I got lucky with my Spy Hunter for $75. A place that furnishes new
model homes was selling two at $75 each advertised in the paper. I
don't recall what the other one was since someone else got it, but it
was from the same era. BG is perfect, PF I'd give it a 7-8. No major
wear, but some paint cracking/lifting in the upper playfield which I
cleared and it's good to go now. I think I had to replace a fuse and
put new connectors for the mpu etc. to get her working.

20 years ago, an estate sale ad just said "pinball machine" so I made
sure I was first in line.

Got in the door, and there it was, a clean Gorgar for $200. I
immediately said Sold! and they said but did you know one flipper is
broken? I said no problem, got it home, soldered the wire hanging off
the flipper coil back on, and voila!

My best garage sale find was a Blackout. The guy wanted $100 for it and I
offered and he accepted $80. While this sounds like a great deal, the
machine had been sitting outside under a tarp for over a year and I had to
completely replace the cabinet. I was fortunate to find one in the area.
The board set was fully operational, except for dead batteries and bad
holder. Playfield was just ok.

Like 4 yrs ago saw a ad in the local paper said pinball machine ,
called and the guy said it was star something said it had the
enterprise on it and Han solo and luke skywalker and that he wanted
$500 for it , this was monday after the said yard sale , not sure if
he did not put it out or did not have the sale but i drove there,
thinking the whoel time that maybe it was a star wars either data east
or sega or maybe a star trek eitehr data east or bally, when i got
there low and behold it was a star trek the next generation, well that
game has been gone for years now and ened up costing me as it later
need a new main board and to be shopped but still it was a good find
back when they were selling at 2400$

I have never scored a pinball machine from a garage sale. The first
year I started collecting my sister in-law told me about one
advertised at a sale in my small town. I was so excited we went the
night before to check it out. The people were very nice and let me
look the game over. It was a non-working 1975 Triple Strike in decent
shape with a flaky backglass. They wanted $300 for it but would not
sell it early as it was advertised and a couple other guys had called
already. At this point early in my collecting career it seemed like
the greatest thing ever but $300 was like a fortune to me at the time.
I showed up the next morning an hour late hoping no one else had
bitten and I could talk them down to $250. It was already gone and I
was really bummed. Looking back I realize if I would have bought it I
would have probably played it for awhile and put back into circulation
like so many others games I've had. It was neat to see a game for sale
so close by though and I've still never played a Triple Strike.

I have had better luck with ads in the paper, word of mouth, or
Craigslist. Although now all those resources seem to get leaner and
leaner with the great deals.

Not a garage sale, but I got a call last month from a guy selling a
pinball cheap. When I asked the guy what pin, it was a HUO LOTR for
$1500. No wear including no flipper area wear at all. Score and a
beaut!

I got my first 3 EM games at a garage sale my Dad saw in the paper, an
Air Aces, Recel Lady Luck, and a Full House for $700. Not a steal but
I ended up trading the LL for a SOF which I sold for $1200 so it
turned out to be a great deal in the long run!!

I still look in every open garage as I drive by, hoping to spot that
elusive score!!

Five years ago I picked up a 1976 Gtb Surf Champ, a 1962 Midway Skee
Fun skeeball, and a 1967 Wms Spotlite puck bowler from a single garage
sale for $100 each.

A couple of months ago I saw a "1933 pinball" listed at an estate
auction. Invariably that would mean a children's Northwestern 5-in-1
bagatelle as they carried a 1933 patent date for decades. I emailed
the auctioneer for pics nonetheless. It turned out to be a 1933
Rockola World's Fair Jig-Saw which I won at the auction for $160. Jig-
Saw is one of the most desirable pin games of the 1930's and one of
the most unusual. You attempt to complete a jig-saw picture of an
aerial view of the 1933 Chicago's World's Fair by landing balls in the
appropriate holes. http://www.ipdb.org/showpic.pl?id=1295&picno=1226

My best find was a 67 Magic City and a 67 Beat Time in great condition
both bought by Hub Music in No Dak in Dec. 67 both games had original
paperwork and receipts.
If I could get them out of there that day I could have them. I was
back with my trailer loaded up and gone in an hour.

I picked up an eight ball and a flash one time for free when someone
put them outside next to the trash. Both in great shape. Sold them
awhile back.

About 6 years ago my wife saw an ad in the paper for a local garage sale
to be held that Friday and Saturday which included a pinball machine. I
couldn't make it there on Friday since I had to work, but stopped by on
Satuday morning on my way to a Yankee's game with my son.
Anyway when I got there, I saw a Gottlieb Neptune in beautiful condition
in the corner of the garage, but before I could reach it the homeowner told
me that it had already been sold along with a jukebox for $400 and that the
buyer was going to pick it up later that day. I gave the guy my number
anyway and asked him to call me if the buyer didn't show up. I didn't hear
from him so I called him a few days later. Unfortunately, the buyer did
show up an take it away. AAARRRGH !

