I think we agree on this: I just call the one, if not 'good strategy',
then 'efficient strategy' and the other 'borg strategy'.
I don't disagree, but I think it's important to understand what the
efficient model is first, then work out the details of reaching it
from other cases.
I had a horrible time learning this game the first time, because I

There are no non-ego curses anymore. Weilding cursed armor and
weapons in the early game is extremely bad luck.

Possibly a reason why Dal-i-Thalion are not junk (not at that level) -
their activation for cure poison every 5 turns. They have helped my
warrior survive numerous packs of Air hounds (admittedly I hid round
the corner and killed most of them one at a time).

I still play 3.0.6 (and I've got a copy of 2.7.9 hanging around). If
you're uncertain about Takkaria's changes you could always revert to
an earlier version. Otherwise "development" becomes simply "bug-
fixing". I know people have worked long and hard on these updates
after wide-ranging and long-lasting discussions on these boards.

By escape I don't mean that you should run from every possible unknown
monster. I mean that you have a way to get out once you find out that
"Ouch! That hits way too badly". If you still get killed that means that
a) you didn't have escape or b) monster was an insta-killer or c) it did
have something *bad* in its sleeve that you wasn't prepared to handle

 Hi all. Happy New Year!
So I finally decided to play a game with "preserve on" and break away
from my 2.7.9 habits. Haven't posted on here in over a year; when i
first got my home pc connected to the 'net, I was a bit green about
virus issues, wound up with Trojans and Worms all over the place and

Agreed, but it still wont kill you. Not by itself. If you have borg-like
patience and you like exploring you can enjoy and learn and get deep
using slow method instead of getting frustrated by a lot of deaths. A
lot of deaths is at least as frustrating as slow advance with single
char, and slow advance might be more appealing than billion repeats of

I generally boost starting Dex to get +2 AC that way, and still have to
spend all my initial money to get an AC of 8. I do it anyway, because
it's a better investment (for those early levels) than anything else I
could spend it on, but it's still no more than half what I'd been used
to getting for the first dive in previous versions.

That last sentence bothers me, and I think it misses the point.
Playing the game is supposed to be fun.
If continuing to play won't be fun, then there's no point in playing,
and you might as well quit.
Dismissing quitting as "the coward's way out" seems rude, in that it
denigrates people who don't find a (to-them-)hopeless challenge fun.
