Here's the deal. The switches run off of 5 volts DC... if you're
shorting 5volts to it anywhere, it wont' hurt anything. Screwy signals
won't hurt anything.
Since you're getting fried chips, you have, whether you can find it or
not, AC voltage or high DC voltage entering the switch system somewhere.
You have to, there's no other way it would be doing that.
So somewhere you've got 25 volts or whatever for the coils, or the 12
volts for the cpu, or the 6 volts for the lights entering your switch
matrix. It's probably doing it intermittantly which is why you can't
find it easily.
If you put a pascal board in... you're probably going to fry it too by
doing the same thing!
I had a Close Encounters System 1 that was doing the same thing. I had
solenoid voltage shorting to the switches, but it was only doing it on
the rototarget, and only sometimes, and only through the ground, and
blah blah blah. Took me months! to figure out where it was. I put a
new pcb in it, and fried the switch section on it too.
One thing you can do is, put it in attract mode, and LEAVE it in attract
mode. Don't try to start it... and see if it'll stay in attract mode for
a couple hours. Maybe that will help narrow it down... I would also
unwrap that batch of wires on the coin door and go over each wire with a
fine tooth comb and a strong light, look for a nick anywhere.
Also pull the wires up that go through the head, look very closely and
see if anything's kinked anywhere. The switches and the solenoids come
up through seperate looms, so they shouldn't be touching but you've got
to look close, whatever you're looking for is very minor and will be
very hard to find.
I hope you put sockets in on those chips... my advice would be to keep
THAT board in there until you can play a game on it, it's much better to
keep screwing THAT board up than to screw up the pascal.
