What an assortment. MM, RFM, BG, SP, BB, WW, BoP, etc. etc.

Nice score !

If those are headed to the fair you'll have a great Pinball on a Stick this
year.

I doubt whether anyone would drive 650 miles one way without having an
inventory of all 22 machines first. I am curious about where they
were found, though. Gillette, Wyoming? Tulsa, Oklahoma? Kitchener,
Ontario? A 650-mile radius from Minnesota covers a lot of territory!

Of course we had an inventory of the 22 games but the only
descriptions we were given were either working or not. Trust me, the
prices weren't great until they threw in the MM and LOTR.

No sense asking where they came from. They were the last of the pins
the op had.

Why didn't you guys come up to Cando, No. Dak? It's only 400 miles
from the Twin Cities. We were having a big NY Eve party. 60 pins on
free play, FREE BEER, food, housing and no foot tapping code at the
urinal. I've a couple hundred pins I'd like to get rid of, including
a couple Embryons. No MM or new pins, mostly early EE. Last time I
did a warehouse raid I filled a semi, 4 pickups with U-hauls and went
pheasant hunting on the drive over to Plentywood Mont. If I remember
right about 80 pins fill a semi. The owner said he thought he had
several pins in an abandoned building in a just about abandoned town I
could have. They were still there but the dead cat under one of the
pins, Sea Witch or Surf Champ, was almost too much to take.

Keep your eye on the raiding ball, Bad Bob

All I'm going to say is, if you ever buy a pin from an operator, the
first thing you should do is remove the operator's information from
the machine before anyone else gets a chance to take a pic of it. :-)

No need for us to do this cause these were all the pins the op had
left. On a side note, the op told us the best pins in the best
locations were making about $30 a week which means he got all of $15 a
week.

You're not the sharpest knife in the drawer, are you Ben. ;-)

I really have to mention one more thing. This op was the nicest guy
you'd ever want to meet. Not only did Dave and Leo help us for 3
hours on New Years Eve, but when we told them we'd be another 2 hours
and we'd call them to come back and lock up, Leo says don't worry
about it. Here's the light switch, just make sure you turn the lights
out and lock up when you leave!

We also told them we were spending the night in Rapid City (about an
hours drive) so Leo says, why don't you guys take my van instead of
that gas hog of a truck. Just bring it back in the morning.

I'm tellin ya, the farther you get from the big city, the nicer and
more trusting people get.

The op did NOT know the value of the pins. But that was a good thing
and a bad thing. He valued the pins based on how old they were. That
was good for the W/B titles but bad when it came to the newer Sterns.

Would you pay $2450 for a routed Nascar or $1750 for a routed High

I'm sure there were more good finds in the parts room.

Love the shot with the Bone Busters. If you didn't know the topper

No idea why an op would put white rubber on a route game.

Wow! I had to move 20 games 50 miles in a day, but they were mostly
turds.

It was summer in Alabama so we were covered in nasty, sweaty grime.

I can't imagine doing a 650 mile move in blizzard conditions. That had

Good God Bryan, where in Rapid City did you stay? I live there and
although we are a tourist area, I didn't know we had any motels with
rooms like that! :-)

The Ops in the Black Hills are great. Some do know what they have,
but still sell off the games at reasonable prices - they aren't out to
screw anybody as long as people don't try to screw them. Most are
small time guys who put pins in tourist traps during the summer months
and are glad to sell them off in the lean winter months when
everything is closed down. I've got screamin' deals on quite a few
games....

Walt, that pic was taken at your lovely Super 8 motel. We were
supposed to stay at the Radisson downtown but I f'ed up the
reservation and they had no rooms left by the time we got there. I
think that was a good thing, because the Radisson looked like the hip
happening place to spend New Years and by midnight, all we wanted was
sleep. :-)

You are right about the op. I think he was more than fair with us
because we were more than fair with him and didn't try and nickle and
dime him.

