Thanks to Ken @ Pinball Rebel for hosting pictures, as usual!

http://www.pinballrebel.com/pinball/big_buck_hunter_pinball/index.html

Really, I don't know of a game where I had lower expectations going
in.
Maybe close was with Wheel of Fortune; I was pretty far down the
excitement
scale, to a degree of "minus thirty Pontiacs". (And unfortunately in
the
case of WooF, -30 Pontiacs turned out to be accurate prediction!)

When I heard that Stern was going to do a pinball based on Big Butt
Hunter, all I could come up with was "oh *NO*". It's been quite a
while since I had been actually
*dreading* playing a new Stern based on just the theme alone, but I
was in definite dread territory before playing BBH. I thought I knew
exactly what I'd be in for, twenty rounds of "git 'r done" mixed with
heaping doses of pisswater blue ribbon and rejected jeff foxworthy
material. Dread doesn't come close to describing my lack of
anticipation for big butt hunter, but it's the closest idea.

Needless to say, when BBH showed up at gw I didn't exactly hurry
myself over there to play it. To be honest I never even went to play
NBA at
gw because I simply didn't *want* to play space jam any more than I
really have to. ("33 more shots to multiball! 32 more shots to
multiball! 31
more shots to multiball!") It's not that space jam is all that *bad*
of a
machine, but it's not nearly a *good* enough machine to be worthy of
recycling the playfield layout wholesale. But since BBH is a
completely new
playfield design, I resigned myself to trekking on over to gw to give
it a
fair shake, even if I was dead sure before going out that I was
absolutely
going to hate it because of the theme.

Have I mentioned that I actively detest redneck culture? No? OK, for
the record I actively *detest* redneck culture. For example, I dislike
NASCAR (the brand) because of its strong association with redneck
culture. And anyone that says 'git 'r' done' stands a good chance of
having me simultaneously put my foot in their ass and my fist through
their face.

So I'm EXTREMELY happy to report that Stern hasn't fallen into the
death trap of redneck-ing up Big Buck Hunter. In a nutshell, big buck
hunter is loosely about hunting; they have wisely relegated the reject
jeff foxworthy material to the cutting room floor.

It's still earrrrly in the software cycle, so it's hard to do a lot of
judging at this point. (Plus I haven't really spent a ton of time on
it yet.) But I will say that I was having fun playing BBH. None of
the objectives so far in the game are hard to accomplish in and of
themselves, but as is often the case with pinball doing the right
things at the right time is what's going to make or break you. (Stack
or die!)

Keeping in mind it's early software, I can see this game making
buckets of money on location. I'm not quite sure I'm sold on it for a
home collection, but the main objective (hit the stupid deer in the
middle of the playfield) is a pretty compelling feature, and is going
to be immediately recognizable as to what to do. See deer, hit deer
with ball. Duuuh. You don't need the instruction card to figure that
out, and considering the obviously intended target audience and
subject material it's a really GOOD fit between the theme of the game
and the mechanics of playing the game. It's not as compelling as
POTC's sinking ship, but I don't know that we'll be seeing a toy that
complex anytime soon.

Ball times so far are pretty low. It was just ravaging my friend who
was there playing along with me game after game. Even the ball saver
could be legitimately described as 'miserly'; if you legitimately
plunge and drain you're going to get it back, but one trip around the
ramp and drain and you're done. This is no IJ4.

So buck up campers, BBH is not the flaming pile of dog poo that you're
expecting. It's still too early to say if it's a great game or not,
but it's at least a solid game at this point.

My first thoughts on this title were WFT were they thinking. I have
to say that the game looks like it would be a lot of fun with some
pretty cool challenges, not just a lot of gimics.

Credit card swipe instead of coin slots in the door. Interesting. I
would have thought both. Does the rotating deer on the right side lead
the ball back to the shooter lane when open? That would be cool if so.

You know I gotta say it looks like they really did go all out with the
artwork, and as korn said the Redneck factor that I was also expecting
doesn't seem evident. Not the cartoony goofy look I was expecting
either. I think this might just be a sleeper that will end up a
winner! I think one of the reasons they stayed away from the Redneck
humour, was because they didn't want this to be about making fun of
hunters, and saying they're all dumb rednecks, because this game may
do well in hunting lodges, and they don't want to piss the main target
customer off, by making fun of them. That would have been shooting
themselves in the foot no pun intended!

Kim, When you go to Gameworks you buy a preloaded game card. Like a
credit card but they load it right there 10,20 25 bucks whatever you
want to put on it when you walk in. Then you go around the arcade and
put the card in the games to start games, and it takes money off that
card as you play. No credit card in the machines I don't believe. When
the card is used up you can toss it or load more money on it if you
want...

I can't say I'm excited by the theme but I'll give it a try. I'm
just amazed that the whole playfield is practically cut in half for
the deer runway. That looks like it will need three or four "Drac
Trac" style brackets to keep it from warping.
Anyway, do you think Stern might do a limited edition RGP run? I
want mine with a custom Lloyd figurine to repalce the deer. That would
be fun!

Playfield seems pretty low budget (is the apron plastic?) Did it seem
that way in person?

Theme is a pretty lousy one in my opinion but I suppose the deer's
agents didn't have to get paid so the licensing costs must be cheap
for Gary.

Hoping it puts some cash in the til but I have a bad feeling about
it. I wasn't a big fan of CSI (though I like the show quite a bit).
This seems very similar in design; (one big attraction, the usual
suspects but missing a few key ingredients to make the playfield a
good player).

But I suppose it's too early to judge based on still pictures alone.
When will a video be posted? (software isn't that important, I just
want to see the ball bounce around, etc).

Yes, it does during a 2-ball Elk multiball.

