Thanks Beemus. :) If in fact that's it, why someone would post that
as an "Official Stern Announcement" and than just let it go on is
beyond me. I guess that's what trolls do. Regards.

We shall no longer refer to Jason as "Crazy J" ...he will be
"Cocktease J" until he finishes his announcement tease.

I wouldn't go nearly as far as calling Jason a troll, reality would be
quite the opposite. I witnessed that first hand on Saturday night.
On the other hand, the Cocktease J is pretty damn funny. You should
say what it is though Jason, even just e-mail me and tell me, I won't
say anything. :) Especially if it is a TDK update, it needs one so
bad...

Still coming soon. Jason never disappoints. His track record of early good
news is second to none. And he's had some big announcements in the past. So
well worth the wait. LTG :)

If you need to know so badly, please by all means email me directly or
call Stern 1-800-KICKERS.

The only troll I see is the one posting the hate ;) I just posted a
topic and wanted it to go from there and see what others have heard.
But again like always in any thread of news someone has to make fun or
take the hatefull side of things. Anyone that knows me knows that I
of all people care about pinball and it's future and it does indeed
look good !

And another thing, where did I "promise" it would be posted in any
specified date. I remember a certain Spidey code fiasco that went
not as planned. Alas things don't go as planned but by all means
Spidey was updated and then some, and then some, and then some. Fact.

But you have to admit that running into a Pinball newsgroup and yelling "BIG
NEWS!" about the only remaining pinball company, and then fleeing, is akin
to running into a Star Trek convention and yelling "SHATNER!". And if
there's no Shatner - well, you'd better hope these were all TNG fans.

Announcing there will be some news and not offering a shred of
information is not news, it is only being a tease. As no info was
revealed nor any hint provided of what it involves is really just a
heads up.

I have no problem with anyone coming on and saying there may be an
announcement coming up soon, just point out that this in itself is not
news.

From a philosophical point of view, if you know something that the
general public will eventually become aware, and keep it to yourself,
you are not providing a service to the pinball community. No secrets
are being shared and nobody is the better for it. If you spill the
beans, then you can argue that you broke the story. What benefit to
anyone is gained by stating you know something?

Imagine watching the news and at the beginning of each story they say
something happened to some company and we aren't going to say what or
give you any futher details. They'd have to call it something other
than news,,,maybe tease.

This isn't CNN, it is RGP. And often passion and excitment rule the day. You
hear something, get sworn to secrecy, and yet the Earth shattering news
can't be held in any longer. So hobbyists often want to share at least that
much. And Jason has friends at Stern. So maybe something really good is
about to happen ?

We have been seeing update action lately. Maybe even better things are on
the horizon. I'm patiently waitning. LTG :)

Remember back in the 80's when Lee Iacocca was hired to bring an
almost dead company lossing millions back on it's feet into a new
direction ? Basically the same concept at Stern is what I hear is
being performed there. Outside interests are involved to make the
company bigger, better, and taking it in the direction it needs to go
to thrive and survive.
As to who it is that's at the helm I don't know. We are seeing code
updates on games and it's a great thing !

I believe a good company stays strong and assures your customers to
buy the product if that company listens to it's customer base and
makes a product people want. Code and finished product is a main
gripe. It's not a matter of the coders or developers not listening,
they know what people want. It's the deciding factor of Mr Stern that
makes the call. Plain and simple he is not making wise choices. Get
someone in there that can make the choices that need to be made to
make the company bigger and better.

I think it's a great idea that BBH is delayed and they are re-running
product to sell. Gives ample time to have BBH complete and out the
door as a 100% finished product. Smart move.

I wish Stern would use the internet as a tool for business as an
interactive with it's customers.
Example, free video advertising on gameplay and descriptions like WMS
did with promo videos. Also use a voting tool as to what themes/titles
people would like to see. It's gives the company an idea of what could
sell the most units. Easy and free things that could be linked to
the website.

These are my words and the take on things.

I have heard that Stern is re-running several titles whose licenses

I have heard that there are now some outside investors involved.

Thanks for the update Jason. I was on Sears and Costco sites a few

preformed by ???. Can't remember who it was, maybe Betson. But at
the time I began to wonder if this meant they might have a new

You're generally right about investors but think about this, what does
stern have? Inventory (nope) Expensive Machinery to liquidate (nope)
Some good people (a few) Huge possible money-making licenses (nope -
they sub-license) When you look at those things investors can only be
there to do one thing, make more money with pinball machines.

