Funhouse. Rudy's in da house! Thanks to many others of you who provide the
parts to make this happen. He did an amazing job restoring the game to
almost new in the box condition. He has the patience, skill, talent, and
uncanny ability to restore a game to almost nicer than brand spanking new.
You'd have to have an absolute mountain of cash for me to ever sell this
game. Here is what was done to this game - now keep in mind, this is my
recollection (and assessment) of what was done - I'll share the link to
pictures in a second:
- Stripped the cabinet bare, and down to bare wood.
- Filled all gouges, backbox corners repaired, cabinet completely primed
and sealed. Corners of backbox straightened up, filled and repaired as
necessary
- Cabinet decals and playfield overlay from www.phoenixarcade.com were
installed (thanks Darrin - how in the world you got the inserts to all line
up so absolutely perfectly is beyond me - you either love what you do, are
just real damn good at it or both!)
- All parts top *and* bottom side are all removed including the t-nuts
- Any and all bolts, nuts, screws, brackets, plates, and all assemblies and
metal pieces (top and bottom side of the playfield)were tumbled for two days
- Mylar was removed, playfield was sanded down to bare wood
- Playfield was prepped, clear coated, sanded, buffed, etc
- Playfield was cleared by Chris himself in a controlled environment
- All wiring and looms were cleaned, new ground braid was installed - wires
are run beautifully everywhere
- All boards inspected, repaired, cleaned as necessary, new battery holder
installed
- All coils on the underside of the game are factory williams coils, and are
the correct strength per the manual
- All metal (top and bottom side) was polished by hand if not tumbled
- Bottom of cabinet was sanded, and repainted the inside, making sure not to
paint over the wms stickers inside
- Lockdown bar assembly was polished to a shiny bright metal, and new
stickers were installed on assembly
- Ramps were flame polished
- New plastics set (thanks Ray at www.actionpinball.com)
- New bumper caps (thanks dugmar) www.funhousepinball.com
- New ramp protectors, scoop protectors (thanks cliffy)

This is definately one of the best cabinet paint colour matches I have seen.
I was hoping that you could share with us what type/brand/colour of paint
you used. I have been looking into this for about a month now as I'm on the
verge of beginning my own FH resto. What I've been able to find is that
there are lots of different answers to this question, but from what I've
seen of your resto I'd like to go with whatever you used as it's tried and
true.

restorations are some of the hardest.Playfields that only tilt, making Rudy
work all the way ,Mylar removal,etc.Between you and Donnie plus a couple
that I sold I have done 7 of them this year.Some were touch up and
clears,some overlays that were cleared and one was an NOS playfield swap.All
of them needed cabinet decals which I think says alot about the average
condition of these games 14 years later.Luckily you are close enough for me
to come over and put my balls in Rudy's mouth as punishment for the stress
he has caused me this year :-)

the edge. Peek at other people's decal application and look closely at
the corner and the edges. I'm not saying others do shoddy work, but
Chris goes over the top. Not to belabor the point but it never dawned
on me how different the underside of the pf could look. I figure a
clean underside is a clean underside. But looking at Andy's pics you
see how the wiring is so incredibly neat and perfectly routed. Wow, I
want mine to look like that! It really is like watching a carpenter
apprentice vs. a master carpenter. The apprentice's work might look
good to a lot of people, but he won't even begin to compete against the
techniques of a master.
Beautiful gameroom Andy! Very impressive. Thanks for the photos - I
learned alot!

And matching that Funhouse Blue is no easy task either!! I think I've said
it before, but I'll say it again - Chris does excellent work, ... I'd buy a
pin from him any day.

aspect of this FH. That's why I took closeups of the corners (and
everything else too) but Chris sands the edges and touches them up with a
degree of skill I have truly come to appreciate. I have a re-decaled CC
(bought elsewhere) that has razor edge trimming, not nearly as clean and
perfect as Chris does them. If / when my CC gets over there, that is
something I'm interested in having him clean up for me.

long it takes to fill a room with premium examples of all the games you
want - then the other battle is keeping them all running right. Having
Chris go through them is not a bad step in that plan at all.

Haven't looked at Andy's pics because I also have a Funhouse restored by
Chris, but I think you missed part of this, Manic. Chris repaints the
entire cabinet (though he does a nice job of masking off the stenciled area
on the back of the backbox). His paint matches those decals perfectly.

the full decal job will cover all sides except the top and back of the backbox.
And yeah I had a rudy and know what an SOB that is to match... heck I've seen
some from the factory where the head and cab didn't seem to match....?

Well, somebody is confused! :)
My point was that there's more blue paint showing on the game than *just*
those front edges of the backbox. The insides of the cabinet are blue,
which a good bit of is visible beside the playfield. The inside of the
backbox is also visible in front of the backbox.
Admittedly, none of these areas are *directly* adjacent to the decal
itself, but in the world of color matching things that are supposed to
match, it all still matters. A first class old car restoration will have
the same color paint underneath the floor mats as on the outside of the car
(in cases where they came that way from the factory) even if you can't
*see* that part. :)
