Guy wanted $3000 for it and settles on $1000 ?? For a $500 game when
its fixed up?? I guess location IS everything.
He told the Pawn Stars they could get $5000 for it. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
SHEESH !! Restored for $3000+ the $1000, and plan on selling it for
$5000.....ten times what its really worth. Vegas here I come !!

And they paid $3,000 to have it shopped out... which included a couple
of coils and new "flipper islands".
Rick Swanson
Who is that Yonkel that ripped off the pawn shop
dudes? Who calls flipper bats "flipper islands"?
Wonder why they didn't call tim arnold?
remember folks it's television. It's not real !!!
So...3000$ to restore a 500$ EM. I don't know much about EM
restoration, but something tells me after that restore that guy is
gonna be adding some more machines to his gameroom with his profit.
2010 Price guide lists as 500$ and there is one on Mr. Pinball for
that...can anybody in all seriousness make that deal add up to $5000
or for that matter 3000$ for the restore (think he clearcoated it?).
Chris
BAHAHAHAHAHA....freaking hysterical....Those kids should loose a
month's salary due to that goof. And did you get a load of the guys
home? He's got some serious mortgage payments to make so you can't
fault him for wanting 10X the actual labor/parts cost to restore it.
Afterall, he paid 10X the actual value of his home.
How he held a straight face saying 5000 dollars is a true sign of
poker face. FREAKING HYSTERICAL....
Oh, here's the real averages:

Not one time does that game go to 4 digits.
Sheesh that guy stepped in it . He really did. And he knew he did all
the way through. 3k! With a 5k resale!
Talk about setting the bar high. Now everyone with a beat down machine
will think its worth a lot more because pawn stars said so.
It did look good though - (the playfield) - perhaps it was cleared.
Maybe 1000 tops for the time (which is even too much).
Flipper islands! LOL!
A little polish, some parts and a whole lot of profit.
My truck is loaded and ready to head for Vegas tomorrow morning.

It didn't even look like the coil sleeves were replaced on the close-
up of the flipper assemblies!
I liked how he looked under the playfield and pointed to one of the
coil and said, "well there's a toggle switch missing here." Ain't no
toggle switch supposed to be anywhere near where he pointed, in fact I
think the on off switch under the cabinet is the only toggle on that
game...
I did look really nice when he was done though so at least he can
sleep at night :)
I was thinking we'd all have fun with this one once I saw the unholy
sum they paid for it on top of the restore price...
They paid more than double the value of it before the restore then
another 6 times the value to restore it!
Fun stuff! Or maybe all of our machines just got a 10X bonus boost!

Ssshhhh!!!! Hey guys, don't talk so loud, someone will hear you. Just
smile, nod, and say 'that's about right, but I can make you a better
deal on this newer game'....
I think I'll have a loop of that segment playing next time I sell a
game.
Jerry
Ok..
So how many CL ad's are going to be listed here tomorrow after others
see this show?? There will be 20 CL posts of the day tomorrow now! I
can already see the ads "this sells for 5000 restored!"
I've actually seen them referred to as flipper island plastics in the
past. I forget if it was in a manual or parts guide somewhere long
ago.
So, how long before someone sends an email to the show/pawn shop
telling them the whole truth? I bet they lose that "dial a friend"
number real quick. In fact, if you go and really take advantage of
someone like that, I would not be surprised they don't show that
interaction on a new reality show and call it "The rest of the story."
I'll be in Vegas one week from today. I'll have a rental car, so maybe
I'll swing by that pawn shop and see if this machine is still there.
I'd love to get Chumlee's autograph, he cracks me up.
Randy
I'm watching the re-run now since I missed the initial airing.
"The thing that concerns me is that it's all in pieces". Meaning, the
legs and backbox are off of it. I guess they've never dealt with pins
before.
Chumley: "I know a lot about pinball machines. The first pinball
machine was invented by Raymond Maloney...the first coin op pinball
machine was made by Bally". Umm, not quite. This definitely smells
of BS also, he looked like he was reading that off a teleprompter!
Actually, almost word for word from my online search:
Doing a fact check, here's what I found online, close, but not quite:
<<The first coin-operated "pinball machine" was invented in 1931 by
Automatic Industries and was called "Whiffle Board". But the gaming
industry really began in the mid 1930's with the production
of a game called "Ballyhoo". It was invented by one Raymond Maloney,
who later started the Bally
Manufacturing Company of Chicago, IL. >>
http://www.bmigaming.com/pinballhistory.htm
(the above info is found right below the Title... "Pinball - The Early
Years : 1930s - 1950s "
If Chumley knew THAT, how come they had no idea how to put it
together, and had to call in an "expert"?
The pin does look to be in great shape, I don't see ANY problems with
the playfield, the head has a few scuffs but nothing major and should
touch up easily.
So, they cut to the scene when the "expert" shows up, they have the
playfield propped up, and coin door open (backbox still isn't on, nor
are the legs).
OMG, the "expert": Well, you ARE missing some parts...a knocker...and
a toggle switch".
Corey: Well then, what would it take to restore it and get it running?
"Expert": "Ummm...I'd say about...$2,500 - $3,000"
Corey: OK, sounds good
BULLSHIT!!!! They wouldn't even PLUG IT IN to see if it lights or
starts a game before buying???
OK, THEN it gets better! They cut to 2 weeks later, the guys go to
the "expert"s house.
Corey: Wow, it looks amazing...what did you do?
(Umm, he set it up and plugged it IN! He even put the legs and backbox
on now)
The expert: I totally went over everything inside and out, took off
everything on the playfield and cleaned it, it has all new bumpers/
rubbers on it
Corey: So, how much I owe you?
Expert: "Well, I can cap it at say...$3,000"
LOL...I'll bet you can! That's a pretty cheap shop job! BULLSHIT!!!!
So, total investment on something they know nothing about...$4,000.
Good luck on selling that!
Jeff Scott
I KNEW my Ballys were worth something. :) Maybe they paid in
Monopoly money!
They can't hear you...or don't wanna.
Kill your television!!!! :o)
Sean
I was thinking the SAME thing!
I was like ummmm 250 for the game 3-4 hundy for the repairs sell it
for 1k.......
WTF! I'm getting a trailer and some CL pins and going to vegas! Road
trip anyone?