This is a perfect analogy for Stern actually. Chrysler was a joke of
a company and then Lee came in and they continued to be a joke of a
company for many years to come. They build subpar products, and
nobody would really miss them if they were gone (or when they are gone
which will be probably be soon).

Sounds just like Stern. They too can bring in some two-bit self
proclaimed messiahs and have them keep hashing out crap games that
nobody cares about. Sooner or later they will fold, and the sooner
the better.

Pinball was a living form of art, a true representation of American
craftsmanship that could be looked at nostalgically, up until around
1999.

If Stern keeps sullying up the world with its abominations of
pixelated artwork, garbage craftmanship, and piss poor incomplete
software then you can kiss the proud and adoring memories of pinball
goodbye. Pinball will be just be thought of as another other cheap
ass joke product that looks like it was thrown together in China.

You bring up a good point of CPR. You have people, alot of people
that love the classic Stern's. Artwork, playfields, backglasses, and
plastics being reproduced. Now did anyone see the Gary Stern
interview at expo this year ;) Gary himself even pondered the idea of
bringing back the classics. No shit, running the simple, cool
classics. The crowd cheered and applauded, me included. Both
companies could work in unison. Just speaking out loud. Could you
imagine buying a NIB Star Gazer or Nine Ball !!!!! Remanufactured

Wow, re-running some classic games would be great. I prefer the
layouts of classic "flat" games from the early 1980's. A modern, more
reliable, boardset could be used, with modern software that would keep
players interested with plenty to do (and be essentially impossible to
roll over).

My votes for:

Stargazer

Nine Ball (who knows, maybe they'll get the software right on their

Who gives a sh!t about cabinet artwork. Who cares? If you have one
on location, no one will refuse to play it becasue the cab artwork is
pixelated. Looking for a distance, you can't even see it. If you buy
one for the home, it can go between two other machines if its so
bothersom. This topic has been going on for years, and is so
irrelevant (did I spell that right?)

> garbage craftmanship

broken switches are not Stern's fault. As far as the game itself,
they are built quite nicely. Blame ops for not taking care of them on
location, but my 8 Sterns at home do just fine.

> and piss poor incomplete software

I agree here.....totally lame, there's no excuse for this and they
know it. I am all for releasing with incomplete software (most
software companies do this), however you have to release patches in a

Wow, that's something I would like to be a part of....sitting around
thinking up ways to produce kick tail pinball machines. Don't
forget the best way to hit the home market is many pinball tables or
experiences available in one 250lb shell, let's get back to a modern
approach on leveraging cheap memory and start licensing new software
on the hardware platform of a pinball machine. There's definitely
margin in software, not so much in outsourced/final assembly
manufacturing sold through distribution chains in fairly light
volume. We don't need full on virutal pinball, but re-theming a pin
needs to get easier somehow....

Anyway, since I have no connection to Stern, I'll post my desire to
participate at some level. I have an engineering degree and many
years of business leadership on my resume', a passion for pinball and
frustration with(more importantly a desire to help improve) the
lackluster performance of the current and only pin producer still
standing. It won't be easy, but then again, there's already ways to
make a pinball with generic PF Interface boards for coils, GI and
motors so that a pf could be swapped in minutes. As for the
software, piece of cake, USB stick access behind the coin doir for a
specific game boot. C'mon, I can't be the onlly one thinking about
stuff like this am I?

I could even so for those that demand side art and translites be
themed, they can be made available and easily interchangeable.
Believe me I appreciate these things too, but damn if I had a 'Stern'
Pinball Platform in my house that with a few minutes effort could
change to a completely new pinball experience, and I free up the space
required by the traditional platform (one game = one theme), and I
save $$$ becuase I don't have to pay 4k for a new game experience
(cause Stern doesn't have to pay for the raw materials, absorb or pass
on commodity costs and labor) we all win.

Shit, event the ops that only have a few pinballs win. Now you don't
have to lug the games back and forth, just the pf and interchangeable
artwork.....

Sorry, I can't doing anything without a lot of passion.

The single one issue that has impacted my buying is software and
incomplete games. It is no secret when this started. Keith, Steve,
Dennis, and Lyman have proven game play and rule set can save any
theme or art package. Gary needs to build his credibilty before
singing a new tune and preaching being a "changed man" (i.e interested
in what collectors want).

finish incomplete games, all of them. This is a "principal" issue
that is tangable evidence there has been a philosophy change

Sub contract design to those with a proven track record. You do not
have to reinvent the wheel if it performs. In my mind Keith has not
made a dud yet.

