So Gomez is doing the Fall game released by Stern?
Hell Yeah!
That's news I'm really looking forward too :-)
--Evert
Stern seems to be very secretive about the next game, I wonder what's
up their sleeve (please don't say a Golden Tee pin..)
- B
The playfield design layout that was up on the Stern Facebook page
(and then taken down) did have similar center inserts to Soprano's.
If i had to throw a guess out there i'd say that the new pin is a
George Gomez designed Avatar pin with a layout somewhat similiar to
Sopranos/LOTR? Just a guess though!

I get all mad at Stern. And now they give me a woody with this? (and
I don't mean wood rail)

TRON
What movies are due out in the fall?
Brian
Detroit Pinball
Coming late this fall:
last Harry Potter movie (Deathly Hollows) - hope not!
Tron: Legacy - THAT would be cool!
Green Hornet (VERY late fall, release is Dec 22, but the pin comes out
first so...) Superhero themes usually work!
If I was a betting man I'd lay odds on it being one of those three.
This is without any consideration of who owns what license, their
previous relationships with Stern, etc.
Movies Due in the Fall/Winter timeframs:
- Resident Evil
- Tron
- Harry Potter
- Chron of Narnia
- Transformers
Brian
Detroit Pinball
I'll put my money on it being TRON: Legacy. Consider that Gomez worked
on the original Tron arcade game in the 80s :) (I think he designed
the controller)
My bets are Tron. "unconfirmed"
The whole POTC license debacle is false news and Stern does and will
work with Disney again. "confirmed"
Oh my god would a Green hornet pin be awesome. Way better than Tron.
But I think I agree with the masses that it is likely Tron.
Brian

Gary says they must have 2 movies made or to be made to make a pin.
That leaves GH out.
Stern really wanted the Harry Potter license, but apparently JK Rowling
doesn't like pinball.
> Tron: Legacy - THAT would be cool!
That would be cool since George was involved in the winning design for
the Tron video game back in the 80s.
> Green Hornet (VERY late fall, release is Dec 22, but the pin comes out
> first so...) Superhero themes usually work!
Doubtful Stern would pick this one up as Green Hornet is a 2nd or 3rd
tier superhero. The green hornet show from the 60s is really, really,
bad. Best part of it was the theme music.

I think he designed the whole cabinet. The tron connection is enough
for me to put my money there.
I think we nailed it. Time will tell.

Tron's a possibility, but my money is still on Avatar for the
following reasons:
1. 2 sequels in the works for Avatar plus the extended Special Edition
version of the first movie is being released in IMAX theaters this
fall.
2. Guaranteed success. Stern like's to go with the sure-thing
blockbuster hits with sequels. Tron could flop just as easy as it
could be a hit. Plus there won't be a lot of clips/material to work
with prior to the movie coming out.
I could be wrong, but i don't think it is too late for Avatar!

"Unobtainium"? Stoopid.
Evolved tail-to-whatever hookups? Stoopid.
The whole Avatar premise was also stoopid. Technologically unfeasible.
And even the greediest of humans/corporations would not lay waste to
those creatures like they did. That was horrible, and quite stoopid.
It was a fun couple of hours, but overall it was stoopid. I was glad
when it was over.
But money talks, I suppose. However, I just think Tron would be a
better theme for a pin.
Did I mention that I thought Avatar was stoopid?
Maybe it's because I grew up watching Batman on a channel that didn't
show Green hornet, so I never saw it until a couple years ago on some
cable station.
Isn't there supposed to be a superman re-reboot coming too? Maybe
they'll do that.... that's overdue for an update.

Plus Tron has stood the test of time and with a killer looking
followup it looks very good.
All those geeks from the 80's now have $$ to buy a pin. Tron would be
the better theme IMHO of the 2.
Put on your business hat, if you had your money invested and were
looking for a return, what would you do? Proven winner - Avatar all
the way !!! Not even close. IMO.
What the hell does he mean by Batman std.?????? Now for sure I am not
going to miss the George Gomez seminar at the NW pinball show in
Seattle next month. Woohoo??
Randy
So, call me crazy, but what exactly his George referring to with
Batman "STD"? Did I miss something and batman has a sexually
transmitted disease? Is there a batman standard of some kind? Upon
first reading, I had assumed he meant software, but std is not an
abbreviation for software of which I'm familiar. Does Bruce wayne
have a short term debt problem?
I'm being serious... someone clue me in on std.
Tron would be great and all but why should they choose Tron after all
these years? It doesnt make any sense. Probably Avatar. Theres a huge
pile of 80's movies/video games that could be made into great pins
(whatever hasnt already been done) but none of them make any sense
right now. It would make more sense to use a theme that is somewhat
current.
I think Tron is wishful thinking, I wouldnt get your hopes up too
high.

