FS Centaur in excellent condition, working. Needs 2 drop targets replaced. Cabinet, playfield, backglass all in excellent condition; very clean inside and out; looks like it was never on a route. I will work on taking some pics but in the mean time come see it if interested. Located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Asking 3,500

Is it just me..or should a $3500 centaur be in perfect working order and not require immediate repair. I'm the last one to bitch about high prices, I like it when my games increase in value... but if you're selling it as a high end game, why not do the drop target replacement?

Valid point. I just haven't managed to order some from Pinball
Resource, and I didn't want to put generic replacements in there.

For $3500 you'd think they would have sprung for more playfield colors. ;)

Seriously though, $3500 for a Centaur? They made almost 4000 of them, it's not particularly rare. But hey, he's free to ask whatever and if you really want one, here it is. I don't want the price police police to get on me for noticing so pretend I didn't.

How much higher would you rate Centaur over Space Invaders? I have an
opportunity to pick up a really nice one of those fairly cheap.

Centaur and Space Invaders are not even in the same league.

Space Invaders is a cool looking game, but its a wide body Silverball
Mania and suffers many of the issues SBM does.

Centaur has the voice, the looks, the interesting multiball rules, etc.
Still not the best Bally of the era but MUCH better than SI.

I've seen SIs around here (NY metro for 1000-1500), and slow to sell.

I know I'm way in the minority here, but Centaur is a multiball
flail-fest. Cool sound effects, but the gameplay grows thin.

Of course, I don't care for Fathom, either. Great artwork but I really
dislike games with the reversed outlanes, they're just 'wrong'.

SI w/o wear is worth $750. They're slow to sell at $1000-$1500 because
they're not worth that much. I wouldn't go much over $750 for one, I've
passed on several around the $500 mark that had the usual wear.

First thing I'd do is disable that stupid BOOM-BOOM-BOOM the flippers
make every time you press them, followed closely by the annoying siren
on the single drop.

Now a lot of people are going to say EBD, but they are wrong. If you want drops then Fathom is better. Best player too.

For me, the best early 80s Bally is EBD. I love the theme, drops, and
ruleset. The pin is a fantastic one ball game.

I'd probably put Centaur next because of artwork, sound, and playfield
design and features. The multiball effect is interesting but actually
playing multiball is boring.

Fathom is third by a little with awesome art, playfield but it doesn't
click with me. The sound is awful. The multiball is better than
Centaur because of the 2x/3x playfield aspect.

I don't have much time with Skateball or FG.

Digressing, I think several classic Sterns are better than most
Bally's and include Nineball, Stargazer among them.

I have a CQ Xenon and CQ Medusa. About as good as these games can possibly get. I'm glad to see the Centaur go. I thought the price was fair... just thought for that price the little bit of work should have been done. Not a big deal though. If I had more space I would have considered. I don't mind spending a little more to own a really nice piece. I actually find the prices of these games really low when you compare to other pieces of furniture and art which you dont get nearly the level of enjoyment out of. The only thing keeping prices so low (yes they are low) is thats what the current people in this hobby can afford. I think if pinball ever gets more mainstream we can see prices double.

You can still find BBB for 15k. Makes no sense to me. Not when many other titles are getting over 12k and have far more than 200 games produced. Also many collectible titles in CQ condition are going for less than new Stern games which have not yet become collectible.

Sad to see Centaur go. I really want one... as well as Fathom and of course Flash Gordon. Actually I think I want them all. I have a serious problem. Just not any more space..for now.

it IS, but the noobs have blown the doors off pin prices over the last
year and a bit. Now nobody has any idea. People actually think these
pins are supposed to go for these prices now...I laugh. And I'm gonna
laugh all the way to the bank when I decide to get in on it and sell
my pins for overinflated prices to noobs. Why the hell not?

Anybody want an above average High Speed? Price is 3.5 grand.

I own one in the favorable pile: Centaur. Should bring between $2K-3K
depending on location and how much of a Jones someone in the area has
for the game. If we use the Allentown game as an example I don't think
that is unreasonable since there were many people who saw the game up
close. I know my game is much nicer than that one.

Fathom and EBD are games I would love to own but for the reason above
are way more than I am willing to pay. I missed the opportunity to
purchase when I got into the hobby at much lower prices but that
includes many titles. 10+ years.

Skateball, Medusa and Xenon were also mentioned. I own all 3. All
great titles but fall into the 1A pile. I still don't understand why
Skateball doesn't get move love. Fun game and rarely mentioned by the
group. If it had a sci-fi theme it probably would. My $.02.

