Using angband-3.0.8-win.zip

Pressing ESC does not back out fully when buying an item
in a store.

To duplicate this:

Start buying an item in a shop.

The prompt [ESC, any other key to accept] shows once any
viable number beyond 0 is accepted.

If I press 1, for example, and then Enter, but then
change my mind, pressing ESC does not allow me to exit from
the quantity selection dialog.

I'm forced to enter quantity 0 to exit the purchase dialog.

I can't reproduce. If I'm understanding you right, the following is the
behaviour you get:

1. Buy an item which the store has a stack of
2. At the quantity dialogue, press Escape
3. Nothing happens.

If not, please could you clarify?

Yes that is the problem. It also forces me to purchase
an item if there is only one (not a stack), as the the
ESC isn't/wasn't functioning properly in the store menu's.

After more testing on other win machines.

On Win XP sp2 platform this (ESC) issue does not appear.
On Win 98 platform (ESC) in stores doesn't back out of
buying dialog in stores.

I know it's a silly question because you would almost certainly have
already mentioned it, but does escape work everywhere else in the game?

Does backtick (the key directly beneath escape on the keyboard) work in
stores where ESC doesn't? Can you try pressing "n" instead of ESC and
seeing if that works? (I know the text says it shouldn't, but
apparently "n" or "N" are also accepted as "rejections", so that might
work as a workaround even if it isn't really a solution).

Backtick, n, and N do not work for escaping the quantity selection
prompt on 98 either. They, and ESC work fine for all the other prompts,
as far as I have noticed.

For items in a stack, the problem can be avoided by entering 0 for
the quantity.

However, for items in a store that are not in a stack (ie, a single
item), none of the keys mentioned work once an attempt to purchase
is made. The item must be purchased, and cannot be backed out.

Really? Tried pulling the plug? (Actually, SIGKILL will probably
suffice.)

If one wants to continue current game, yes.

No, that prohibits further testing of the same session.

I don't suppose this manifests with any other quantity prompts around
the game? e.g. when dropping some of a stack of arrows.

A quick test of dropping revealed ESC works fine there.

Eh. Let's see. That's S with pernicious crash and character-killer
bugs; V 3.0.8 is crawling with the population of a large termite
mound; NPP is full of if not exactly "bugs" then "balance problems"
lately (mainly relating to hydras, which used to be worse, quests, and
traps, which used to be not as bad); and there hasn't been any
development activity related to any variant except V lately. Leon's
started his next five-year hibernation (I guess he's from a planet
with a very elliptical orbit that spends five years frozen and a then
few months torrid?), the maintainers of Steam, ToME, Heng, Norse, POS,
Ey, and the like have dropped off the face of the 'net, and things
like Z and such are apparently distant memories no longer even
actively played. AFAICT the only variants getting much mention are in
descending order of frequency V (due to new version), S (due to
slightly less recent new version), NPP, O, and Steam. Just five in
total. Four that anyone's actually playing; O just comes up in
conversation, either war stories or to compare with S or suggest stuff
for the being-actively-developed V.

I don't know if the *band scene is either dead or about to have some
renaissance or another. After a string of quiet ones V has a vigorous
and unconservative maintainer -- which might actually prove to be a
bad thing. V might lose its V-ness or something. The Z/ToME/friends
branch of the family tree was for a decade consistently hugely active,
and is lately as quiet as the grave. There are very few actively
maintained variants AFAICT, and those that are are mostly on very long
cycles of nothing happening with the odd, sparse new releases (S and
NPP come to mind). Recently very active and promising but incomplete
ones like Norse and POS appear to have died in the cradle.

Hell, even the regulars with itchy trigger fingers can't be bothered
to do more than make the odd half-hearted attempt to provoke a
flamewar with me, and then quickly think better of it and not escalate
things!

You missed out FA and Un which are still strong on the development side,
Portralis, T.o.M.E and Furyband which have plenty of players. You probably also
haven't visited the forums from angband.oook.cz - and you definitely haven't
looked at the amount of code and interface changes that V has undergone between
3.0.6 and 3.0.8. I'm not surprised that there are bugs as a result.

Actually, I've not seen any mention of FA here for a while, and Un
mentioned in passing like O, mainly to compare or get ideas from its
id system. I haven't seen player war stories or char dumps from
anything but V, NPP, and S lately, with one Steam one a short time
ago.

If they do, you would never guess it from the (lack of) postings in
rgra...

