menu.

I really like the direction these releases are going in, but I'm a
little disappointed -- when will those of us who've been using DOSBox
get in on all the new goodness?

I'm afraid I've discontinued the DOS version when I switched to Win32.
There's just too many coding differences between the two versions,
which would require too much fiddling about to get both versions to
work with every new release. Instead, I'm going to compile Linux and
(in time) Mac versions in addition to the Win32 version. This
shouldn't be too hard, as I'm using FreePascal with SDL for both
screen, input, music and sounds. I don't think I'm using any system
dependent functions at all. Anyway, which OS are you running on? If
you're on Linux, I believe you can just use WINE to run the game.
Excellent! When did the previous version crash for you? When you were
flying in space through asteroid fields?
I'm on OSX -- I'll take a stab at running Ascii Sector in WINE. Also,
I'm happy to help in any way I can with porting it to the Mac. I know
very little about FreePascal, but I have lots of experience with SDL
in other languages. At the very least, I can serve as some sort of
guinea pig :)

Great. Let me know if you're successful!
It will be a while before I start working on the Mac version. I want
to get a Linux version working first, which should be a lot easier as
I've got Xubuntu installed on my laptop along with XP, but haven't got
a Mac. I might buy a cheap Mac for compiling the Mac version. Anyway,
it would be great to use you as a guinea pig when I get that far. :)
On take-off. It was a while ago, running the DOS version in DOSbox. I
see you've discontinued that version, but whatever DOS version is most
recent is the one that does not crash on me immediately. I'll keep an
eye out for your first Linux release. It seems pretty fun (although I
may still be Privateered-out).
Kudos for taking our genre in such a new direction. I can't wait for
V1!. I only recently discovered the Privateer game so it's still quite
new for me. I love the display and how it resembles the original game
and yet is still identifiable as a Roguelike in many ways. I'm going
to stop now before this post gets to crawly.
Did you run the game with LOADHIGH in DOSBox?
Wow. Thanks for all the kind word. I'm glad you like it!
That seems to avoid most of the crashes. It runs a bit slower, though.
(This is in the manual as well as on the "How to run the game in
DOSBox" section of the website.)
I guess I should have done more background research.
