The card game called Solitaire also known as Klondike vies with
FreeCell for the title of most popular solitaire game. Klondike used
to have the rules that cards are dealt one at a time with no redeals.
Sequences could not be broken apart. That version of Klondike was
extremely difficult to win. Winning a game of Klondike while playing
by the old rules was an event. With the advent of Microsoft's version
of Klondike, Klondike seems to evolved into a game where sequences can
be broken apart, cards are dealt three at a time, and there are an
infinite number of redeals. It is easy to win this new brand of
Klondike. Is the old brand of Klondike extinct? Do players that play
Klondike by hand use the old rules? One of the main attractions of the
old version of Klondike was the difficulty in winning. Winning
Klondike used to be the equivalent of climbing a steep mountain. Why
has the easy version of Klondike taken over the internet? Is it the
effect of the softening of the Western culture or is it just the
influence of Microsoft?

My grandmother called the game Canfield and it was always draw-three. Only
upon finding a solitaire game for DOS in the early 90s, did I find out it
was the title of a separate game. Though I've looked in old 1900s books on
Google Books and some of them call the game Canfield as well.