It looked good, but for that price no way. I still cannot believe they
bought it for a grand non working!
I was really hoping to see Tim Arnold walk in....
>
> He told the Pawn Stars they could get $5000 for it. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
In both the pinball segment and the helicopter segment they allowed
the "expert" to both tell them what it would be worth after it was
restored / assembled, and then proceeded to hire the "expert" to do
the restoration / assembly.
The helicopter expert got paid $100,000 for putting the helicopter
together, only because he told them they could get $160,000 once it
was done. Crap, he should told them they could get $260,000 for he
helicopter when it was done and then charged them $200,000 for putting
it together.
I was only half listening to the helicopter expert discussing the
value of the unassembled parts, but I could swear he said that some of
the parts in the pile were worth $20,000 each. Hello... Mr.
Helicopter Expert... why weren't YOU buying the whole pile for
$10,000. Remember, Pawn Guy was bird-dogged onto the helo by Expert
Guy. Bottom line.... It's all got to be fiction.

Everyone, It is spelled Moloney.

Survivor, Big Brother, Apprentice, Pawn Stars - these shows are not as
spontaneous as the producers try to make them appear. Much of it is
scripted beforehand. If this was a real transaction at a pawn shop
that was not being funded by the TV crew, there is no way a pawn shop
proprietor would buy an item of that value without doing a basic
internet search of relative price.
We as pinball guys all KNOW the value of this machine - what we should
be thinking about is not the truth or fiction of this Pawn Stars
episode, but the truth or fiction of other shows we take for granted
as telling us a "true" story...

Well said.
Rick Swanson
The problem is now everyone that has an old pinball machine in their
basement and wants to get rid of it that we used to be able to get for
200 bucks will now want 1,200 thinking we can then shop it out and ask
5,000 for it. No more bargain projects :(
Tom
> This more than offsets last week's "old pinballs are junk" message on
> American Pickers!
I'm wondering if the American Pickers guys watch Pawn Stars?
Or the old guy with the pins in his barn??
HAHAHAHAHAHAH!!
The same holds true for all the other objects shown and the people
that know about them in their circles say the same thing.
This is not real by any means its a TV show. The same goes for movies
if you know about a subject and see it portrayed on film you laugh and
say where did they come up with this?
another thing I thought about.
The restorer seemed to have a very nice small collection wouldnt you
think that he may be a member here?
As for the O and E that machine looked nice from the start it appeared
to be in really good condition only a bit dirty.
Notice even the siderails looked flawless?
Anyway we can pic it apart as much as we want I still go by what I
just wrote its TV.
Come on Look at the crime shows and Hospital shows all over the tube
just show me anywhere on Earth where these type of scenarios or
staffs.
Pilots cringe anytime something flying related is shown in movies or
TV its all make believe written in a fashion for the majority of
people that might know about a certain subject.
behave the way they do?
You mean to tell me there *isn't* a blow-up doll that inflates in the
captain's seat whenever they switch to autopilot, like in "Airplane!"?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/radio1movies/airplane_autopilot.jpg
Yeah you get the idea!
I meant might NOT know about the subject
Even "Law and Order" shows it's FICTIONAL statement at the end of each
episode...no, these shows are not legitimate in any sense of the
meaning. They purport to be REAL and seek out real businesses to show
their "day to day activities" more or less. Even the old game shows
would say "promotional items provided by" blah blah blah company.
No, these shows don't get a pass just because it's on TV. It's
disingenuous. Ask yourself this, if it was a "drama" would you really
tune in to see someone sell a game for 10X the value since its written
in the script. The answer is NO.
Oh, and let the fun begin:
Craiglist is already showing a listing: $2,500 for kings and
queens...nice.
They must have watched the show last night...
I think the restorer guy is the owner of that game. He took it apart &
put it in the pawn shop & they started shooting. The game looks fully
restored when it was apart & it looks like its part of the collection
at the restorers house.
Just like the $2000 kiss game that they never bought & ended up on CL.
Carrol
Thank god. I was always afraid that some day I'd be asked to inflate
it.
scott
Yep, no doubt this entire transaction was a fabrication.
Someone should call Gold & Silver Pawn and feign interest in the game,
and see what they say.
(I'd say you'd get more BS, i.e. "it's sold", though the true owner
would be nuts not to let it go for that much if some rich weenie were
really interested!)
