Just curious....Does anyone here have their machines set for coin use
or maybe voluntarily use quarters for games? I guess it wouldn't be a
bad way to save a little money : )

Depends on the game. My games that are settable to free play through
switches or options are set to free play. My Mata Hari I rigged the
coin return button with a wire down to the coin acceptor switch. My
Elektra happened to have working coin mechs and is not settable, I could
rig it but I chose just to set it to 12 credits for a quarter and keep
coins around.

I have for a few years. I bought a ton of .984 tokens (mixed variety
from places all over the country) and a token dispenser that doesn't
need cash to use. brings back old arcade memories and the kids love
to drop them into the machines. Whats best is that those Tron tokens
from Disneyland's Flynn's Arcade are the 984 size and I was able to
get a bunch of those.

Only problem is that the Bellagio tokens I got don't work well with
the Happs coin mechs, so I am in the hunt still for a few more .984
Imonex ones....If anyone has a few, let me know :)

On EM's you can always jumper the replay unit for free play, but I
don't. I use nickels, dimes, and quarters just like they did in the
50's. My early '80 Bally's I have to use money since I am too cheap
to buy a chip for free play. I have a McGill 4-barrel coin changer
just like the gas station attendants had when I was a wee lad. I like
recreating the moment. Long live the 50's.

Back when I had four or five games I ran them on coin play. Now that I'm up around
20 (give or take), that's too much work.

All on Free Play as I am way too lazy to empty them. (16 games)

But I sure would enjoy winning a Free Game more if I was dropping
quarters in.

Only have one game that still has the coin mechs in it, and that one is
set for free play.

It will take nickels, dimes and quarters, and once in awhile I'll drop
one in for the hell of it. Then I open the door and take it right back
out again.

I have 40 games in my basement, and using quarters got old fast. Also
turning off all attract sounds to my games as that also got old very
quickly. I do leave my 12 pinball machines on though as they sound
cool.

Its a FAQ entry at this point, please someone enter it already.
The experience is genuine, part of the history, mystic, and actually
fun. It brings some 'value' to the game, having it set on free play is
boring and puts not sense of urgency on learning or getting good.

Absolutely, I do! All my machines are on coin play, just like when they
were on a route... back in the day. Gotta have it mean something to win
a game on a special or for reaching the replay score levels. Winning a
free game will mean little or nothing... when all you have to do is
reach down and hit the button again.

I used to do the whole put-the-quarters-in routine 30 years ago when I
started collecting. First game was a dream come true, "I really do
own a living breathing pinball of my very own -sniffle-" so naturally
the early games I always coined. Now my pins still do have working
mechs, but shi* man I have no interest in that kind of detail anymore,
I only care about it playing true to form and looking as decent as
possible. Flick the coin switch a few times and play off the
credits. My Bally slot is another story - must be around 350-400
quarters in there, no option there.

In 1983 I also used to sit in a chair with my chin propped on the
lockdown bar and just stare at each game (especially Xenon) in Game
Over/attract mode for 10-20 minutes at a time, in the dark. The deep
ol' days. : ))

People say they do because it makes the replay mean something. BS.
When you want replays to mean something, support pinball on route.

If you own a game, I don't believe the replay means that much no
matter what.

I figure with the 1up and my local bar, I am close to 400 plays so far
this year on quarter play. Getting a replay or wizard mode on a route
beater really does mean something.

Now I do have mine set to quarter play but I have a giant bucket of
quarters so it doesn't mean anything.

On a good night I might make 5-10 bucks off of the family and
friends :).

No, the the mechs are still there and the doors are unlocked, I just
open the door and flick the little micro switch a few times. I try to
keep a bunch of credits on the wheels for anyone who does not know how
to do this.

But, on the first machine I've owned many, many years ago, I got wise.
I had it set up and mom and pop's dinning room when I was living at
home. I would come home from work each day and my sister would have
all her friends over playing my machine. This kinda pissed me off so I
would lock the door and would get a few quarters for the upkeep of the
machine, I felt bad after a few days and just left the door unlocked.
Now I could give a shit, play them until the machines starts
smoking...gives me something to fix :).

