Hi guys. I've been a pinball owner since '94 and lived in Chicago all
my life. Somehow I've never made it to Expo, but plan on going next
week.
I was just wondering what it's like? I see they have seminars and
things planned, but do people just bring machines for others to play?
There a lot of good titles that I keep reading about on this group
that I've never seen or played in real life. I'm hoping to get the
chance to see/play some of my "dream machines".

Usually there is some great machines (and alot of them)

As long as people bring machines, thats the hard part.

Ayup! I'm going to have three machines there for free play only. (Well, two and a
half... One is sold but it's going to the show to be picked up by the owner.)

A lot of CPMers (http://www.pinballmafia.net/ -- THERE, YOU GOT YOUR HTTP://. ARE
YOU HAPPY DAN? :D) will also be bringing games to play in the free play area.

I tend to bring my less common stuff because it's just that -- games you don't see
often. (Though that kind of describes most of the games that I own!)

This year is going to be a great year at Expo!!! I can hardly wait till
next week...Good times will be had by all!! make sure that you introduce
yourself to folks so we can welcome you! (Refer to a past post from Rick
Swanson about how after his first Expo trip he debated about coming back
because he didn't know anyone...but the next year he came back.....and
the rest is history!!) :D
I have been getting my games ready and breaking them down to load up and
head for the show...
This year I am bringing...

If you need suggestions for your last 2, I'd really love to play your
Solar Fire again! :)

Either way, THANK YOU for bringing your games for us! I know it's a TON
of work and I really appreciate it. That goes for everyone else
bringing games too! :)

Oh boy... Bet you $10 SheKorn camps out on that for a while, since I took ours
apart and got lazy putting it back together again. (I'll probably join her! :) )

And of course, big ups for bringing so many games such a long distance! How are you
managing the logistics of that, anyway? I thought you guys' trailer was full around
the eight game mark?

Hello John, we covered this a couple weeks ago in another thread much
larger than this one could possibly hope to become. In summary the
feeling was you can expect... Lots of smelly, dysfunctional people that
love pinball to come together and enjoy times new and old if you have
been there before, awkwardness if not but to get over it and drink and
be merry. Some pins (lots actually), luminaries, and long nights and
early mornings depending on your level of self control and discipline.
Bring cash, buy drinks for old timers and become a noob-of-old. Its a
blast, if you are into that kind of thing (and you are, if you are going).

Yup. Bring some well-cushioned shoes and a steady supply of caffeine.
You'll be standing a lot and sleeping very little. I'm not kidding about
the shoe thing. My feet are *dead* by late Friday night / Saturday

Expect two large rooms, one with vendors and one with pinball machines on
free play; these are the Exhibit Hall. Note carefully on the schedule of
events ( http://www.pinballexpo.net/seminar.pdf ) when the Exhibit Hall is
open as it is closed during many of the seminars and during the banquet.
It's a great time, but plan your schedule around the events.

LOL!! Yeah our trailer is full around the 8 game mark...so we are
renting another one, (we are actually bringing some (4) games for
some of our friends, we are going on a hunt and gather mission
tomorrow to help get them together so we can load them up) and having
a friend pull it with more games in it!! :-) I knew when I got my
trailer I should've opted for the bigger one...but at the time I
didn't have a vehicle that could pull a bigger one, and was actually
pushin' it hauling it with 8 games in it!! :-)

Expect the time of your life. Pinball machines to play, seminars and
fireside chats. Mike Pacak has a table be sure and thank him for a great
show !

And the people. The best part of Expo. New friends, old friends, people from
the industry, famous pinball people.

And you generally get out of Expo what you put into it.

Rick Swanson went in 2000. He had a horrible Expo experience. Didn't seem to
fit in, felt like he was intruding. Had no fun at all. Was considering never
going back.

Rick did return in 2001. He asserted himself, he said hi to people,
introduced himself, asked their names, asked what they were into. He had a
totally different experience. He had the time of his life. Now he is one of
the Expo legends. People travel thousands of miles just to see Rick at Expo.

And if I might be so bold. Bring some bail money and hang out with me.
You'll have the time of your life and a pretty good shot at jail sex. And
don't miss the LTG :) Show. Lake Michigan Ballroom 10pm Friday night. At
least a couple hours of fun. PINBALL PARTS. Questions and answers. Pinball
Circus type humor. Raunchy good fun. And the WOZ Soiree with the Wizard
providing pizza at 10:15pm.

And don't miss the Jersey Jack fireside chat Thursday night with his WOZ
team, and having spent over 34 years in the industry hit Jack again as the
banquet speaker Saturday night.

Time of your life ! LTG :)

Honestly, John, the only way you find out what any show is like is to
go and see. You need to experience it and find out what interests you
and what doesn't.

Once you've been there, I think you'll want to go again. :-)

I guess I need to be clearer on that!!! I am actually bringing MM For
a friend!! ;-) Although I don't see his name on it anywhere anymore!!
Just a bunch of LAR's. and he better come over here and clean it
before I haul it up there, it is getting pretty dirty here getting
about 100 plays a night! :-)

P.S. why don't you bring a piece of that PDI glass to put in it for
Expo!! That would be really cool!!! ;-)

I believe bringing your own stool (sample?) is encouraged and allowed.
If you are not enabled to stand and play, the ADA is on your side and
organizers will more than gladly help you or be shut down/fined.

Haven't been to expo since 2004 and looking forward to it next week.
Going back in 2004 I had an idea of how I couldn't wait for my son to be
old enough to go with me on the Stern factory tour as I thought he'd get
a kick out of it. We'll now that he's old enough, he's tagging along
with me. We're both very excited about it and can't wait for next week.

Big THANK YOU in advance to all those that are bringing games to the
show. Take it from someone else who has put on a pinball show down here
in the south. It's the folks that bring pinball machines that make the
pinball shows successful.

See everyone next week. The pinball party plane from DFW leaves
Wednesday. Whoody whooo!!!!

Back on topic though, expect to have a blast at Expo. I plan on
introducing myself to a lot of new people and hanging out with those
that I already know. I'd love to come up early when it gets started,
but unfortunately I don't have the vacation time. I'm dragging my poor
wife up too! :) She is planning on getting some shopping done and
hitting the spa in the hotel.....see, I'm happy at Expo and she's
happy at the spa! That's how it works! Maybe I'll even take her out to
dinner.....depending on how much she lets me buy when I'm there! :)
Looking forward to meeting everyone up there!!

Mmmmm, yes and no.

The seminars are entirely (100%!) sit-down, same with the banquet
(duuuh).

The play area, not really. There are some chairs in there (mainly
around the peripheral) but the main play area is often swamped with
people making playing on a chair unfeasible.

To be honest, if you NEED a chair while playing, your best bet is to hit
the overnight hours when the hall clears out of everyone except the die
hards. Tons more room to move around, a lot easier access to the games,
and lugging a small stool from game to game wouldn't be a big deal. In
general it'd just work a lot better.

After a few days of standing on end all day and all night, I'm looking
for chairs like crazy just to give the feet a rest! I get a lot of
talking done during that time. :)

Bring your own stool for God's sake, it is allowed as a device of
necessity in all 50 states and protectorates. If a show, event that has
public access doesn't allow, they are in violation of the ADA and are in
for a very hefty fine from the feds.

One of the highlights of Lloyd's fireside chat was hearing him
uncensored. As we walked in last year he was making a comment about just
rolling of someone's mom which made my buddy almost lose his soda.
Priceless.
This show is different from others in that it's much more about the
people behind pinball, not just the machines.
