I am kinda "rethinking" my Spiderman preorder. Not because I don't want, I
do want it but mainly because of the economics of what makes the most sense.
Some other deals have recently surfaced and because of that I am thinking
about foregoing the Spiderman purchase and adding 2-3 other games instead
for basically the same $$.
So I am just looking to get an overall opinion from you guys.
FYI Current collection is MB, RFM/SWEP1, STTNG, and soon a JD.
The games I would be adding would be a Terminator 2, a Shadow (my old game
coming home), and a 3rd undecided game -- perhaps a Batman Forever,
Whirlwind, Earthshaker, Radical(would love this), WCS, NBAFB etc -- ie games
of this type and price range.
I should mention that I am not looking for anyone to decide for me .. just
looking for opinions on the scenario, that's all.
Thanks in advance.
Greg
I would only make that decision after playing ALL these games a lot
including the SM.
Who cares if you are getting 3 instead of 1 if you end up not really
liking the three much? Same goes for buying the one instead of the
three. Then again you can always sell some or all of the three if
later you have played SM and decide it is a must have game, and still
be able to find one NIB. I can't see buying a SM or any other game
that hasn't even been released yet before I played it and knew it's my
kind of game or not.
S-M looks like a good one to take the NIB plunge though...
meditate on it ;-)

If it were me i'd go with 3 games rather than one NIB one. Out of
that 3rd group i would eliminate BF, because it's too similiar to
STTNG in playfield layout and NBAFB because i don't really care for
it(WW and WCS would be my top choices). As far as Spiderman goes, i
would wait until you have a chance to play it a few dozen times on
location or at a friends place to see if you really like it.
Spiderman does look like it's going to be a great pin though, so i'm
sure you can't really go wrong either way!
Mike
Buying a NIB game you haven't played, regardless of how cool it looks
or sounds, is a bad idea. VERY BAD. People warned me - including Steve
Ritchie- before I made my WPT purchase - but I did anyways
I lost $1100 in a short period of time on the WPT. That was painful.
I would've rather waited awhile and not been among the first to have
the game.
I ended up buying a very nice Alien Poker and the WPT over a MM I had
offered to me.
I say be patient and put your wallet away and wait til you've played
one. Who knows, you may want it real bad and wish you hadn't waited,
but I'd rather play a friends game for a few weeks or pump a couple
hundred in quarters into a relatively fresh location game and then
decide.
If you've got the room, and they're three titles you like, I'd go
that route.
You can always pick up a SM later on if it's something you end up
liking.
Whirlwind kicks a$$......
Greg,
I passed on a CC a while back for the same reason, I got 3 games for
less than the cost of the CC & I havent looked back or regretted it .

Once again.this comes down to condition. If you have a chance to get
really nice examples of any of the 3 NON NIB pins you want,go for
those first.Nice examples of a lot of titles are few and far
between.SM will be around in good condition for long time to come.
My first NIB was POTC and I played it before buying it -
I would rate my play skill as LOW - So the arguement that you can beat
the game in a week is void for me - I just smash buttons cave man
style and have fun -
The arguement of John Wart on WPT is bust - First off it is WPT - How
exciting can that be? We are talking about SM here - Lots of Ramps and
Toys and all kinds of neat gadgets - If you like the movies and want
the pin then go for it -
Now if you want QUANTITY over QUALITY get all the cheaper pins but I
guarantee you will eventually run out of room when your LOW - B PINS
get in the way of thos A LISTERS -
I am at this current time trying to justify keep Junkyard as I get MM,
MB, AFM, TAF and all the other cookie cutter games that if you play
them they are awesome -
Now as for the price of a NIB STERN - $4K Max NIB and you can probably
see in a year or 2 for $3300 -
The following games if maintained HUO can still sell for $3300:
TSPP
LOTR
FG
POTC
possibly NASCAR
Now - WPT, RCTYCOON, RBION, MONOPOLY can all sell for $2500 range but
so do many of the other B - LIST Games...
John
I am going to reluctantly forgo Spiderman. The email I got was for an
Earthshaker (a game I was looking for) that looks fabulous and the price
IMHO is dead on for me. Its local on top of it so I can get it right away
AND look it over top to bottom but the pics it looks damn good!!
So I will most likely wheel and deal to get the Shadow back as well (it was
my old one) and then probably sit back and enjoy the 3 new games I am
getting (JD, Shadow, and Earthshaker) and if another game I want shows up ..
JUMP ON IT!!
I still want Spidey .. I am thinking roadtrip as soon as this hits the
streets cause there won't be any in my neck of the woods.
Thanks again fellas.
Now to decide if the $275 for the sinking building is worth it since this ES
is not a proto. Played a proto and really dig the sinking building!!
Greg
I would agree with the way you are going. Get the three pins (and the
sinking building). One day you will play SM, and then you can decide
if you want it NIB or used.

