New to the forum and the pinball collecting scene - just got my first
machine, SOF. Pretty happy with it except I can't get any of the speech
to work. Music works fine but no speech. I tried the sound test and #s
00, 04 & 06 don't have any sound. If I listen really close to 04 with
the volume all the way up I swear I can hear a faint sound like speech
but not sure.

Anyway, any help for a noob would be most appreciated.

try reseating the ribbon cables and reseat the sound roms. Just lift
them up slightly (not out of socket) and press them back down. Make
sure none of the sound rom legs are outside of the socket.

Tried reseating the ribbon cables but can't get the sound rooms to
budge. Doesn't look like any of the legs are outside the socket but
I'll pick up an ic puller from radio shack tomorrow and try and budge
them. Hopefully that will do the trick. Thanks

Make sure your voltages are correct. Speech is on sound board and
sound effects are on mpu, I think. They are separated for sure. Make
sure you have +5 volts and -5volts on sound board. Most likely the
source of your problem.

I don't think Radio Shack carries the IC puller that you need anymore
and I'm not sure it would work anyway as these chips can be locked in
pretty tight after so many years. Use a jewelers screwdriver and very
carefully pry up each corner of the ROMs. You'll hear some nasty
creaking and cracking noises as the legs break free from the sockets
but just go slowly and work each end out evenly. When you get them
out you'll see some nice brown dust on the sockets too. :-)

Got an IC puller and tried pulling sound ICs out and re-plugging with no
luck. I'll get a multimeter and check the voltage.

BTW, when I hit the sound test button on the CPU I only get one tone -
manual says I should get two and indicates an issue with U23. Does this
mean I need to replace the U23 IC?

thanks

I did not know there was sound and CPU test buttons. When I hit sound I got ONE cry/moan, and when I hit CPU I got one tone and MEM.PROT. FAILURE on the display. I knew I was missing a sound effect for the spinners on lower horshoe and the spinner on the left ball-lock. I don't know yet if it is because I have the old ROM1 chips instead of the updated ROM2. I should know in a couple of weeks, as I just ordered them today. As far as MEM.PROT. I am guessing one of my sound chips are dead. Where did you read or hear about the sound tests having two tones?

The two tones were detailed in the manual - I sold my SOF so I no longer
have the manual so sorry I can't give you the page #. I think the
mem.prot failur emessage for the CPU may be because the coin door is
open. Make sure it's shut and try again. Before I sold it I got the
updated sound and CPU roms - I could tell the play/rules had been
updated but didn't fix my speech problem. That said if you are only
having problems with some of the sounds new roms might fix the problem.

Btw SOF is a great game - I'm still sorry I sold mine!
