Some of us do. I was trying to understand why I did, and came to the
following conclusions:
- It was going to cost me more than the game could ever be worth.
- I might be the only person in the world that wants to see it running
again.
- I have more important things to do.
Yep all the above are probably quite true, but I kept having the sense
of duty to this old HB machine. Now this sucker was dead and salted
with the finest POS boards a HB has probably seen to date, but still I
could not figure out why I was fixing it. Not just fixing it but
putting in way more money and effort than could rationally be
explained.
Last night it kind of dawned on me. This machine (I won't even try and
call it a pin) was around when I was a teenager, and in being a
teenager I can remember how grateful I was to be able to go down to
the local arcade and get away from all the B.S. of being a teenager.
Now whether it was HB or Defender or whatever else it was that was new
on the floor, I found this to be a most fascinating experience. An
experience that I really looked forward to and enjoyed. I came to the
realization now that I am doing this out of gratitude to those
machines which were part of that experience, which may sound insane
about an inanimate device. In many ways these machines live, die and
are brought back to life by us, and I just could not let this machine
die. It had been passed over as part of a old op sell off and even the
guy that brought it in with the batch lost money selling it to me.
It makes zero sense otherwise to me unless I think about it this way.
I have restored enough machines to know from the day I bought it, it
would go pretty well the way it did, but I still bought it. Don't
regret all the cost and work but just can't rationalize doing it any
other way.
Here is where I stand with the machine as of yesterday.

You kept going because HB IMHO is one kick ass MF game, period. The
sound on the vid brought me back, thanks.

Pinball Basics DVD
I think Hyperball has a definite place in a game room. It really is a
fun game, as more of a short term diversion it, can be a blast!
Deffinatly not an only pin choice but mixed up with other games it can
be a nice little change and a bright spot in any game room...
Now I must go find that "CUE" I've been looking for... :)

There is a small following of HB folks here on RGP. As noted, it
provides a nice distraction, just letting you blast away.
I've found mine to be much more fun by adjusting the settings as found
here:

Dr. Ed has a nice HB page too... http://www.edcheung.com/album/album07/Pinball/hyperball.htm

I can't see anyone interested in owning HB going wrong with the game
for that price. I have that + in just components and parts into this
repair and I am not done. Good thing I work for food...that I whip up
out of my own groceries.... :).
I would think it's gone by now, but you never know the way things have
been lately.
Thanks John for the offer on the plastic. Email sent.
Still looking for a POTC here.....

I have a few NOS backglasses in stock, and I think I have at least one
NOS display left. I also have the RH apron bit - used, but nice.

"Old pinballers never die, they just flip out."
As I mentioned before, around Summer, 1983 the operator I worked for
had us sledgehammer two Hyperballs. I remember smashing the
backglasses on both. We were not "allowed" to keep any of the pieces.
As an operator, we did not buy any Rapid Fires. I personally bought
one from a fly-by-night operator for $200 in like new condition in
late '82 or early '83. I sold it through Super Auctions for $400 about
5 years ago. Still working I might add!
