Hello Group,

I need your trusty expertise on a EM. It's a Gottlieb Big Hit. (Yes, the
game with a ball shooter in the middle of the bottom of the playfield) The
problem I have is that the game just won't activate the playfield.I can push
the credit button and the score motor will start for just a few seconds and
stop. No reset of the scores. So I manually put the game in a "reset"
condition (scores zero, drop targets back up..etc.etc..) but still the
playfield is dead.(i'll even put the ball to the 1st ball)

I would TILT the game and press the Credit button and the playfield lites
back up but won't reset the score (if any score is there) and even try to
push the flipper button to put the ball in play (Remember ...this is the
game that has NO manual ball shooter)

Help!

Was this game just purchased as is and not shopped out? If so would suggest
going thru all the relays in the game at least visually, operate by hand and
observe switches closing/opening. Trying to fix an EM one thing at a time
without a thorough go-thru will make you pull your hair out.

I had the same problem on a Q*uick D*raw I had.
The credit button would run the score motor for a second or two, but no
score reel resets or game play.
Here's what I ended up doing.... (I know this may be different for your
game, but alot of Gottliebs are pretty much the same.
1. Cleaned and adjusted all score reel switches.
2. Cleaned and adjusted the 10, 100, 1000 point relays in the back box. (L,
M & N I believe)
3. Cleaned the switches on the "S" Start relay
4. Cleaned all the switches on the "AX" Relay (reset relay)
(When I triggered this relay it would reset, but it was not getting
triggered upon startup. This is usually controlled through the "S, P and U"
relays. Clean the switches on those relays first)
5. Cleaned the player unit disc.
6. Pushed the credit button....
7. Played a game on my pretty much working machine.

This took about 2 hours
You will find more switches need cleaned after playing. Especially if it has
been sitting awhile. I usually get the game to reset and serve up the ball
then troubleshoot from there. Probalb ynot the most effective way to do it,
but it works for me !!
The 10, 100 and 1000 relays in the back box controll the score reels and the
chimes for the respective points. The 10's relay, "L" I think, also
controlls the match unit.

Hope this helps a bit. I'm still new to this hobby.

Thanks for the input, guys. It's NOT easy working WITHOUT the schematic for
the game. Bill I had MOST of the relays ID'ed..but couldn't figure out what
the AX relay (in the head) was for.
Gonna try all the above tonight (right now) and let ya know what happened

Again, Thanks Mf101723 & ICE!

I believe the older (Not sure what the year of your machine is) machines had
3 reset relays, "A,B & C" these were later replaced by the AX & BX relays.
You might have the A,B & C relays.
If they are labeled look for "Game Over, Start, Reset and Last Ball Relays"
just to name a few w/o looking inside my machines.
Let me know the progress.

Hello Ice,

This Gottlieb is from 1977. Yes, last night when I had read your input...I
went right straight to the AX relay and that was the problem. (That's what I
was after) That AX relay is like an Index relay(or game relay) on a
Bally.(Obvoiusly I'm used to Bally games) But I love Gottlieb more! I've
finally got a hold of a few Gottliebs.

Unfortunetly some of the labels have fallin' off but MOST have thier relays
marked (The lettered ones) Well....now that the problem has been found (well
at least one of the many...haha) what to do about it. The AX relay...has the
lock relay (as you know to hold ) and the little spring thats on these
relays don't seem to have enough pull to make the relay operate correctly.
I'm gonna try to go by a hardware store and see what they may have.

What Gottliebs do you have?

I have:
Big Indian
Spin A Card
Big Hit
Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind (SS)

Did you try lifting the game up then dropping it?
