I'm sure (or at least I hope) that many of you have heard of the
roguelike Xenocide ( http://xeno.chaosforge.org/ ) by Jakub Debski
( http://www.alamak0ta.republika.pl/ ). Xenocide, although playable
(and an excellent roguelike) was never fully completed, but I am
intent on seeing it so. I recently talked with Jakub Debski, and he as
well would enjoy finishing it. The problem, however, is that he
doesn't have an abundance of time, nor any real help with the project.
So I ask this community, to check out Xenocide (and perhaps the rest
of Jakub's projects), develope a personal opinion, and if you have any
talent at coding (C++ I believe), music (scifi themed), or spriting/
graphics (He told me he would eventually like to incorporate bitmap
brothers speedball style graphics) I encourage you to email Jakub at
debski...@wp.pl if you are willing to lend a hand.

(I am going to spend time making a website to attract RL developers
later when I have the time. Feel free to make your own though)

Thanks for your time, please try Xenocide and give it some thought

I'm afraid most of the community here has a rougelike of their own
that they don't have time or energy to work on. So your luck finding
an enthusiast with the time to work on someone *else's* roguelike may
be limited. But...

Have you considered that you might be the hero that Xenocide needs?
You can get the tools you need, and you certainly have the passion.
Perhaps you can take up the mantle and finish the game that you long
to play!

Heh, don't give up and stay determined! For music, http://roguebard.eptalys.net/
ya might give these folks a shot.
Otherwise, I agree it isn't a bad idea to try and gain the necessary
skills.

However, should this project still be hanging in there somewhere aways
down the line...I'd likely be interested in doing some various helping
as this notion is one I've already had for a little while now. Check
in the general board at Roguetemple as it is a bit much to go into
here the way I aim to approach the entire lot of it.

I played that game quite a bit some months ago, really nice. Seeing
that movie makes me wanna go back. And change the setting of my RL to
sci-fi :) Jakub, are you sure you don't want to develop it anymore? I
mean, my game is on hiatus right now, some times are better than
others, but I'm not calling it quits just yet...

I really liked xenocide a couple of years ago, when it was still
actively developed, and I could definitely see myself writing some
patches. The only issues I have is that the sources still contain
comments in Polish, and that there is no roadmap or whishlist of any
kind. I think that those two problems should be addressed first if
you'd like to convince people to participate or even to take over
mantainance.

Also, xenocide is one of the few ascii roguelikes with both a unique,
stylish look, and great clarity (I love the cyan-coloured levels, and
the sliding doors). If I were to decide, I'd leave the graphics as
they are, and concentrate in gameplay improvements. The messaging
system for example could need an overhaul.

I did an upload of developement package:
www.alamak0ta.republika.pl/xeno-dev.zip

It contains the mail archive from the Dev group:
http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/XenocideDevelopment/

A kind of road map and ideas are there.

This is true. The gameplay is the most important in roguelikes.
With good gameplay artists will join this project (take a look at the
Powder).

I would love to, however I'm out of time for such a large project...
