I have a Frank which has the problem with the DMD blacking out from
time to time. I have a tech coming over to work on it but he doens't
have experience with this oversize DMD in particular. I think that
the group has more experience with this topic and was wondering if you
can give me some pointers so I can point him in the right direction
and save him the time in tinkering around with parts of the game that
don't need it.
What are likely causes?
5 volt supply?
We were looking at the game today and there is no connector on the
back of the DMD, just wires soldered directly to the pins. This is
where we will start, but assuming that power is good through that hack
where would the next areas be to check?
Thank you to any of you who can advise.

Same as any DMD. Make sure connectors are on tight. Check pins on the DMD
for the big connector for broken solder joints. Then check voltages on the
big connector to the DMD. LTG :)

If you can observe the failure, measure the high voltages while the display
is blanked out and see if one of your HV supplies is dropping out.

It needs a fat and rock solid +5 volts or it will reboot. If the service
bulletin sb106 doesn't fix it you'll need to look at the power section
of your board and see if it's not maintaining the 5 volts.

I had the same problem and added the harness. I have not had a single
problem since then and it's been over a year now.

Did the fix from marvin3m repair site, and it hasn't rebooted/blanked
out since.

it was measuring slim and dainty 4.95 volts. is that skinny enough to
cause it to blank?

Possibly so.

Yes, any drop below 4.99V is enough to give the DMD problems
