Who would be interested in a 20+ month no interest financing option for new Stern Pinball Machines?

I'm trying to convince Nebraska Furniture Mart to sell Stern Pinball
machines. They're listening. Please help me show them the potential
interest level in buying from them if they would carry Stern Pinball
Machines and offer their usual 20+ month no interest financing and low
prices.

Either comment here and I'll share it with them or better yet if you
have the time send their Electronics Sales Department an email:
http://www.nfm.com/AppEleSalesSupport.aspx

I'm not aware of any other dealer that currently offers no interest
financing options (especially for this long). This would be a great
position for them. People in the Mid-West are probably familiar with
the company, for everyone else check out www.nfm.com if you want more
info. They almost always have an 18-36 month no interest option
running.

If this were available I would buy a new Stern, otherwise I will
likely continue to buy only 2nd hand. I think there are likely many
others in this situation. Please chime in and I'll share this thread
with them.

If they offered no-interest financing, we'd all be fools not to buy

I have to think this would never fly. The mark up on the other items
they sell on time is probably so great they can afford to charge no
interest. Unless they marked up the price, I doubt they could sell
pinball machines that way too.

Check out their prices before you say that. They can't be beat around
here. They undercut Best Buy on pretty much everything.

I am not trying to rain on anybody's parade here, but borrowing money
is never free. Somewhere, somehow it has to be accounted for,
somebody has to pay for it. So that tells me that if they have a
great price with interest free financing, then an even better price
should be available if you are willing to pay cash. Either way it
sounds positive for the hobby.

You make a good point... the mark-up on furniture is typically 100%
(which explains why it's always on sale).

But, to answer the original question, yes, I'd drive to Des Moines to
pick up a pin if the bottom line made sense.

Good luck

Their financing is totally interest free as long as it is paid for
within the specified time. If not you will pay the interest. I've
bought dozens of items this way and never paid a cent of interest.

They need to make money somehow for them to make it worthwhile. 20
months to have money tied up is a long time. I would say the game
price will be padded to make up the interest difference Unless they
can match the $4200 or whatever Costco/Sears price how is it worth it
to them ?!?!?

Who cares what the business plan is for them? If you get a good price
and no interest for 18 or 36 months, that's a good deal. Shelling out
over $4k for a pinball all at once is painful. I would be happy to
buy a pinball this way, even for a little more money over paying all
at once.

Yes, You can borrow money for free in today's economy. It is when you
miss a payment. BAM!!!!!....What they expect is you or others missing
payment and that makes up for them giving away money. In most cases
0% financing is exactly that. They make up money when payments are
missed.

That is why if you have good credit you often do not "qualify" for
these plans. They don't want it paid off in the specified time
period.

Bill is right. If a monthly payment is missed there is a late fee.
Even more importantly is that it be paid off by the specified date.
If it is not then the interest will be applied. That's where they
make their money.

As far as people with good credit not qualifying... I've never heard
of anything like that.

I have excellent credit, and they just keep upping the amount that
they'd let me take out. I never run that much debt up though.
Usually just one maybe two items at a time. Their bills are very
straightforward on what needs to be paid and when so as to avoid late
fees and interest. And the payments are always applied in the proper
order if there are multiple items. Like I said before I've never paid
a cent extra with them.

Well, I have no idea about how this company works it, but similar
offers from furniture cos around my neck of the woods, goes like this.
0% down & 0% interest, but you must make a monthly payment of 1/24
(2yr. plan) each month. Here's the trap. Be late on ONE payment,
(note, not MISS, just late) & all interest will be accrue from the
beginning of the loan, AT 28% to 36% compounded ! Even if you made 23
payments on time and was late the last one, you would owe:

$4200 borrowed x 30% @ 2 yrs = $3568.00 INTEREST

Now, do you know why they offer such GOOD DEALS to us consumers ?

I have to agree with John. Pinball machines for me fall into the category
of "luxury item" or "toys". In other words, it is not a must have in order
to survive. That said, I could not see going into debt to get a pin.
Whether or not you are paying any interest, if you borrow money, you are
going into debt. And, going into debt to buy a pin for an individual is
probably not a good idea. Mathematically, if you have the money to buy a
pin, I suppose you would be better off putting that money into the bank and
let it earn interest while you made payments at 0 percent interest.
Although right now you would be lucky to get 2 percent interest on a 2 year
or less CD. The being in debt thing would not work for me personally.
Great for Ops though. They could buy a pin, the day the coin drop does not
equal the payment, they could sell the pin on the secondary market and
likely cover the remaining loan balance. That would be a good use of other
peoples money.

I wouldn't mind offering this type of financing to my customers, if your
able to actually set this up I would be very interested also.
thanx

I wish there were financing options up here in Canada for new Sterns..
there's no way in hell my wife would let me drop $5k on a new pin in
one shot.

Spending my monthly allowance on one on the other hand... that's no
problem at all! ;)

... and yes, I have an allowance. :(

I think it's a great idea. I've purchased furniture and other stuff
with no-interest financing over the years. As long you're responsible
and make the required payments early and/or pay it off early to avoid
the risk of all that accrued finance charges being tacked on then it
is a good deal. It can work out nicely for the buyer - but don't screw
up! What would the accrued interest rate be that someone would face
if they missed the payment? Something outrageous like 30% or
something more reasonable like 15%?

Living on the West coast, I've never done business with these guys so
I don't know what is typical. I suppose shipping costs would also be
factor to consider but I'd be interested getting more information and
possibly buying a new game this way. Count me in.

If you want to see the fine print on their financing it is on the
bottom of the 2nd page of their ads (which are on the website). The
interest rate you would pay if you don't have it fully paid for by the
specified date is 18%.

Would NFM get them direct from Stern and become a distributor, or
would NFM have to get them from a distributor (how much of a mark up)?

The financing sounds great, but the bottom line will be, how much will
the game cost?

If I can get a game shipped for $4100 paid in full, I'd rather do that
than pay $5100 no interest credit.

Any game currently in production by Stern will be available
(Shrek,BBHP, IM)?

I have furnished nearly my whole house with NFM, I would LOVE it if
they added pins. It would be a great fit with the rest of their
mancave stuff...they might actually do well with them.