Had an opportunity to buy a "nice" Centaur for $1000 in the fall of '09.
CPR released the repro PF (which I brought), then reached out to that
very seller and he went silent. Everybody went silent, and those that
didn't jacked their prices right up. About the same time HEP released
the ever so drool-worthy HEP Centaur gallery pics. Absolutely gorgeous
work of art, whether you like the gameplay or not.

Again, supply dried up. If you old farts with tons of inside connections
are turning them down left or right - good. for. you. The rest of the
world apparently doesn't carry your social distinction.

If I see a nice Centaur, and it's billed as "Cabinet, playfield,
backglass all in excellent condition; very clean inside and out; looks
like it was never on a route", and I've been wanting one since '09 ...
I'm going to take interest.

Will I buy? Maybe. If it's what the seller says it is why not? I could
dump 8-10 grand in a (questionable quality) Stern, or get a piece of my
childhood history with a nice classic.

So am I a noob driving prices up? Maybe. In your eyes. Been in this
crazy hobby since 2008. Still feel like a noob, so why not. Or maybe
I've just earned enough, and want it bad enough to buy it (along with
countless others on my list). And for that price, for that quality, from
the right seller might be just fine - for anybody; noob or not. No
apologies.

Demand is demand. Like it or not.

They're not over priced if they're selling. Its a fair market. Lets see.. when I was 10 this game came out... now I finally have enough disposable income and space to own a few games. This is probably the peak though. Once we die off they will not be in as much demand anymore... but we still have a good 20 years. Tough time for the people who want to be in the hobby on the cheap.

Indeed - It is tough for everybody, except those looking to get out.

From this same perspective I respect the old-timers getting all bent on
skyrocketing prices. They recall coffee for a nickle, gas for a quarter,
and pins for cheap likewise. Times change, the hobby grows, demand
grows, and prices go up. It's just the way it is. While it's wildly
entertaining to watch some go on a price freeze crusade, it's really not
worth getting all bent out of shape.

Prices for this title in particular haven't changed much though. I
bought a very nice example of Centaur in 2000 for $1500.00

Take into consideration inflation, the complete devaluation of the
dollar etc, 12 years later and its a wash.

People your money is worth LESS, and it is reflected in ALL goods you

that is true about Skateball. It is a fun game and probably not

Blasphemy!!!!! You have to relight the collect by getting the 3
arrows up top, which can take several shots . . plus they're drainy.
Once you've qualified and cashed in a collect, you have to do it all
over again. I will give you the 100k at the right saucer is a bit
rapeable, but the fix there is to simply cap it at 50k in the
settings. I will also give you that layout is similar (ripped off) to
Flash . . . but much more interesting.

For me the big 3 single ball games are Frontier, Skateball and Flash
Gordon. Fathom for MB.

Hmm... Clinton's fault for giving away free houses and moving manufacturing offshore? Reagan's fault for all his gov't spending? FDR's fault for starting this whole "New Deal" in the first place? Oh wait.. you must mean GWB's fault because you hate him personally so much. Both parties fuck with the free market, and whenever that happens you get sub-optimal results and less freedom in the long run. Hey the free houses thing made people rich and the economy soared... but down the road not so much.

Yes, I go for the 100k at the saucer rather than the bonus collect. Depending on the game's kickout, that shot can be quite repeatable.

I'm pretty sure there is a way to set it (EB's to conservative and
have it awards points?), so that the right saucer stays at 50k +
whatever you've built in bonus. I made the mistake of not setting
mine up that way a the last Rose City Showdown and realized within a
few seconds that hitting 100's was the easiest way to go. Setting it
to max at 50k opens up the rest of the game . . . and hitting a max
collect (79k x 5) is really satisfying.

Frontier and FG are terrific games, I wish I had them in my
collection.

As for the 3 arrows that is one feature I like about the game. It
might not be an A game in some eyes but close.

Ok I took a few pics of it, inside and out. You be the judge. It looks
really clean to me (And I have not cleaned the interior, this is how
it was when I bought it).

Just wanted to say a public thanks to Clutch. I just received my Centaur
today and it's absolutely stunning. If it's not HUO I don't know what
is. I was afraid to touch it, much less play it.

New drop targets are in place and a replaced the ONE burnt bulb (ONE!
:-D). Aside from a chatty pop bumper it plays beautifully.

This was my grail pin and I finally found one. Thanks!
