Searching for the One Ring

My Dunadan priest killed Morgy at just over the 1 million turns mark
(my 4th winner ever, yay!), and I really, REALLY wanted to find the
one ring for a change.

So I kept diving...straight to level 127, stopping at each level only
to cast Clairvoyance and peruse the object list (okay, I did take a
detour for a certain 4d5 longsword).

For 200K turns at +30 speed I've been doing nothing but:
1) Cast Alter Reality at level 127.
2) Cast Clairvoyance
3) See that the object list doesn't contain a plain gold ring
4) Repeat.

Not a trace. Is this optimum strategy for finding it?

What object list? Can you have window that shows all known objects?

The one Ring has rarity of about 1/1000000 to find it. You can find it
but it takes time. A lot of time.

I have found all old artifacts and from new ones only Mediator is still
not found.

The One Ring isn't actually that useful if you have optimized other
gear. I have found it twice now, and second time I didn't even use it
because I already had everything I needed and then some, and aggravation
from that would have been bigger penalty than any bonus it gave.

Feanor did avoid me longest time. When I found it I didn't even
recognize it as artifact, I just thought "weird name for a new ego, lets
try it on". When my speed bounced +15 points I realized what it was.

Try killing dragons/ wyrms for treasure. Eventually you will have
found all artifacts EXCEPT the one ring. Then the next time an
artifact is generated, out it pops!

I see that Grond is still buggy in your version. It should be (+5,+25).

There is redundant information. If you have immunity, you don't need
resist. Should not have both. Looking at artifact.txt it seems that The
One Ring has both, even that those resists are not used.

In fact it looks like there are duplicates in most items with immunity:
Razorback, Tuor, Eonwe, Ulmo, Taratol, Deathwreaker, Narya, Nenya, Vilya
and The One Ring have both immunities and resists but Thorin, Gothmog
and Azaghal have only immunities.

Looks like I need to get busy making my own variant. There are few quite
annoying but small things that are easy to fix.

First thing to change is to make Chaos #1 high element again instead of
nether, and restore its side-effect immunities including other effects
causing them (both XP drain from nether and confusion from confusion
should be prevented by chaos resist, but not damage from those sources).

Then to tweak monsters and items.

Too bad I'm not coder, current vanilla code is much harder to understand
than Robert code was. I need time to figure out what certain parts of
code do and how to change them without breaking something.

Yes. I reopened the ticket for this at trac.rephial.org - I can't check the
number from work, but the title is "Morgoth arts messed up". Nobody
understands why it happens, as the code to force production of Grond and the
crown seems to be fine.

IMO, we should include rXYWZ in all game version reports (even stable)

If that appears every time it should be easy to test: just Create Troll
Warrior, activate debug-mode, make that Warrior clvl50 with maxed stats,
create impossible gear you need in order to kill M and jump to dlvl 100.
(something like PDSM, The One Ring, Thorin, Dor-Lomin and Fingolfin,
Mace of Disruption of fury (5d8) (+100,+100) (+10), Rings of Acid and
Lightning, BoS +50 and 99 potions of life, 50 scrolls of mass banishment
and *destruction* and 20 rods of teleport other)

I can do that today for rev1500 (not just now though).

I was using the 3.1.0 official release, not a nightly build. It was a
pretty old one, old enough that it had some pretty big bugs (like
inability to unwield an uncursed Calris).

Tested. Morgoth arts looks like to be OK. At least when killed in
debug-mode using heavily modified extra blows mace of disruption of
extra blows.

This is a real problem: there has not been a patch on 3.1.0, despite
several serious bugs being found. I play the dev branch 3.1.1, though
I don't update very often. This has it's own problems: game balance
remains worse than in 3.1.0

Radical idea: how about if dev-team stops "developing" and concentrate
on fixing bugs and balancing things up?

3.1.1 dev is quite good as it is, except that there are several bugs
(none of the extremely bad game-stopper bugs that 3.1.0 beta has though)
and balance is off currently. Many things in balance is only matter of
editing edit-files. You can change game pretty drastically just by
changing things in monster.txt, object.txt, ego-item.txt and
artifact.txt. (BTW. edit files help in beginning of each file needs
correcting because syntax of things have changed)

My suggestion is to reduce {good} drops from monsters and replace them
with ordinary drops. Make some drops to be huge again. Make stat-potions
more common.

If you look at older versions before JLE changes {good} and {excellent}
drops were *MUCH* rarer.

People editing game have been making it easier so long that game balance
has gone out of the window. Every small change in game has made it
slightly easier. I don't recall any changes that has made game harder.
And there has been huge amount of those small changes. Many of those
changes were in theory quite good, but consequences of those changes
were not thoroughly though over and changes in related areas were not done.

The plan (at least as far as I understand it) is that 3.0.9b is the last
stable version. The whole 3.1.x series is to be labelled 'beta', and
all the big changes are happening now; none of this series is expected
to be properly balanced. So currently, for players, the choice is to
play the old, but stable version, or the new, but less stable, version.

This can, of course, be a bit frustrating for people who want the new
stuff _and_ stability. On the other hand, I'm sure that somebody who
cared enough could patch 3.1.0 with the fixes currently in 3.1.1dev. I
would tend to argue, though, that the people who are currently working
on getting the dev version toward a new, stable state are better
employed doing that than fixing 3.1.0.

Problem with 3.1.0 beta is that it is main download in rephial.org in
both main "play" -page and in "releases" -page, so people download it,
not the older stable release. Either remove that main download status
from that beta-version or release fixed version of 3.1.0.

There are two main problems to fix in 3.1.0beta: Heavy Curses are in
reality permanent (dispel curse, enchanting to break curse and *remove
curse* say that they removed the curse, but nothing happens) which is
game-stopper bad bug (easy to fix though, one-liner) and Morgoth Arts
are messed up (which doesn't really matter much). Also branding rings do
not give info that they give brand to melee-weapons, but that is minor.

At least that Heavy Curse -bug should be fixed, because it effectively
makes Calris and other Heavy Curse -items unwieldable and your game gets
ruined for good. Even crash is better because those don't usually mess
your savefile.

So with a bit of luck we should see 3.1.1 in a matter of weeks now.

Then I can get on with breaking trunk again.

Those are only coding changes. He also said to me that he will check and
fix some balance-issues by going thru monster list, and that should take
more time (unless he practically needs to recode everything Eddie did).

There is one MAJOR balance issue in 3.1.1: stats are even harder to
come by than in 3.1.0, because you only gain 1 point per potion.
Please, please, please, revert this change prior to releasing 3.1.1.
I understand that there's a long term plan for stats, but in a real
release, the change to weaker stat potions needs to be atomic with a
counterbalancing effect.

Noticed that when I downloaded 3.1.0beta again in order to check if that
game-ruining curse-bug has been corrected or not. It hasn't.

This update-policy takkaria is using needs correcting. Even if milestone
is finished it should get fixes for bugs if next release is weeks away.
This 3.1.0 beta is over half year old now. BUG FIXES. Not development.
All releases until next is released should get bug fixes, and if next
release is more badly unbalanced even after that.

It actually wasn't changed to make the game easier; it was changed to
make elemental rings have some purpose, and to increase the variety of
gear people could make meaningful choices about. I think there's a fair
range of opinion on whether it's worked or not. I'll be looking again
at these in the balace-up of 3.1.2, though, possibly removing, or
possibly toning down the multipler they use.

That there is controversy over whether those rings are now overpowered
seems to me to mean that it worked. The controversy is that it may have
worked too well.