Yep, looked at all the billboards, east and west, been there, ate
there and have their free bumper sticker on the back door of the
Pinball Palace in Cando, NO. Dak. You have to be from a long way away
not to know where Wall Drug is. The first time I stopped there it
wasn't much more than one building and a water fountain. Now it's an
entire block plus. It's funny seeing all the 'free ice water' signs
in the winter.

Keep your eye on the ice cold wild and windy ball, Bad Bob.

He said he'd list the prices when the games were ready. I'm guessing the
MM went to somebody locally that he knows that isn't a stickler.

We haven't listed any prices or even a list of the pins we got. I
think it's going to be a while before we do. The MM was sold sight
unseen.

We'll be spending the entire weekend getting the games on their legs
and performing triage. Needless to say, we need to find out what
works and what doesn't. And for those that don't work, we need to
determine whether it's in our best interest to fix them before selling
or just sell as is.

There'll be more to come.

Yea, I understand about keeping mum on the price - you can't blame me
for tryin though.

I'm also curious about what problems you run into with machines. I'm
now starting to document what I find and fix -- which is always a lot
more than what I remember after it's all been done.

Well, we finally sold the last game and for anyone interested, I
thought I'd spill the beans, so to speak.

This is a list of the games we paid $19,000 for. Four were pretty
much parts games, six were said to have various board issues and
twelve were said to be in good working condition. Needless to say,
there wasn't a one that didn't have some kind of issue.

MM
LOTR
2-DM
HRC
Elvira
BOP
Starship Troopers
Pool Sharks
Getaway
Nascar
Dr. Who
Monopoly
South Park
DE Simpsons
NBAFB
Leathal Weapon
Dr. Dude
RFM
Big Guns
Bone Busters
Whirlwind

Total sale price on all games came to $33,400. Our expenses were
about $2000 which included rental truck, fuel, hotel, meals and
various game parts. Total profit came to $12,4000.

And before you say, "Holy Shit, I'd do that!", you don't even want to
know how many hours were spent cleaning and fixing games.

Having said that, Brian and I would do it again in a heartbeat. It
was certainly a roadtrip to remember.

BTW HUGE thanks to our buddy Jesse who provided the warehouse space.
We coudn't have done it without him. Now that I think about it, we
could have rented a space for less than what the beer cost us at
Jesse's. ;-)

Thanks so much for sharing the info Bryan!

I totally understand where you're coming from. You all probably spent
countless hours working on the games getting them into some sort of
saleable condition. When all is said and done, if you valued your
time along market values, I bet you almost broke even. But obviously
we don't do it for the money. Congrats on your find!

Thank you for sharing the numbers, finally :) Its a good thing to know
there is profit to be made, but yes I suspect the 100s of hours and
speciality knowledge comes to a 10-15 an hour on average considering all
folks/time/tools/whatever that was involved. Its the journey man, and
to say you have done it, well done and thanks for sharing.

The op was located in Sturgis SD. No need to call around. We bought
the last of their pins.

I'm pretty sure Bryan said he saw a sticker on a pinball machine from
an operating/amusement company on a machine somewhere and called them
about machines for sale and that was the story, yeah that's it.

Previous thread said previous seller had a machine with sticks as you
mentioned. They called, couldn't believe the seller had not removed the
sticker, and many months later the deal was done (4+ weeks of back and
forth chitchat/discussions about pricing). The podcast details were
interesting, recommend the listen (guess which podcast is anyone's
guess, they all sound the same to me now).

A previous buyer of most of their A title games left one of Midwests
stickers on a game they bought.

The Ops in the Black Hills are a funny lot (I'm in Rapid City). Since
tourism is the main staple around here they tend to be reluctant to
sell off the pins since they make money during the summer months
sticking them in campgrounds and such (which often explains why alot
are really beat to hell). But hey, in the winter months times can get
tough.

I was surprised when MWV sold off the first batch of A list games last
fall. I was interested in the Elvira, but selling one pin at a time
wasn't really worth it to them - glad you guys were able to get a good
deal and find homes for all those pins. Had I known they were going
to pull a MM and LOTR out of their ass I would have paid more
attention!! :-)
