Everything was going great, I was blipping down to the dungeon,
sneaking around and grabbing floor loot and killing off easy pickings
to get consumables and stat potions (and the occasional artifact -
Thorin!!!) when a pack of Time Hounds decided that I should stop
taking advantage of Morgy's hospitality. :-(

Any advice for the very funny random name Caring the Half-Orc warrior?
My current goal was to get to aprox. 65 and hunt for speed - always on
the lookout for headgear in the hopes of some ESP too...

There is no guarantee it would have helped, but if you had been
wearing an amulet of infravision you might have seen the time hounds
before you had to light the room, and that might have saved you.

Another option is to abuse connected stairs. If you land in a
possibly dangerous room, reset by taking the stairs immediately, and
repeat until you don't land in a dark room.

That death was pretty unavoidable.

Only suggestion I can make is to either go slower (that's pretty fast
you have been going) and get ESP before getting into Time Hound region,
or go a lot faster IE. crash-dive to 4000' and spend as little time
between 2500' and 4000 as possible to increase possibility of getting
better gear before that happens.

Time Hounds are also my worst enemy. Those move at speed +20 which means
that when I first meet them I can't match their speed even with haste,
and that means I can't fight them one by one easily. It is very bad luck
to get them at the starting room.

I would have used Amrod instead of Amras (for CON and STR), but other
than that not much other changes.

There's not much you can do with a warrior after dl 60, without
detection and/or ESP. As Eddie says, "Infra can help a lot (and vs
'Q', even with ESP)

My recommendation is to try Rogue. I have much better luck with that
class for diving. (Ranger is good too, depending on taste.)

And maybe a hat of infravision as well, even instead of his crown of might, in
addition to an amulet. Would another +8 on infravision have saved him? We'll
never know.

This comes under detection, which really is more important than offense or
defense. That's a lesson you don't fully appreciate until you spend a lot of
time in the deeper half of the dungeon.

Thanks all for your input - I think that I will try a Rogue next.

It seems silly now, but I hadn't really considered Infravision
to be detection before. Oh well, live/die and learn! ;-)

Another thing for me to watch out for then - I won't ask what their
native depth is because if I do find out, there's sure to be an OOD
pack waiting for me on my next dive (thanks be to the RNG)!!

I'm not very good at doing this, but if you arrive in a horrible room,
you can just go back up the stairs...

I am very good at this part of the game! :-) I use connected stairs
as a great free escape mechanism - so much so that my feeling of
security on a level is a linear function of my distance from the
stairs! Many a time I've gone down stairs, seen a pack of nasties
(or one *really* nasty!) and immediately gone back up. The problem
here is that the Time Hounds were literally one square beyond my
very large (5!) light radius and so I couldn't see them until I
lit the room - the one move safety margin - at which time they
pummeled me.

Don't let this be misread as a caution against diving - the
exact same thing could have happened (and has) if I'd spent
an order of magnatude more time getting to that dl. Luck
is a part of this game and I firmly believe that diving rapidly
is the best way of skewing the distribution curve in my
favor. It also makes the trip a damn-sight more fun!

Yes! After [at least] two deaths to plasma hounds under the same
circumstances, I am not one likely to disagree. (Actually, [at least]
one of those deaths was from a bad teleportation, but who's counting?)

Doesn't help warriors, but rogues and rangers and mages have an out.