Yeah, sure, in the future, with a hopefully more evolved humanity, no
one would have a problem with blasting the crap out of sentient alien

gleefully get medieval on their asses.
I found it unbelievable, the whole attack sequence felt wrong. Maybe
you are more jaded than I am. Or warmongering. Me, I'm a pacifist.
Appears to be software test design or software test document.
I don't know a thing about Tron but after seeing the first trailer I
thought OH NO, what a bad theme...
After seeing the second I think it can be a pretty good theme for a
pin :-)
It's good to see another designer back at Stern ;-)

Not the most family-friendly theme, but neither is RBION or SS.
KRB (LOTR, TSPP, and soon RS)
TRON on a rethemed Sopranos would be a cool game. I like the wire
form ramps but that cool glowing blue plastic that Gomez made the
original TRON arcade handles would be cool for the ramps.

was on the team that made the Tron arcade game!
I see how Tron attracts the hard core pinball audience (middle aged,

http://usergallery.myhomegameroom.com/gallery/bspins
Agreed. Tron would make a cool pinball license and appeal to the hard
core pinball audience, but Stern would be making a poor business
decision if they were to go thru with it. The original Tron wasn't
even that big of a success (33 million box office), and i'd give the
new movie about a 80% chance of flopping at the box office. Wives and
kids aren't going to want to watch it. Only 35-50 year old males that
liked the original and which make up one of the smallest demographics
of movie-goers. Plus, there's too many other 80's reboots coming out
this year to compete with and most of them will end up being crap
anyway. They should leave movies/shows like Red Dawn, The Karate Kid,
the Smurfs, the Breakfast Club, A-Team, Dukes of Hazard, Knight Rider,
Scooby Doo, Footloose, G.I. Joe, Transformers, Short Circuit, etc. in
the 80's where they belong. imho. Quit ruining all the stuff that i
grew up loving in the 80's! Venting over :)
On the other hand we have Avatar. #1 movie of all time with two
sequels in the works. 2.8 billion and counting in Worldwide sales.
There's no comparison! Avatar would be a much sounder and less risky
choice for a new pin theme.

And as a pinball theme, other than some photoshopped stills
there's not too much Avatar-ish you could do. Maybe animate a

AFAIK, Stern is looking to make pin games that have movie sequels. Has
there ever been a "Green Hornet" movie made before?...and not talking about
the TV show.
Is there anyone younger than 35 that has ever heard of the Green Hornet?
TRON is a sequel, more popular with a younger fan base and I feel can
generate much more excitement.

Besides it being a crappy movie, Avatar might have a chance during or when
the other two Avatar movies come out and continues to be popular.
The next Avatar seems like it's going to be under the sea. Soooo, maybe a
really cool tri-level playfield could be really effective IF done right.

Barney
I agree that Tron lends itself better to being a pinball theme, and
would sell better to the RGP crowd than Avatar would. I would
personally buy a Tron pin before buying Avatar based on theme alone.
I thought Avatar was a mediocre movie with great special effects.
With that being said I think Avatar would still put up better sales
numbers overall with OPs and World-wide sales even if Tron is a run-
away hit. Avatar is much less of a risk. I just have a feeling that
the Tron movie is going to bomb and be out of theaters within a
month! The director is a first time film director that can make a
cool commercial or movie trailer, but can he convey a great story or
bring out great performances from the actors? Basically, Is he
another McG or is he the next James Cameron? If Stern was my company
and i was putting my money into a new pinball machine I would go with
the sure thing (Avatar).

I know someone who is 19 and can't wait for TRON. He's even mad that he

Barney
simply saying there are tron fans younger than you suggest. I'm in my
mid / late 20's and have a lot of friends who are pumped for it. The
trailer gave me chills just thinking of the old one. I even used to
play that Tron GL racing game for mac back in the late 90's. Last
year at Papa, I took a photograph in front of the Tron cabinet with my
wife and brother because we are all big fans and hadn't seen one in a
while.
Just because something was created before someone was born doesn't
mean there isn't a fan base or it can't resonate. I'm a big I love
Lucy fan, Archie Bunker makes me laugh, and I used to have a crush on
Cindy Williams and Ava Gardner. I just finished watching every
original Star Trek last month on my AppleTV. How many star wars fans
are out there who think Episodes 1, 2, and 3 suck, but love 4, 5 and 6
even though they were created before they were born?

