I thought that was strange, but I just hit the start button, and started
playing. The next thing I noticed is that this game never ended. I played
through ball 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and finally I decided this was too strange, so I
turned it off and on again. Well, now it comes up with the flippers on even
not in a game, and the player one display just says "2500 3" on it, which I
assume is an error-code. It won't start a game, even with all 3 balls in
the drain, but the flippers still work...
I hit the test switch inside the coin door, and I can get numbers to
increment on the display, but since I don't yet have a manual, I don't
really even know what I'm looking for.
Does anyone know:
1: What may have happened
2: what does "2500 3" mean?
3: Where I can quickly buy or at least view online a manual, or at least a
list of error codes?
Thanks!

What you think is an error code is likely the game coming up in audit mode, and
you are seeing the game # in the player 1 display. Probably when the board
crashed it corruped the CMOS data. Pretty common. Sounds like you need to do
the typical "go-through" of an older machine, i.e. resolder all header pins,
especially the 40-pin connector in between the MPU and the driver board.

Likely "Old Williams Disease". A common malady involving poor electrical
connections between major components. See also "Scanbe" socket exorcisms,
failed Molex connectors, and the dreaded 40-pin interboard connector
problems.

It's the game ID number and ROM revision. The game, on power up, detected
that the battery backed 5101 CMOS RAM contents were invalid. When this
happens, it starts in "diagnostics" mode and waits for you to take care of
the problem. Open the coin door, and flick the power switch off then back
on again. That *should* get it to boot to "game over" mode.

You'll find manuals and schematics available from For Amusement Only, Marco
Specialties, Mayfair Amusements, and / or Pinball Resource. You'll find
these fine businesses listed in the FAQ, available from
http://www.mrpinball.com.
You'll find lots of System 7 repair, troubleshooting, diagnostics, and
advice on Clay's web site (http://www.marvin3m.com). More information,
advice and such on Ray's (http://www.actionpinball.com).

This could be a number of things, really. Most likely is the Scanbe
sockets, especially the one under the 5101 CMOS RAM chip.

Given his description, it sounds like the game "crashed". That will
wipe/corrupt what's stored in CMOS. Personally, I'm betting it still has
Scanbe sockets. If they're not replaced, this will become more of a problem
the longer he has the game.

Inside the coin door are the buttons for the diagnostics. (I assume you
already knew that.) Click the middle toggle button down, press the advance
button a few times, toggle the middle button back up and press the advance
button until you go past the number 50 in the match display. I have to do
this twice. After the second time, the game is ready to play.
That should at least get you back to the point of trying to play the game
and see if it's working.
Good luck.
