...to win the game without using any magic -- spells or equipment --
at all?

I'm thinking that this is something a Barbarian might try to do.

Let's assume that putting the orbs into the various riftinesses
doesn't count. Where else does magic seem required?

Our hypothetical Barbarian might use Bridge Building to get to the
RotHK, and likewise to the Water Temple. For the FIre Temple, he'd
have to rely on the one-in-four chance of getting fireproofing from
crowning, since he couldn't use so much as a ring of fire resistance,
but the crowning immunity is a gift from the Gods, not magic as such.

(I suppose that one could argue that this Barbarian could also use his/
her crowning gift, plus any pre/post-crowns, on the same logical
basis.)

Does anyone think this can be done? Is it a known challenge game, and,
if so, what's it called?

How would one resist death rays? Can one drink from a pool? Is that
using magic?

And what about potions? Scrolls? Chaos resistance? You'd have to do
it pretty quickly.

There's the icy level -- equipment must be used there (so that doesn't
count either).

I think this would take a lot of planning and patience and whole heck
of a lot of luck. How many characters will you roll up and get to the
point of crowning just to find that they get ..... acid? Grr. I
swear, 20 of my last 20 characters to get to the point of crowning
have not received fire. Oh, how it frustrates me so!

Not just any barbarian. A Drakeling barbarian. Get enough health,
healing and first aid and you'd be able to buzz up the stairs, deal a
couple of hundred damage to anyone there, and buzz down again before
running out of health (or can you heal yourself with herbs?)

You'd need to be able to use non-magical equipment (e.g. to throw
rocks on the ice level) and it might be possible to argue that you can
have magic done to you by someone else (e.g. getting a certain unicorn
to help with corruption). He'd also go through a lot of pickaxes; not
being able to use wands of digging on the temples or ice magic at the
tomb of the High Kings would be a pretty serious problem corruption-
wise (it might be better to just swim across on the water temple level
instead of using bridge building).

And does using a potion of carrot juice count as magic? If not, then
which potions count as magic and which don't? Considering that
drinking a potion is an inherantly non-magical action, and that any
magic was done to in the mixing of the potion, can potions in fact be
used?

This needs to be a little bit better defined...

You don't need to cross the river in the Water Temple.

Not cross the riverin water temple? How?

And by the way, bridge building gets a bad rap, but in my current game
I was forced to learn it early (or else scum for wand of cold in the
id, no thanks), and then actually ended up using it in the tomb of
high kings. At skill 50, I made the 3 sections with 9 logs - not too
bad, and only a day so of gametime to chop down the trees.

There is a certain square you can stand on, on the east side of the water,
that allows you to shoot a diagonal 'far slaying' bolt into the main
temple. It hits the Snake, and most of the other monsters as well, though
you may have to wait a while for the Snake to come out and fight.

Luring an ogre magi to do the job is an alternative method. There is also
the method of continually recharging a wand of wonder until you learn
the frost bolt spell. You can get unlimited potions of booze from beggars
in Lawenilothehl. Just give them ~45 gold, chat with them, collect the
cursed booze, leave them in the wilderness, return, and repeat the process.
You should bless the booze for the best effect, and it should work easily
enough.

Wow, neat!

About the beggar trick: you say to leave them in the wilderness,
right? By return, do you mean have them rejoin your party, or do you
mean return back to Lawenilothelol?

Each beggar will give you only one PoB, to my knowledge. Once they are
'used up', you can get no further benefit from them. You have to do
something with them though, so more will regenerate in Lawenilothehl.
You can just kill them if you don't mind the heavy alignment hit, but
I don't like that way.

I like to lure them to the wilderness, 'use them up', name them, and just
leave them. The game will ask later if you want 'f' (or 'g' or whatever)
the beggar to rejoin your company. You can say no, or you can lure the
whole host of them to somewhere like the old barbarian's glade, and start
your own beggar colony : ) What you do with the 'used up' ones is
irrelevant.

Cool. Why do you need to name them?

Also, I can't seem to be able to test this in my game; there were no
beggars in Lawenilothehl! Also, there is a (hostile) ratling trader in
the village, and one of the cooked lizard traders is missing from the
arena. Anyway, is there any way to kickstart beggar generation?

Name them for fun's sake? I dunno. "Hey! It's Dewfapple the Poor!
How ya been ya 'ole boozehound?!"

Ratling Traders can get killed in the Arena if you do not kill all of
the monsters on the level. It may have also triggered a trap.

And yes, you can kickstart the generation ... make certain to kill all
random generated monsters (bandits, outlaws, etc.) that are roaming
around. This helps generate new ones.

It's a force of habit, mainly. Upon entering Lawenilothehl, one doesn't
usually have the gold to properly exploit the beggars, but they may have
a strong enough attack to go ahead and kill Hotzenplotz. If you don't get
them out of town before attacking Hotzenplotz, they will become hostile
to you. It's a good idea to lead all beggars, and the ratling key master,
out of town before attacking Hotz and gang. Later, when you have the
gold for beggar bribing, it's nice to know which of the wilderness beggars
have been used, and which ones are fresh : )

Just kill all the monsters on the level, beggars will be generated soon
enough.

There was a challenge a long time ago to beat the game by picking up
nothing but food, rocks, and amulets of light. Guy did it with a
hurthling monk - monks are, in general, a little more capable than
barbarians to go without equipment.
