WHAT...
...THE...
...F*CK?
I decided to reserve judgement on the LOTR LE backglass until I saw it in
person; after seeing pictures of it I was very unsure. I was willing to
give the benefit of the doubt that maybe, just maybe, all the
photographers were terrible and the backglass would look WONDERFUL in
person.
I was wrong. Holy cow, that backglass is a crying shame. It looks
*awful*!
So if you're reading this, I'm assuming you don't own an LOTR LE. I'll
try and explain what's *SO* bad about that backglass.
It's the mirroring. Specifically, it's that the backglass is NOT
MIRRORED, full stop. I don't know what definition of the word mirror
Stern is using, but it's not the same definition the rest of the planet
is using to describe mirroring.
The best way I could describe the LOTR LE backglass is that someone
decided to outline random lines of random objects in the glass. I say
random objects because not everything is outlined (as if the 'outer
glow' filter was used in photoshop). Just *some* things. Like the top
of one guy's coat and *not* the bottom. The left side of another guy and
not the right. etc.
But what's really bad about the random outlining is the so-called
mirroring is anything but. Really what it looks like is BRASS PAINT PEN.
It looks like someone took a paint pen and went to town outlining random
things! (I actually went up to my friend's and did a fingernail test to
see if that garbage was on the *front* of the glass -- it looks THAT bad
and THAT amateurish.) And it's not even done all that well; the guy to
the left of Frodo has a complicated hair line, and the 'gold' outline
winds up going into orbit around his head, creating more of a detached
halo look than even a proper outline.
But more to the point, adding brass paint pen to a backglass does NOT
make it mirrored! A *mirrored* backglass, where it's mirrored REFLECTS
LIGHT. If you stand in front of a properly mirrored backglass and shift
back and forth, you'll see your reflection in the mirrored sections of
the glass, and whatever else is behind you in the room otherwise.
But on the LOTR LE backglass, in the so-called mirrored sections?
NOTHING. That's right, you see *NO REFLECTIONS*. You don't see
yourself, you don't see the row of games behind you, in a brightly lit
room you just see brass-ish colored ink.
What adds insult to injury is that not only does the brass ink not
reflect anything, it doesn't allow light to transmit through it, either.
So if you have an LOTR LE that is in a dark room, you wind up with a
backglass with these HORRENDOUSLY THICK DARK LINES around random pieces
of the backglass! It's so bad it's *comical*. It'd be a hoot if people
weren't paying a genuine premium for it.
I took some time in photoshop to simulate the effect. It's definitely
not perfect, and after a while I got bored using the paint bucket, but
it's kind of close to the effect of an LOTR LE backglass in a dark room:
http://www.thekorn.net/lotr/lotr_dark_mirror.jpg
So that looks pretty damn bad all told. But there are two other things
that make it even worse:
1) They apparently didn't change the density of the inks when printing
on the glass. The result is that if you have an LOTR LE next to a
translite game such as POTC, the LOTR LE bg looks *washed out*.
Saturation down 20%. So you have this washed out backglass with thick
dark outlines of half the characters. The net effect is that it looks
like a still from bad korean animation.
and 2...
2) Hair dick.
Not kidding.
"Mommy? Why is there a penis on lord of the rings?"
'Girl, you craOH MY GOD!!!'
I warn you, if you click on this link, you cannot UN-see what I'm about
to show you. It's Safe For Work (SFW), but your brain will be
permanently imprinted. *Every* time you look at an LOTR LE you'll see
hair dick.
Click at your own risk!
http://www.thekorn.net/lotr/lotr_hair_dick.jpg
That's right, a big hair dick, outlined in brass paint pen. Sacre bleu!
Encroyable!
And on the winds of the revelation of hair dick, I'm done.
That is too funny!
Hair dick ! Holly crap , that's funny . Good thing I cancelled my
order on that Gem .
I think the "Hair-dick" is the old man's Cain .
Also, just something to make you go hmm here, But I have a Firepower
BG here that all of the paint flaked off & it has what looks like the
brass lines out-lining everything, It's not on the glass, But looks to
be embedded in the middle of the glass, Because it won't come off .
Wish I owned a LE ! , Heck I wish I owned a LOT*Rs . !
Pin-Del,
cargpb28
I'm happy for those that got a NIB copy of what most people feel is a
great game (I've never played LotR personally) and while it might not
be realistic to expect better during Stern's current operating
environment, it certainly seems like some corners were cut for a
'Limited Edition' (since at this point I wouldn't say the LE is the
definitive edition). But then again the 'issues' are probably easily
fixed, and you can't take the NIB away from the owners. :)
But here is a question for you..other than maybe Spiderman
Black....are pinball LE's ever really that much different/better than
the originals? Only other one I'm aware of is Adams Family Gold and it
seems like the originals are more popular.