So you're calling one persons opinion 'wrong'? How can you do that?
Sure, you can disagree, but how is an opinion wrong?
It's awfully hard to say WPT is bust. I hated the Terminator movies,
but I really enjoyed the T2 pin. Kept it for a couple years, sold mine
and bought another. It's a great pin!
WPT was looked at by many not for the theme, but for the fact that it
was a modern SR game with 16 drop targets - when's the last SS pin you
saw with that many drops?
I love Safecracker, but the theme of Safe Cracking does not really
interest me.
I am not an outer space fan, nor a medieval times fan, but I enjoy MM
and AFM.(OK, I like Monty Python a lot, so that might qualify MM as a
theme I enjoy)
I can not stand watching Bram Stokers Dracula, but I really dig that
pin. Theme does not sell everyone on pins.
If Spiderman is as good as it looks like it'll be, Stern will re-run
it. People will have HUO games and sell them in great condition used
and they will take the depreciation hit.
A 3k AFM today is going to be a 3K AFM tomorrow and a 3K AFM 6 months
from now. If you know you like AFM and have to have a pin now, buy the
AFM, you can always enjoy it and get your initial investment out of
it. Same goes for most any of the titles on his list of suggested
titles.
You can have the fun of opening a NIB whether it's the first run or
the 5th, don't tell me people who bought the last run of LOTR or TSPP
didn't get as much 'NIB' excitement as those who bought the first run?
*AND* they got the latest code, any hardware fixes necessitated etc.
I agree some folks have to have every new title under the sun - it's
like an addiction to them. Derek will buy a NIB anything it seems.
That's fine for him, and if that's what he wants to do, he's learned
to expect to take a hit on most of them if not all when he decides to
sell.
How can you predict how well Spiderman will play in the long run when
only a few have actually played the game with an incomplete ruleset?
It has SR going for it. I like SR's games best, agreed, but SR
designed the same WPT you're dogging.
I want them all to sell well, but I also want Greg to end up with the
games he wants with the least possible out of pocket investment.
Being the first to buy any first run NIB Stern, IMO is risky if you
are worried about resale price or if you will like the game enough to
justify the price tag.
I suggest letting those who absolutely *must* be the first to spend
the $$, and then buy it after you've played it a bit. Just like any
major purchase. Do your research.
Thanks ...
BTW do you have the prototype roms for Earthshaker??
Since I am picking one up tomorrow I am looking to adding the sinking
building kit to it (its a production one of course) if they have any left
and I can't recall if the kit has the rom or not.
Again I appreciate all the kind words of wisdom.

John -
I agree with your OP on T2 - It is an awesome game -
And yes it is my OP on your statement of WPT - The game was a bust
from the beginning - Oh lets get excited over someone playing poker
and the fact there are alot of drop down targets!!! NOT!!! - I can
call your OP wrong just like I can call you OP right with regards to
T2 - That is what this board is - to inform why WE agree or disagree -
Not to sit here and nod our heads at every statement someone makes -
ULTIMATELY it is up to Greg to decide no matter how many people post
-
Every Cookie Cutter Game in the TOP 10 have toys associated with them
and oh the ramps - Thus why SM looks to be a game that could flow that
way - YES it is early -... I had my reservations about FG - I think
the theme stinks for conservative households but I got to play it at
Allentown and All I can say is wow it is a good game -
I also disagree with your insight on PINS prices - No PIN is
guaranteed to stay at any price - If the miracle in Aussie land every
happens then the influx in REPRO machines could cause a drop in prices
- What about 10 years from now huh - Stern could produce several A
Game lists causing a sell off in games that could be set back to a B
List, not likely which I would agree with you on but anything is
possible -
If anyone is looking at a PIN and saying what can I get when I tire of
it - then they are looking at it in the wrong way I would say... This
is not a MONET Painting - These are machines that will recieve wear
and tear as the years go on - only accouple of PINS are sold above the
price of a NIB as it is...
John
For the price of a Monet painting I could buy 1000 NIB pins! What's a
painting good for compared to a pinball machine? Pinball, my kind of
fine art! MattyB.

