I picked one up a used one at a good price. When I got it the keyboard
lit up but I did something and now it doesnt. It lights up when its
booting but goes off afterward. It has to be something simple but I'm
not seeing it.

do a search on google. I see lots of other people having issues when I
did a search, but I can't access the links from my work.

Not knowing the model makes this a hit-or-miss answer but... Was there a
BIOS setting or BIOS update for your unit? If you installed an update or
changed a BIOS setting relative to the operation of the keyboard that might
kill the backlight until you reconfigure the settings.

Is backlighting turned on? Most modern backlit laptops have a function key
that kills all status lights. On my Gateway that one resets on restart but
on other manufacturer's machines it may not. Look for a key with a little
light bulb symbol on it.

After that the next two fixes are tied for top of the list:

Fn+F3 and Fn+F4 at first glance.

Reinstall atkacpi driver (part of the ATK package). This is the AT
Keyboard adapter driver/installation package that allows the operating
system control over the keyboard lighting.

True, but he didn't give us a model # so I just did a general search..
He can fill in the model # to narrow the search down. :)

I've got the same laptop and I love the beast.

I think when I ran into the problem, I simply reinstalled the driver.
There's a nice section detailing all the Utility / Bloatware at:
