So I just got further than I have before, but died to something that is
rather a YAAD. I got knocked down to one health by a serious hit by a
greater mimic, due to some definate misplay on my part (didn't know they can
hit that hard). No problem, right? I have a potion of ultra healing just for
such an occasion. I try to drink it, and get something like "your hands are
shaking too much to open it". Mr. Mimic takes one final smack at me and down
I go.

I haven't ever experienced failure to drink a potion in any roguelike
before, so this was a big (and irritating) surprise on me.

So my question is this: under what conditions can a potion use fail? I would
like to avoid it in the future. Next time, I'll just pray. :-P

Thanks,
Arccos

I'm pretty sure the problem was that you were stunned. There is a
teasing joke about this in the game - the potion of stun recovery
cannot be drunk when stunned :(

But yeah, prayer is best - only stops working if you're out of piety
or doomed.

Thanks for the tips. It's quite possible I was stunned, I didn't take that
into account for trying to use a potion, but definately my fault if I was.
I'll just stick with prayer then, or better yet, not get into scrapes with a
room full of greater mimics. :-)

Still, I got to see dwarftown for the first time!

Congrats.

All the recent activity here (I believe I may have seen half a dozen
posts within only two months!) inspired me to pick up ADoM again after
a few years(!). I never managed to get a wizard going, so I've tried
those.

Fifth one finally made it to CoC, and was rolling along nicely. I
expected to die either to a monster deciding to fight to death in blind
rage or by misjudging the angle on a ray spell.

I misjudged the angle with a magic missile (or rather, I wasn't
standing where I thought I was) and killed myself clearing a vault a
couple of levels below Dwarftown. Now I remember why my wizards never
got anywhere.