"Hair-dick" is quite inappropriate as there are young readers and
women on the forum.... to be politically correct, it would be "Hair -
Schwantz"...
Shouldn't that be, "Herr Schwanzstücker?"
Kind of like when the Disney artist added penis like figures on the
Little Mermaid VHS cover art ;)
Dude why are you such a Gomez hater ;)) Always comparing !
Either way, a harry dick on a backglass IS funny!!
Your worried about Hair Dick? Wait till you visualize this!!!!!
Dead center (top) How could you miss this!!! How???
Looks like legs of a woman straight up in the air.
Ass is on the guys head. Awh man, but wait thers more.
How about that Flaming Vagina to complete the picture!!!!!!
Man this glass is rated X
I gotta get one:)
So the pictures did reveal the true ugliness. As far as your
"dickspotting" goes, everyone has to have a hobby =)
> I dub thee, LOTR HD...
That's gold, Rob... GOLD!!
LOTR HD it is! :)
> Dude why are you such a Gomez hater ;)) Always comparing !
Nahhh, I still really enjoy LOTR, just not that ridiculous BG.
> Your worried about Hair Dick? Wait till you visualize this!!!!!

Didn't miss that... We made all those jokes the *first* time they made
LOTR. :)
Big vag in the backglass, back panel looks like a puckered anus that you
'shoot' through, rings of men, etc.etc.etc.
You are starting to worry me now V.
Skoot
I for one think they would have been able to sell just as many, and
for as much, by
just remaking the originals, sans the figurines of course.
Why didn't anyone warn me before I opened this
thread................................................
The one I have is the LOTR CHD
C=Canadian.
I am going to play NoGood Gofers - at least it is PG Rated.

Naw, it's the tower in the background.
As for LE's that are MUCH different.
I have one.
Eight Ball Deluxe LE!
Don't get much different looking than that! The unique "Hyperball"
cabinet with 3 tiers. The backglass is different & is of the same
size as DMD pin translites, but was unheard of back in '82.
Then having all the displays on that lower tier, right above the PF,
is VERY cool IMHO. I like the fact that you can see your score
without having to look way up to the top of the backbox like you do on
other pins. Easy to see during play.
The apron is different, the cab art is different.
Very cool LE, methinks.
Joe
Korn, you never cease to amase me :)
They are the last remaining maker of high quality pinball machines and
it is wrong for you to have an opinion that is not completely
complimentary and approving of everything they do.
You may have looked over and studied this backglass in detail, but
that makes you no expert and you are not entitled to judge.
However, if you buy 3 LOTR LE and own them for 9 years and then can
write us an 80 page summary of why you don't like the backglass we
might accept your opinion.
Sincerely,
STERN fanboys

Uh, I didn't scan it in; I took Stern's promo shot and added an arrow.
Much faster!
> Given what you paid for this pin, I sure hope you can get over this!
> As for the backglass, yeah that mofo is UGLY!
I didn't pay anything for it; it's my friend's.
Your opinion does not agree with mine, therefore I deem it invalid. :)))
5K for hair dick! LOL!

Being relatively new I never visualized the Eye of Sauron as a flaming
vagina before, and that is pretty cool, and now I want to try one. I
don't care if I lose my hair.
Thank you Korn, that's the hardest I've laughed in quite awhile.
Randy
I bet your friend is glad to hear you think his 5k pin looks like a
penis?
With friends like that who needs enemy's. lol
Mine is still on the way and I am disappointed to say the least
But it is still a NIB lotr
so I will live with it
ROTFLMAO!
Doesn't look like hair dick is too exited about the game.
Then again sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
Did you ever notice Krusty giving the finger on TSPP BG?

Eric
dude, i'm sure you paid more for one. ;)

My friend is smart enough to know that since he had no role in creating the
backglass, that it doesn't reflect upon him.
Jack looked at it; He likes it!
You mean Bally's Rapid Fire cabinet versus the Williams Hyperball.
Looked to me like a translite stuck to a piece of glass
...and a lot of time on their hands!
Davester.
IIRC, Jack said the backglass would have gold treatment but no mention
of mirroring.

No, no no no. You can't go and draw a limp dick on a backglass, OUTLINE IT
IN FAUX GOLD PAINT, then turn around and go "hurr hurr hurr, you got a
dirty mind for seeing that". Sorry, things don't work work like that.
About the only thing Stern *didn't* do was put up neon arrows point towards
it!
I didn't go *looking* for anything. An object highlighted by a poor paint
job is going to (pardon the pun) jump out at *anyone* who looks at it.

That's a fair question. Some quick google searching shows that Jack was
talking to Gary about a mirrored backglass, but I haven't dug up anything
that says definitively one way or another (from someone credible; lots of
secondhand parroting) whether it was supposed to be mirrored or not.

Have you seen the actual glass, or are you just going by pictures?

Yeah, you really gotta see it in person to really gauge it. Pictures don't
really convey the quasi 3-d ness of the brass outlining. (All the outlines
look like they're in front of all the rest of the ink.)