I'm aware 3.0.8 has big changes as they've been mentioned here a time
or ten thousand. Bugs are indeed to be expected; doesn't mean I'm not
correct in noting that the bugs are there. :)

Looking at character dumps on angband.oook.cz for the last week - excluding the
spamming of Zangband dumps by one person (which would skew the sample):

Angband 4
ToME 4
Zangband 1
Faangband 2
Furyband 1

I'll agree that the angband.oook.cz is a self-selecting sample, but its another
indicator of what variants are being played.

It shows some ToME playing and a little Z, FA, and Fury. But nobody
posts about those variants much anymore. A crying shame.

As for the self-selecting sample, so is what variants get posted about
here, or just about any sampling of peoples' participation in
something online. Download tracking might give a different sample,
but:
* People who play the game won't necessarily get counted, since *bands
are fairly freely redistributable so there's no central source
everyone gets it from. Variant official site downloads would come
close to giving some number that might make sense though.
* People get counted who try a variant once and discard it, or
download it and forget to even try it.
* Heavy/avid players get counted maybe once per version release, about
the same as light players.

There may not be many posts on rgra, but there is certainly FA chatter both
within the ladder comments and on the forum.

For FA at least, there's probably more comments on the angband.oook.cz ladder
than anywhere else...

I really must try V again one of these days, though - I don't think I've played
it since 2.9.2 or so - so a lot of the jewellery and spell systems are
completely new to me...

Google groups is a small pile of doggie doo. Use aioe if your internet

These days I'm actually starting to be tempted to. I don't like the
idea of a 25-post-a-day limit though. When a flamewar erupts with more
than 25 attack posts targeting me per day I'll be forced to defend
myself with one hand tied behind my back. At least with Google I can
manufacture an unlimited number of sock puppet accounts like Nebulous
to get around Google's equally-horribly-low limit. I have no
confidence it's as easy to do this with aioe.

You mean, you can get an account if you have $10, a credit card, and
willingness to jump through God knows what hoops (likely including
currency conversion, or even spoofing what country you're actually in
if they decide to discriminate on the basis of geography like some pay/
ecommerce sites do).

I have the $10 but not the rest -- sorry. Until there's an easy*,
safe**, universal***, and non-credit-requiring**** way to buy stuff
over the 'net any price above zero zeroty-zero is more than I can
afford to pay online. :P

* As in, anyone in the world who has $X and a net connection can
easily set it up and put the $X in.
** As in, you risk at most the $X you explicitly put into it, and
there are ways to dispute charges or it ensures you see before you hit
accept the real amount that will be deducted, say using strong crypto
of some sort. Also, no personal information is required to simply
put money in and later spend that amount online. You go to their
branch office and hand over the money in exchange for some crypto
codes. Later you use these on a site to pay, and they can charge up to
the amount of money less some small transaction fee, and your account
is decreased by the charged amount and the transaction fee. No mess,
no fuss.
*** As ubiquitous online as, say, interac is offline, plus
nationality- and currency-agnostic, doing any needed conversions
behind the scenes for customers and for merchants.
**** As in, you don't need to apply for or receive a credit card, line
of credit, or anything of that sort, or pass a credit check, or you
only do if you want to be able to overdraw/buy now and pay in
installments/whatever.

Basically what's needed is an online and fraud-resistant version of
interac. Banks should probably do it -- offer to all customers
existing a new the ability to put a certain amount of money into an
"online wallet" which they can (subject to a bank service fee) then
use online, and merchants' debiting of this money doesn't expose the
bulk of your account to risk (or even reveal any information about
your main account or your real identity). I'd like to see strong
crypto used for this, where an electronic transaction authorization
with a particular amount is sent to you, and you digitally sign it
somehow and send it on to your bank, which then performs the
transaction by transferring funds from your account to the merchant's.
In this scenario, the amount and who it really is paid to will be
visible to you. You add your own account number and digitally sign the
whole thing; the merchant never even sees your account details at all
with this implementation, nor can they ever get money from you without
you knowing and authorizing the exact amount, nor can they retain some
number that can then fall into the wrong hands, or be used again
without your explicit further authorization (so, no risk of sneakily
"agreed-to" opt-out recurring charges without you realizing what's up
and opting out after at most the second, and first unexpected,
billing).

I suspect the way the only e-merchant payment option that is close to
universal is credit cards, full of woeful security problems and
requiring getting credit and risking debt to use, must be some sort of
conspiracy, given we have good crypto and a kind of "secure e-chequing
account" functionality would be a natural system for banks and
merchants to adopt yet they don't...
