standards-violating web interface) don't word-wrap text.
That means that, since Google doesn't do it for you, you need
to hit Enter after every 70-odd characters to keep everyone
else from having to scroll sideways.

Alternatively, you could get a real newsfeed (some ISPs still
have their own, and http://www.eternal-september.org/ offers
a free one) and a real newsreader, so that you see what the
rest of us see.

It isn't helped by the fact that trying to find any newsreader that
isn't textmode and doesn't suck is next to impossible.

Fantasy includes magic, which for gameplay purposes allows a lot of
player and monster powers that you can be creative with. Also allows
pure monster enemies to wail on (a reason why zombies are also a
popular theme). Plus culturally it's a predominant and recognisable
setting. You have a good idea of what an orc is in every game you
play.

Only in the vague sense of "ugly humanoids with a propensity for
violence". Compare D&D orcs (ugly violent pig-snouted hooligans),
Tolkienian orcs (swarthy skulking ugly bullies), and Warhammer orcs
(bright green football hooligans).

Fallacy - You did not address the number of Roguelikes of each genre
category, only the possible genre categories.[/debate]

Those three categories, however, include most orcs in modern fiction.

I just came back to Usenet... have Google actually changed matters so it's
effectively _impossible_ to post unmangled articles? What a nuisance.
