Again, this year I won't have time to participate for the full 7 days
challenge. I had, however one day to play with the idea I had some time
ago.
The POC game, The Horde, was a small remake of the old PC game
(http://groups.google.com/group/rec.games.roguelike.development/msg/2aa1e4b99228f3dd).
"Settlement" extends this idea. The game has been created with
RoguelikeLib (http://sourceforge.net/projects/roguelikelib/), which
seems to be perfect for a 7DRL.
It bases on a demo game included there.
0. Story and goal.
After a long travel your group of settlers finished a basic settlement.
The land seems to be very hostile.
The next group of colonist will arrive after a month, therefore you
have to last 30 days.
Keep at the end as much money as possible.
1. Rules
Night is scary. Especially in a distant land. Especially when the night
is full of monsters.
Defend your settlement personally or using guards, archers, fences and
pits.
To do that, you need resources. In this game we have two types of
resources: money and wood.
- Workers bring you money ($)
- Lumberjacks bring you wood (=)
In the center of your settlement there is a 'W'arehouse. It's
indestructible. Workers and lumberjacks bring there goods, so it must
be accessible for them.
You receive money selling milk. The milk comes from a 's'heeps. Sheeps
need food (%) - 'c'rops.
Workers take care about crops and sheeps, but they need houses to rest
and hide in the night.
Your people rest ONLY indoor - you are exceptional, because you rest
also outdoor.
You are responsible for placing sheeps and seeding grain. Taken crops
regenerate every morning. Cut-down trees every 7 days.
To build new objects you need resources. Resources are listed below the
name of an object on the right part of screen.
For example Fence costs you $2 and 5 pieces of wood.
Build 'h'ouses (^) for workers and lumberjacks. Extend these houses to
watch towers (T), where guards and archers can rest.
To build a guard tower you have to "build the house again", standing on
an existing house.
The game plays in the night and day cycle, which is very important,
because in the night monsters appear. To speed up time press 't'.
The game engine supports advanced shadowing techniqe... ;)
2. Monsters
There are a few types of monsters. Some of them just want your crops,
some are aggressive.
Remember that attacked monster becomes aggressive. Isolation from tasty
food also make monsters aggressive.
The color of your soldiers expresses they hit points. The darker it is,
the closer the person is to death.
3. Controls
Move your character (@) using Num-pad keys (1-9 with Num Lock on).
The rest of command is available on the right side of the screen, by
the first letter. You need the proper number of resources to buy a
selected option.
The most useful command is 't' which speed-ups time.
To remove something from the ground press space ' '. It costs you 1$.

Have fun!

Wow! This game is really cool! I look forward to playing it some more
when I get home. I played the original game The Horde (I always kept
getting killed by the first level with two big demons). And your game
is more fun at this point than the game you based it off of. I'm
having to resist the urge to start hacking on it and making the
economy more complicated. :)

Press ESCAPE to exit.

In my first game, I ended up with 4$. I managed to improve it the
second time. :)

14k? This is very impressive and makes me think that the game is too
easy... What strategy did you use?
Some balance questions:
1. Do you use guards, archers or both?
2. Do you use fences, pits or both?
3. How many workers/lumberjacks you have?
4. How far do you place guard towers from the settlement?
5. Do you use only one enterance to the settlement, or many?
What is overpowered/underpowered?

Jakub
The Horde is one of the funniest game ever created, however it was not
the first game of that kind.. The first known to me was Colony for 8bit
computers - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colony_(computer_game)
To get more attention I have created a webpage for my game:

> The Horde is one of the funniest game ever created,
Haha, true ! I still remember a couple of tunes from the game. By the
way, do you know how to get it working on modern operating systems ?
I've tried running it back before I switched to Linux, and had no luck
(winxp, win2000).
Unless something has changed, Horde can be donwloaded from The
Underdogs:
however it was not

Hmm, I remember that game ! It's funny - I also thought about making
an ASCII version of Horde, and you beat me to it. I'm going to try
Settlement this weekend. If I can get it working on Linux.

It's on the Dosbox support list. Also PC emulators (vmware/vbox,virtual
pc etc) shouldn't have problem running old DOS for it.

It should be compilable by GCC with linking to curses library.
Nothing Windows specific has been used.

You've made a good game, Jakub. Thank you.

I'd like to field this, since I'm getting similar results now.
> Some balance questions:
> 1. Do you use guards, archers or both?
Very few of either. Archers don't try hard enough to stay away from
monsters. They're a liability. Pits are more cost effective.
> 2. Do you use fences, pits or both?
Fences block my workers. Pits don't. Monsters tear down my fences
almost as quickly as my pits. But I don't need to fight anything
after day twelve or so -- I have a moat.
> 3. How many workers/lumberjacks you have?
I'll count this my next run through, but it ends up around 10/3.
> 4. How far do you place guard towers from the settlement?
I place my towers inside the settlement, so my archers have to run
farther. I try to position the moat far enough out that most monsters
will be dead before my archers can reach them, and then pick off the
few that make it in. If my towers are outside, my archers get
surrounded.
> 5. Do you use only one enterance to the settlement, or many?
I use the rats of the first few nights to tear down as many of the
starting walls as I can so my workers can tend to sheep. Fences are
worse than useless.
> What is overpowered/underpowered?
Pits are overpowered. Archers are too stupid -- otherwise archers
+guards would be a great combo. Fences are underpowered (and I can't
tear them down myself!) Lumberjacks are almost irrelevant, since I
use so little wood this way. Maybe I'll build fences around the outer
edge next time, to funnel monsters into my pits and save some money
that way.
This is my first time posting here, after visiting often. Please do
tell me if I'm violating any norms.