I used to have this goofy idea that if you kept the machines locked up
and had somebody else in the house hide the keys from you except for
any needed fixes or to unstick a ball or something, the quarter
'experience' might work. You know, make it more of a reality of the
arcade situation rather than totally pretending with the quarters
alone or using free play software or plug settings/alligator clips.
It was a looong time ago.

I don't really like free play if it's one of my DMDs, don't enjoy that
'FREE PLAY' blinking in my face in attract, so I still do the coin
switch flicking deal.

If so, no. I would never charge friends and family to play my machines.

As for tolkens, I don't bother with all of that.

All my machines have their coin mechs and coin boxes, all get them as
part of the restore but I don't want to use them.

While it is cool to hear a coin drop, again, I don't charge my
friends/family.

America carries more plastic than coins/cash now, so I'd probably have
to supply the quarters for people to use at any rate.

Went to Chuck E Cheese the other night and bought a bunch of tokens for
my kids to use. We didn't go through all of them so I am storing them
in my pins until we get back to play again. Don't know when that might
be...

Pretty easy to change the coin mechs to take the the .984 tokens. All
you have to do is dremmel one coin block and file two others. Takes
about 15 minutes and works great. Takes quarters or tokens.

I love the sound of the coins landing in the box and figure that when my
kids' friends come to play the tokens aren't *quite* as likely to walk
off.

I only have 4 machines, mine are on coin play. Usually i open the door
and flick the switch, but when I have quarters I use them, and they stay
in the machines. I just like hearing them go through the mech, and some
games do things when the coins are dropped, Lights and sounds on Pinbot,
sounds on BoP.

You may not have meant it this way, but your posts read to me that
anyone who has their home games on coins, charges their friends and
even more crazy... their family! Someone might do this but it would
be comedy sketch material in my book... :o)

For parties the games that are on coin-up are switched to FP, and if
it's just one pal over I'll throw a quarter in for them. My "family"
consists of two dogs and two cats, and if they're playing when I'm not
home then they must be paying their way...I don't do audits. Either
that or they figured out how to jigger it... ;o)

The coin-up "thrill" is for my own pleasure only, and I expect most
others who've posted to this thread...I'm the only one dorky enough of
my friends to think it's cool to put a nickel in an old game... ;o)

I have 20~ish pins and some video and arcade games, and of the
ones set up at my house all are on coin play. I even bought a change
machine that accepts $5 and leave a few bills on it (when I can). Many
of my games make attract noises and some have effects when coined (FH,
HS, BG) that you'd not see on freeplay. When I raid the quarters
(&bills for that matter) for gas, etc.it makes it more exciting to get
that freeplay "THAWCK". or else it means to gray keys & coin up
again! :) My em's are also set up for Quarters, and are set to credit
one time per quarter instead of just starting a game or adding
multiple credits. I even had to add a coin door to my puck bowler to
make it creditup as it was missing the coin plate & brackets and I
couldn't fine anything even close to fix it with. so now it matches
the more 'modern' game doors anyway! ;)
When I have people over, if it's just a couple-few I'll just hand
them a $5 and tel them I've got 'more where that came from!' But if a
party or league meeting, then I'll switch everything over to free
play.

At some point I would like to set my games to run on tokens, but it's
not a high enough priority. One game has no mechs and the coin switch
is completely bypassed for fp, two have quarter mechs, and one has 10p
mechs.

At this point I just want my games to play well. For the EM pins, it
doesn't add much to the experience for me to put in coins. On the
videos, it does make a difference. Particularly in games where you add
credits to continue. It's just not the same if you can keep banging on
the credit button. I feel the urgency of the countdown adds to the
experience. Of course, I only own a few games. If there were 50 games
to empty, I may feel different.

Heck, I just picked up a change machine to stuff in the gameroom and
make it really feel like an arcade.

But no, I don't charge to play the games, I'm going to be putting a
button on it to dispense the tokens without putting money into the
change machine. Any money going into it is purely voluntary.