Can not be on the fence regarding collectors. FGY, SM and BSM are
sucess stories. WOF, BDK, IJ4 and 24 are not.

His rumoured interest in changing is nice but it is hardly a
behavior. I will wait and see. For me classic games remain doesn't
really do it for me personally. Complete different playing
experience.

I want Stern to prosper but not if they keep status quo..

I'd like to see it too. But I doubt it would happen. The amount of games
you'd have to sell to make it possible isn't likely. And they wouldn't be
selling for 1980 prices, they'd be 2010 prices. LTG :(

At the Stern tour for expo this year I asked if it was possible to re-
run their non-licensed 80s games, and they just smiled and said they
had some plans for the future we'd have to wait to see. Guess I should
have read more into that than I did at the time!

Well if FF can remake King of Diamonds and sell it; I'm sure Stern
could along side their normal pinball operations, re-run some of the
more popular older, Stern electronics' titles.

Only thing I see that would be important here is that they keep at the
current line rather then do a pin2k and completely bum over with
fingers crossed, hoping older titles and designs alone will sell.

Too early to tell yet if FF can remake KOD, sell it, and do it profitably. I
hope they do. Because that sets the stage for other great things. LTG :)

Yeah but something tells me that for all the love and effort put into
KOD,it just ain't gonna fly w/ the public.
I'd like to be proven wrong BUT I'm in the BK camp about pinballs
future prospects

It's dying day by day and nothing is gonna bring it back.
Good thing is that the rare bird future pin dorks being born in the
next few years will be able to pick up our A list titles fer next to
nothing,,ya know how we used to get em back in the mid 90's ;)

Just ask any woodrail collector, good times to buy cause most of the
guys are too old to move heavy objects around or dead

lol ;) I'm not sure how to answer your post but sure I expect people
who can't move a game will have little interest in it, also doubt
anyone born today, not knowing pinball would buy'em either.

Well it's pretty simple..

Where do the future players get exposed to pinball now days ???

The arcades are mostly gone

I got my pinball bug implanted from being 10-11 years old and hangin
out in arcades in the early 80's

Granted I mostly forgot about pinball btwn the ages of 14 and 25 BUT
The seed had been planted so when I got a little older I wanted to own
these cool mechanical wonders.

They at least for me give e a nice nostalgia feeling when I fire 'em
up
I don't have much hope for the hobby when those bonds can't be forged
anymore.

John, you have a positive and passionate outlook for pinball and that
is commendable, but
I have to say that yours is an unrealistic dream.

The processes you suggest are not new, and I know you know this. The
cost
is/would be higher for the base unit, and "kits" (as they have been
known in the past) w/ plug in playfields have not been offered because
there is no money
to be made selling just playfield and/or art packages at a reduced
price. It was tried at Williams and other
pin companies.

The plan failed. There was hardly any interest after they were built
and offered. Even the guys (distribs) who begged for kit development
didn't want them after testing them.

Suddenly, sloppy graphics replacement jobs and the location asking for
the "old" game back caused big problems and some mighty ugly pinball
machines.

The Americana in pinball is a complete package designed from the start
to be ONE GAME. With virtual pinball anything can be done, but
sales of traditional pinball require a purpose-built package. The
universal pinball product is also very limiting. When anything can be
changed,
true innovation emerges. You might buy your ideal game, but I wonder
how many others would.

Your ideas work for virtual pinball, but not for physical ones. With
P2K, it ended up that the BOM was
$600 higher for all those plugs and universal connection capabilities
(plus the monitor and software/animation costs), and buyers were
already not wanting pinball at the cheaper price.

There is profit in selling a complete pinball game. Profits have
historically been necessary to sustain the pinbiz.

You seem like a guy full of energy and good sense. You could probably
make a good contribution to pinball, but there is a lot to learn about
pinball history and knowledge first.

There is also this basic problem: The present leadership of the last
pinball company needs replacement badly. When that is done, pinball
might have a glimmer of a hope to move forward. Only then could
anything "new" be tried.

Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'.
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'.

Steve,

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. I hear you. Damn, it would be nice
for the home market though....I could just lug 60 lbs worth of new
playfield downstairs versus the whole darn game everytime. Plus, I
would need at least 30 complete pf's before I ran out of room! Oh
well, I still hold out hope. BTW, what do you recommend for reading
up on the history of pins (and are you speaking about profit
limitations on the concept or mechanical limitations)?
