Had an opportunity to buy a "nice" Centaur for $1000 in the fall of '09.
CPR released the repro PF (which I brought), then reached out to that
very seller and he went silent. Everybody went silent, and those that
didn't jacked their prices right up. About the same time HEP released
the ever so drool-worthy HEP Centaur gallery pics. Absolutely gorgeous
work of art, whether you like the gameplay or not.
Again, supply dried up. If you old farts with tons of inside connections
are turning them down left or right - good. for. you. The rest of the
world apparently doesn't carry your social distinction.
If I see a nice Centaur, and it's billed as "Cabinet, playfield,
backglass all in excellent condition; very clean inside and out; looks
like it was never on a route", and I've been wanting one since '09 ...
I'm going to take interest.
Will I buy? Maybe. If it's what the seller says it is why not? I could
dump 8-10 grand in a (questionable quality) Stern, or get a piece of my
childhood history with a nice classic.
So am I a noob driving prices up? Maybe. In your eyes. Been in this
crazy hobby since 2008. Still feel like a noob, so why not. Or maybe
I've just earned enough, and want it bad enough to buy it (along with
countless others on my list). And for that price, for that quality, from
the right seller might be just fine - for anybody; noob or not. No
apologies.
Demand is demand. Like it or not.
