I'd like to announce a new replacement Pinball Database available on the
Internet at

http://www.ipdb.org

(backup URL: http://pdb.thewolfden.org)

That site now containes all the data from the original IPD, but has some
additional features beyond the IPD, the most important of which is the
ability for users to submit game updates over the web. (These updates
will still be reviewed by a maintainer!)

The work done by Frank, David and the others for the existing IPD site
has been of immeasurable value to us all and is probably used by
everyone reading this, but as their businesses have taken off, they've
been unable to continue their excellent work.

To prevent this work from being lost, and to continue expanding the
database, a group was formed 3 months ago to rewrite the database from
scratch, with a focus on allowing the web updating as mentioned above.

This task is now complete at the sites listed above!!

Furthermore, I've been in contact with Frank Laugh, who has provided
me with the data files from the current IPD. Those files contain all
the data available currently from the IPD, as well as some additions
that Frank has been making but was unable to import into the web site.
I'll be processing those files in the next weeks to make sure all his
data is in the new site. Thanks go out to Frank for this!

The greatest new feature of the site is the ability for users to submit
updates to the game information over the web, INCLUDING UPLOADING NEW
PICTURES!! When game information is displayed, there is a link titled
"Update Game Information" in the upper right corner. Clicking on this
link allows users to submit data, files, pictures, etc. for review and
acceptance by a maintainer.

The site adds the ability to store files for each game, which might be
plastic scans, hard to find ROMs, manuals, etc.

There is a voting system for how fun you think a game is, and the
average rating is displayed along with the game data.

The manufacturer listing now includes the years of operation for that
manufacturer.

I've also added some additional information for each game: MPU/CPU
board type (Williams System 11, Gottlieb System 80, etc.) and a field
for Solid State or Electro-Mechanical.

If a search returns more than 1 game, you will get a list at the start
of the game data, so you can link directly to a particular game.

--

To find out how to link to the new site, see
http://www.ipdb.org/linkto.html

The machine.cgi and search.cgi mechanisms will still work, and you can
*probably* just change your link to use http://www.ipdb.org rather than
http://www.lysator.liu.se and it will continue to work as it always
has.

See http://www.ipdb.org/linkto.html for tools to help you build correct
links to the new site!

--

Also, the database now in use allows a number of lists to be trivially
generated. Here are some of the useful ones:

Alphabetical Game Listing http://www.ipdb.org/gengames.html
Alphabetical Abbreviation Listing http://www.ipdb.org/genabbrev.html
Alphabetical Developer Name Listing http://www.ipdb.org/gennames.html

For other lists, see http://www.ipdb.org/lists.html

--

For comments, suggestions, enhancements and questions, please contact
pin...@thewolfden.org.

Now get out there and start submitting all your data!! (Just don't all
hit the web site at the same time!)

Thanks for taking this on Wolf! I submitted corrected info on Funhouse a
couple of years ago and it never got changed... maybe now it will.
Thanks for helping us all keep accurate info on these games.

Well, 14 hours and 14,000 hits later, and everything seems to still be
working (except my Internet connection feels warm). No major problems,
and only 1 minor one that I don't think anyone even noticed. :)

There have already been a number of changes uploaded, and a considerable
interest, judging from the email I've been receiving. Lots of promises
for more pictures, too, which is great!

Thanks to everyone for all the comments!

Just a note on submitting URLs into the fields -- I've been deleting
most of them. :(

There are so many sites in existance already that have URL lists, as
well as the fact that everyone has different sites that they like, that
I don't think the Pinball database should start trafficing in URLs.
Still, I have been leaving a few, such as URLs for owner lists or
significant documentation projects (such as the TZ third magnet at
www.shootmagain.nl).

Quite a lot of data should be added in the next few weeks, from what
I've been offered.

This is great Wolf! Thanks for the New and Improved Database!
I've already submitted a few pictures of Stern and Bally games in my
collection along with updated information on these games (Lightning,
Star Gazer, Eight Ball Deluxe).

(Now to set up and turn on the rest of my Stern collection so I can
snap a few photos to upload some more) I need a bigger house to have
these all set up at the same time.....

Everyone gather around the keyboard and repeat after me...

Hip, Hip, HOORAY!!!

Seriously, the site looks great and I'll be submitting some info
myself soon. I am one of the many who submitted to the IPD and never
got the data posted. Now if I can just find what I sent...

Wolf, Thanks to you and all who helped make this become a reality. It
is an invaluable tool. I have sent you one pic already and a few game
ratings. I have some other games in my collection that you need pics
for. I will get those in the next week or so...Thanks again..I know I
will be on this site several times per week.......

You can submit them though the web site, now. Search for the game you
want, click "Update Game Info" in the upper right corner of the game
listing. Scroll down to "Edit/Add Images". Click "Add Image".

Whoa! Ok, so now the IPD is back in business and ready for updates. I'll
have to put in some. Thanks, Spike, and everybody else who was involved.

Might be a good idea to add links to the fliers archives (GameArchive,
Riffhard's, and the cydn.org one) also?

You can submit NOW.

1- Surf to http://www.ipdb.org

2- Search for your game.

3- When it comes up, click "Update Game Information" in the upper right
corner of each game listing. A new page comes up that allows you to
modify the game information.

4- AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS NEW SCREEN is a button that says "Edit/ADD
Images". The screen changes to one that allows you to modify the images
list, including adding new images.

5- Click the button "ADD Image". A new screen comes up that allows you
to specify the image on your computer that you want to add, the title to
give to the image, and an place to put your name if you want.

6- Click "Submit Image". The image is uploaded and a thumbnail is make
for it. A new screen is displayed showing what was uploaded.

7- Click "Click here to return to the edit image list". (This step is
going away.) You're back to the image list screen.

[repeat back to step 5 as often as you want to upload each image, then
continue.]

8- Click the button "Save" to save the changes you've made. NOTHING IS
FOR CERTAIN UNTIL YOU CLICK SAVE ON THIS SCREEN. It takes you bake to
the basic game info listing screen.

9- Click the button "Submit Update for Review".

10- If you entered an email address, wait for the confirmation message.