I got a WPT at a $2800 blow out but I don't buy games for an
'excitement' factor, toys and gadgets many times wear out their
welcome after a short time unless they are actually useful in playing
the game and not just for show. I'll take 16 drop targets over 16
gadgets any day of the week, if they are lame gadgets that is.
Everything on WPT's playfield is purposeful and there's plenty of it.
Yeah I like my LOTR too with all the toys but there's something about
a game that strips that all away and gets down to business like WPT
does without a pile of crap blocking my view of the ball, and SR knows
how to do that on a modern platform better than anybody.
SM's moving target bank is the good kind of gadget; it has a purpose,
greatly changes the dynamics of the pf when it's up or down like a
drop target, that's my kind of gadget. That's the coolest kind of
gadget - you don't even know it's there until it does it's thing, like
magnasave or the magnet in LOTR's ring.
If a SM ever shows up around here I will run over there licketysplit
to see if I want one for sure as it looks pretty damn good. But still
have the same advice - you GOTTA GOTTA GOTTA play the game first, even
if the game looks like a killer in photos and even if everybody in the
world says it's killer. Spoken from 25 years of experience of
occasionally not taking this advice myself : )
Lots of good opinions here on the scenario(s). Very sound advice from some
of you.
Like I said I think I am going to take the "cheaper" road LOL and skip
Spiderman right now. While I know that play before you pay is the way to go
its not always a possibility in Richmond, VA. Nascar never showed up here
(and this is a HUGE Nascar town) nor did WPT, or POTC, or FG and I don't
expect any of them too. Hell I am lucky to find any pins around Richmond
anymore. The best place to play pins around here are in collector's homes
that are in the area.
The Earthshaker deal today is kinda what made me decide to skip Spidey. It
was purely a stroke of luck that I made the call to a local guy and he had
one, sent me pics and price and I was all set. I am going to see/play it
tomorrow and should be coming home with it.
The other pin choices I listed (T2/Shadow) are actually part of a trade deal
which is why those will most likely be headed this way too. My only wish is
that the T2 was a Radical or Whirlwind. I am good to go on the Shadow,
especially considering it was once my game.
I have no real problem paying the money for a pin I want (assuming I have
the $$, LOL) afterall I do own a MB and it wasn't cheap. Neither was the
RFM/SWEP1 combo or my super nice STTNG (ask Scott Ifkovits about this
one) -- not complaining just commenting.
Anyway just wanted to say thanks again as everyone's opinion is appreciated
whether I agree with it or not.
Greg
Sounds like you made a wise choice under the circumstances.
Frenchy
Greg,
Although it would be over an hour drive for you there is an
arcade up here in Prince William County that always has the newest
Stern pin. They've had everyone since TSPP (that's when I first found
them). It's Planet Fun in the Potomac Mills Mall. Just take I-95 North
to Exit 158B (Prince William Parkway). Make a left at the TGIF & the
mall is at the end of the road. They have a Family Guy now.
-Paul-
Thanks Paul thats good to know. I have also heard that Ray at Golden Coin
in Fredericksburg, VA usually gets the new stern titles to put on route
sometimes. Probably a good move to head up your way with the wife and kids
one day to go check it out. Maybe I can get lucky when Spidey comes out
that they have a POTC and maybe a FG too (although FG will never make it in
this house)

FWIW, I agree with the way you went too. I've played Spiderman on
test -- it's an awesome game but I think having three great choices
versus one brand new great choice is better. Besides, in a year or
two, you might be able to sell/trade two of the three for a HUO Spidey
+ cash. Then you've played a few classics for a while and still get a
Spidey. I have bought only one NIB pin (POTC) and while I love the
game and will keep it -- in hindsight a HUO for 700 to 800 less
wouldn't have been such a bad thing. Enjoy your new games.
I'll have to check out Planet Fun to see what games they have. If
anyone knows of any other place please let me know.