I agree, those trailers are da bomb. The visual style of the movie
just opens itself up beautifully for endless lighting opportunities.
If it is Tron, hopefully Stern can get creative with how they execute
the lighting effects in the game. I could visualize wicked DMD games
too - from disc throwing targets to hitting specific ramp shots to get
your "cycle" to perform certain blocking moves to destroy other cycles
(full screen DMD Stern - not that 2/3 crap). The artwork has great
possibilities too with a darker theme accented with neon colors.
I'm getting jazzed just thinking of the possibilities. I haven't
watched the movie in years, but I think it's time to pop in the DVD
tonight....

appetite4pinball -
Tron was released on July 9, 1982 in 1,091 theaters grossing USD $4.8
million on its opening weekend. It went on to make $33 million in
North America, moderately successful considering its $17 million
budget
Moderately Successful in my book is not a flop - Sure it was not a
super grosser but it did double its budget...
According to IMDB
Tron 6.6/10 23,000 votes
Avatar 8.4/10 228,000 votes
Appreciation of Tron is basically limited to a hand full middle-age
uber geeks world wide. You never see it running on the movie
channels. The ratings must be putrid because I see all kinds of
movies from that era re-run ad nauseum, but not Tron.
Tron would probably be a cool pin, but a disaster financially as a
theme. Personally I'd rather own a Tron pin, but Avatar is by far a
better theme for Stern to pick. Still want my ESPN Sportcenter pin -
the pin that could bring back the $$$ to route pins!
John
The trailers are so cool because the director is one of the best in
the business at doing commercial work. He did the Gears of War and
Halo ads along with ads for Nike and Saab. All of his work is very
stylized in a very cool and futuristic way which is perfect for Tron.
The big unknown is how he will do with a feature film since he has
never done one before.
Here is a link to some of Joseph Kosinski's work:

26 million in today's dollars is 57 million. Even so, Tron became a cult
classic being much more popular and talked about after it's release.
Barney
TRON was considered a failure for Disney Standards and movies such as
that don't get air time... Note numerous other disney movies that have
stunk and do not get run.. When was last time you saw Black Beards
Ghost or Apple Dumbling Gang Rides again.. You don't.. It is a Disney
Movie and if it runs it will only be on the Disney Channel...
Avatar Pin would be Great - Tron Pin would be Great - ESPN Pin would
be Great (Though I would not buy) but atleast the PINS Keep coming..
If we want cult classic, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is the way to go. And
it has seven more years than Tron doing that cult classic stuff. LTG :)

In the day, Tron was awesome, and the IMDB numbers are curious, but
hardly indicative, and don't represent anything except the people who
voted. The comparison between the box office of Tron and Avatar is
largely one of apples and oranges. In the day of Tron, there was no
omni-hype machine as there is today, in the way of corporations
generating a product, licensing & tying it into everything three times
over, and advertising it, ad nauseum.
There is obviously the interest, and thus the market, as determined by
Disney, or there would be no sequel.
That being said, I fear the new film, and will make no effort to see
it- many things that were memorable in their time, should remain
there, and not regurgitated, as sequels ofter are. Perhaps I will
watch the original again, or more likely, just remember what I do from
20 years ago.
I would never own an Avatar machine, if for no other reason than
because of the endless hype & BS that was manufactured for the film.
Another film I have made no effort to see.
Never again are we likely to see a new machine that is not a licensed
tie-in, which is unfortunate, IMHO.
Ray~
> So in 29 years Avatar will be okay for a pin theme ?
Not necessarily however, TRON came out at a time when video games were
taking off in popularity in arcades across the country. It simply captured
the moment and beyond. If I remember correctly, the movie was pretty
accurate about explaining how computers work and therefore how video games
work. I think kids and young adults were able to relate to that later in
life while playing video games. While capturing the fancy of the younger
demographics it was repeatedly reinforced throughout their lives as they
grew, bought computers and finally their own video game system for the
home.
Avatar does not do any of that...unless one wants to talk about the first
time they experienced 3-D in the theatre in a big way.
Lets compare Star Wars with Avatar. Star Wars caught the imagination of
people of all ages simply because the very simple down to earth story of
good guy VS evil. Avatar can mainly be related to adults (once you get
past all the cool effects) who see good guy VS evil in the way of corporate
greed, conscientious objectors and save the planet protesters. So unless
there's a polar bear stuck on a ice cap getting ready to drown, there's not
much that younger people can relate to with a pinball machine titled
Avatar.
Barney
PS I can see it now, a hurry up feature with one direct hit that totally
destroys a tree. Cool!

Yep, and IMDB was not even around in 1982...neither was the internet for
such communication like we have today.

You might be right about that at least in the near future. I'd like to
think something in this market will change to allow for really cool
original themes to be produced.