I had pretty much the same expectations as Korn on BBH and I gotta say
it is a pretty fun shooter. I'm guessing Lyman programmed this one
and not Lonnie cuz the rules were actually entertaining, especially
for Big Buck multiball.

I'm not sure why, but I really dig the spinner shot behind the Buck's
home position. You can only hit it when the Buck comes out and it's
got a great spinner sound too.

Yes it does. It's effectively a diverter for the left orbit shot back into
the shooter lane...

...which also sets up a perpetual motion machine if you hit the shot and
the ball doesn't quite settle in the shooter lane, and then you hit the
shot AGAIN so that the ball being shot by the autoplunger meets the ball
traveling around the orbit. Both stop nearly dead, and fall into the
autoplunger at slightly different times. Then the first one gets re-
plunged, whangs into the second one, which goes just far up enough that
it...

...hits the diverter and falls back into the plunger lane, to be whanged
again by the original ball being re-re-plunged. :)

I don't honestly remember. It didn't jump out at me, so I'd hazard a
guess no.

> But I suppose it's too early to judge based on still pictures alone.
> When will a video be posted? (software isn't that important, I just

Won't be done by me. While we were there a couple of the Gameworks
employees were... curious. (Probably a combination serious camera setups
just not tending to show up there very often plus they had just opened so
we were pretty much the only non-employees in the place.) So we chatted,
and they were proud that they have a test machine. Along the way I let
it slip that it was a pain trying to get angles that weren't all glare-
icious from the overhead can lights.

That kind of sparked one of the guys, and he volunteered to take the
glass off to make shooting easier. The second guy was more reserved, and
said he should call Stern to get an OK. So the first guy disappears
while the second guy goes on and on about BBH. (This is really where the
'proud to have it' conversation happened.)

About five minutes go by, and the first guy reappears, visibly
crestfallen, to let us know that Stern put the kabosh on taking off the
glass for pictures. (That was somewhat amusing in and of itself; he was
falling over himself to apologise and I was nearly as bad telling him
that it was OK and that I could somewhat work around it. :) )

So no, I won't be doing any video. It's amazing to me that even in this
time of their deepest despair, Stern apparently feels that they don't
want any help publicizing their products. So be it; I got what I was
after for my own reasons. If Stern can't even be bothered to allow
*somebody else's employees* to remove the glass then I'm perfectly happy
to stop right there and put in no additional effort whatsoever helping
Stern.

Yes, another brilliant marketing decision from Stern. Here's a guy
spending his own time and money releasing "sneak peak" videos of new
Stern pinballs... generating tons of buzz and surely leading to lots of
pre-orders. And Stern doesn't see the value. Amazing.

Thursday nights (tonight) they do from 8pm - 12 midnight all the games
you can play for 10 bucks. Not a bad deal. If you just play pinball
tho and are good enough you can probably play longer with a money card

To each his own I guess. I hope the game is successful for the sake of
pinball, but I HATE the use of random textures as art. I'd much
rather they pay an artist to draw... say deer blind camo than slap
photorealistic clip art of the same thing on the pin. An artists
interpretation of the subject matter just seems more whimsical to
me...trying to be photorealistic just reminds me that I'm looking at a
bad mock up of something that actually exists in real life.

And since they paid for the license I assume they want to attract
players of the video game, and I think that would be better served by
mimicing the graphic style used in the video game. Right now it seems
like you get name recognition only (which may be enough) with very
little tie in otherwise.

Mmmm, and given the enthusiasts of RGP are of little importance to

Not at all Kim, I wouldn't know either but I just happened to go there
once a few years ago. The ingenious thing about the cards is that they
end up taking a lot of money for nothing. When people are done playing
they tend to leave some money on the cards thinking they'll use it up
next time the go, but then they either never end up going back, or
they lose the card and there goes the money that was left on the card,
right to the arcade for games never played! If you added all that up I
bet they make a ton of money for absolutley nothing! Ingenious!

Tokens worked the same way, so this isn't exactly new. The concept is the
same: get people to pay up front. Worked well, too, until discounting and
special days came along. Buy $20 of tokens on Thursday and you'll get $5
in tokens free is brilliant, it drives up sales on Thursday, until you
realize that the people _buying_ tokens on Thursday are using them on
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

I appreciate the empathy guys but you read too much. If my computer

Thanks =)

Hey Kim,

(add sarcasm font) So how do you look in a veil? I'd like to see a

The one and only time I played a hunting gun game in an arcade, it was
Game Over almost immediately because I shot every deer I saw.

I didn't know you were only supposed to shoot the males.

Hey, I grew up in the suburbs. How was I to know?

If you want to marry Kim, you're going to have to get down on one knee
and ask him. Kim's old-fashioned like that.

Um, well, those are high res pictures... not particularly good ones,
but they are high res. I always wondered what light reflections and
things out of focus would look like at 150dpi. Thanks.

In the future, put your camera on macro mode and have someone block
the reflections or use flash properly and they'll come out a lot
better.

Kim,

Your sarcasm font is a fantastic idea. Imagine how many
misunderstandings it could prevent.

Mike who doesn't like emoticons and needs sarcasm font.

Well I DID ask gameworks if I could shoot out their ceiling lights, but
they just weren't receptive to the idea!

But if you'd like to lead by example, please and by all means, feel free to
do so.

Well Korn:

That's what you get for trucking down to gameworks, and trying to
provide fellow RGPers with a glimse of a new game, and going out of
your way to post the pics. An ingrate complaining about pic quality,
when you explained already about the lights, and not being able to
take the glass off. Too bad Pincorrect wasn't there to give you a
photography lesson, and give you a few pointers on how it's done.

Thanks a lot anyway! I and the rest of us do really appreciate the
pics...
