Hey, it's been a while since I mentioned Cataclysm around here, but I
recently released an update which might widen its appeal a little bit.

Cataclysm is an open-ended apocalypse survival roguelike, with a near-
future setting and an unbounded world.

This new update brings Defense Mode to Cataclysm--turning it from a
sandbox game with no goals outside of survival to a coffeebreak
roguelike that will generally last no longer than 15 minutes or so.

Defense Mode sees the player defending their diesel generator from a
never-ending wave of monsters. It's fully configurable, and has
several preset settings--defend a bar from throngs of slowly-moving
zombies in Shaun of the Dead mode, keep the hospital safe from robotic
assassins in Skynet mode, or defend your mansion from Lovecraftian
horrors in Call of Cthulhu mode.

As it is a near-future setting, Cataclysm is strongly focused on items
and guns; real-world firearms like the MP5 or TDI Vector, grenades,
flashbangs, methamphetamine, and kevlar vests.

Defense Mode retains the full game's crafting and construction engine,
allowing you to make a molotov cocktail, or board up the windows.
However, there is less focus on these, so even new players can jump
right in and not worry about them.

While this announcement is really about Defense Mode, the full game is
included as well. Defense Mode is a great way to dive into fast-
paced, combat-oriented gameplay, without having to worry about clean
water and a safe place to sleep, and may be a good option for
beginners.

A tutorial that teaches a few core concepts is included as well.

This is nice.

None of the keys work (except Alt+F4) on my Windows machine. (XP sp3, fully
patched, latest updates, yada yada yada.) Do you have a Windows machine
available for testing?

> Linux executable: http://whalesdev.com/cataclysm.tar.bz2

Looks good on the Linux box after about 10 seconds of testing. (Slackware
13.37, kernel 2.6.37.6.)

I don't, sadly, but others had reported it was working alright. I
apologize for the inconvenience; hopefully I'll be able to resolve
this quickly.

Apologies, posted under the wrong email.

At any rate, you should be able to work-around the Windows issue by
using vikeys in that menu-- j/k are down/up, h/l are left/right. I'll
fix it as fast as I can--got a plane flight ahead of me tomorrow
morning that I can do some work on.

Weird. My previous attempts, I could *SWEAR* that nothing worked at all...
but now that you bring it to my attention, yeah, vi keys are working. (And
once the game is loaded, arrows work fine.)

As for a Windows test machine, it might be worth your time to install ReactOS
in a vm:
http://www.reactos.org/en/download.html

Free/open source Windows clone. (You've probably heard of it.) Not ready for
prime time, but certainly good enough for testing programs on. (If it works
under ReactOS, it'll work under "real" Windows.)

Alternately, you could install Wine. Lotta source code shared between the two
projects.
