I'm trying version 1867 checked out of SVN at the moment as I wanted to have
a go with the quiver and other new features that are discussed on the list
and the forums. I'm really enjoying what I've found so far. However, I've
found two behaviours that aren't expected.
The first is that if I try to (o)pen a square that isn't a door, I get 100
retries of it automatically which obviously never succeed. I've got round
my clumsy fingers by enabling the open on movement options in the settings.
Secondly I tried throwing an unknown weapon at an enemy:
The Novice warrior is targeted.
You have no more Flails (2d6) {magical} (u).
The Flail (2d6) {magical} hits the Novice warrior.
You know more about the Flail you are using.
I tried this with a Short Bow and a Quarterstaff, and I IDed all of them by
throwing them. I'm assuming this is unintended as now I don't have to risk
any curses, providing I throw all my equipment at things. Unless it still
doesn't reveal curses, perhaps? I assume this is a side-effect of
identifying bolts or arrows in this way.
If it makes any difference that was with a Level 15 Dunadan Ranger.

This one's not intended, and I've filed a bug report on it
(http://trac.rephial.org/ticket/1064).

It only works so far-- all you're identifying are the to-hit/to-dam
bonuses, not any of the item flags. So if you threw something of
westernesse you'd not be fully IDing it. I hadn't thought of trying to
throw stuff to ID it, though, so nice lateral thinking. :)

It also strikes me that this method of (partial) ID is risky, since I
seem to recall that there's a chance for thrown items to break.
I think only ammunition can break and potions will break if they hit the
target. Not sure though.

I broke a hammer doing this. I've assumed it's therefore not an artifact :)
Currently my plan is pseudo-ID and throw magical things. If it's ego or
better then I'll just try it, but I've still got a blocked ring slot with a
-1 searching ring. Unsurprisingly no remove curses to be seen. I'm not
complaining, I found a ring of Ice at 400ft on the floor.
Also, unsurprisingly, throwing armour doesn't work. And the weapon has to
hit to be IDed.

Thanks! I'm not finding any flags left as ? on thrown items by the way.
But this distressing log may clear things up:
You see a Beaked Axe (2d6).
Your Beaked Axe of Flame flares!
The Beaked Axe (2d6) burns the Rattlesnake.
You know more about the Beaked Axe of Flame you are using.
The Rattlesnake dies.
The Beaked Axe of Flame breaks.
Found what I assume would have been an excellent or ego item, found its
brand by throwing it. And broke it. Might stop this method now...

Mushrooms (nearly) always disappear - unhealth or disease can only
inflict damage once, as far as I'm aware.