Had a friend call me up to tell me he saw one at a Garage sale and it
turned out to be a Nine-ball for $160. He turned it down so I scooped
it up.

Also found an ad in the paper for one at a Garage Sale and it turned
out to be a HUO immaculate Gottlieb Star Race that she wanted $1000
for. I ended up finding her a buyer for $100 fee instead as I have no
interest in the old Gottliebs. I only wish it could have been a Black
Knight or something I wanted. It was so clean it was amazing!!

Bought a Super Straight by Sonic at a church rummage sale. It was
1985. I didnt drive so I called a Taxi and requested a station wagon.
Told dispatch I was moving some luggage. Game was 40.00 in NEW
condition. Taxi arrived in disbelief. Loaded game and tore the guys
carpeting inside his new cab . He was pissed. Fare was like 3.00. Gave
him 5.00 and told him to keep the change. Was only 1/2 mile from my
parents house. That was a good find.

About six months ago I bought my joker poker for $250 at a whitetrash
yard sale. The only thing wrong with it was a transitor between the
target banks. The machine was covered with boxes and crap. The glass
was not on it and the playfield was filthy.
I couldn't see any noticable wear on the PF and thought to myself it
would most likely clean up nice.
I was right! there is not a blemish on this PF it's perfect. The cab.
is near perfect. The BG has some flaking through the pant legs of two
of the genies. I've been offered $800-$1000 for this game. A true
score.

The guy also had a capt fan. and snow derby, he told me $100 for
both.
The capt was shot. I think it sat outside for a while, or the guys
roof leaked or something, the PF paint was nearly gone and the PF was
wavy, if you know what I mean. The BG was broken in half.
The snow derby was torn apart and I really couldn't get a good look at
it, but it was in the same room as the capt. so figured it was water
damaged also.
I wish now that I would of bought those two games.

I got a working Black Knight for $300 in a yard sale from a guy that
was moving out of state and couldn't take it with him.

30 year ago, I got an EM for 25 bucks at a thrift store. no keys, didn't
work, but it was the machine that got me started. Since then I have had at
least one pin in the house at all times... I cant remember the name but it
sure was fun to fix and play.

Frank knows this ...the Neptune yardsale that he refers to was
actually the second yardsale that this guy had with both the juke and
Neptune for sale. About 4 years before the sale that Frank mentions,
I went to a yardsale at the same house. He had both the Neptune and
the juke (which was an ordinary 70's box that is a dime a dozen). He
wanted $300 for the Neptune. Maybe a month before the sale I had
gotten my copy of "Lure of the Silverball" which references Neptune
and Hit the Deck. As I recall, it mentioned the digital looking score
reels being something Gottlieb tried to stem the tide using an EM game
and making it look like a solid state machine, that it was a failed
experiment. Again, being a newbie, that thought came to mind when I
saw the machine. I remember, this machine was NICE ...I mean the
playfield glass and cabinet were nearly perfect as I recall. The guy
wouldn't budge on the price so I passed. I was such an idiot!!
Turned out that he didn't sell the machine or the juke and they turned
up 4 years later when the guy had another sale that Frank mentioned.

Another time when I was new in the hobby, I went to a yardsale on the
day of Sue's niece's wedding. They had advertised coca cola machines
and bar items. We arrived and the first thing I saw was a Spin Out
pinball machine. There was a yellow post it note on it that said
$50.00. Being a dumb, cheap bastard, I offered the lady $40.00. She
looked kind of offended and then I saw her husband nodding his head
toward the machie as if to say "TAKE IT"! When I asked her what was
wrong, she said in a pissed off tone, "I have $150 on the machine and
you are only offering $40". I took the post it off the machine and
handed it to her. The look she gave her husband could have killed.
They must have gotten their signals crossed. She apologized to me and
gave me the machine for $50.00! The other thing was, they had a bunch
of old embossed coke and pepsi machines that were pretty cheap. I
wished I had the money to buy them, but I didn't so I told the guy to
rent a trailer and bring them down to the Hackensack show which was in
a couple of weeks and he could made a killing. The last thing that
happened was that I had our car and not the truck. After all of this,
I had to go all the way home and get the truck to get the machine
home. I left Sue there as collateral and to make sure they didn't
sell the Spin Out to anyone else for more money while I was gone.
Needeless to say, Sue wasn't too happy about that and the fact that we
were almost late for the wedding.
