Just curious....Does anyone here have their machines set for coin use
or maybe voluntarily use quarters for games? I guess it wouldn't be a
bad way to save a little money : )

Depends on the game. My games that are settable to free play through
switches or options are set to free play. My Mata Hari I rigged the
coin return button with a wire down to the coin acceptor switch. My
Elektra happened to have working coin mechs and is not settable, I could
rig it but I chose just to set it to 12 credits for a quarter and keep
coins around.

I have for a few years. I bought a ton of .984 tokens (mixed variety
from places all over the country) and a token dispenser that doesn't
need cash to use. brings back old arcade memories and the kids love
to drop them into the machines. Whats best is that those Tron tokens
from Disneyland's Flynn's Arcade are the 984 size and I was able to
get a bunch of those.
Only problem is that the Bellagio tokens I got don't work well with
the Happs coin mechs, so I am in the hunt still for a few more .984
Imonex ones....If anyone has a few, let me know :)

On EM's you can always jumper the replay unit for free play, but I
don't. I use nickels, dimes, and quarters just like they did in the
50's. My early '80 Bally's I have to use money since I am too cheap
to buy a chip for free play. I have a McGill 4-barrel coin changer
just like the gas station attendants had when I was a wee lad. I like
recreating the moment. Long live the 50's.

Back when I had four or five games I ran them on coin play. Now that I'm up around 20 (give or take), that's too much work.

I have my POS slot machine for saving quarters. :)
though all of the coin mechs work on my games I have them set to free
play.. If I wanted the true arcade experience I'd drive to one. :)
should I also empty the coin boxes weekly and tally up the totals and
split it with myself? lol jk
Only have one game that still has the coin mechs in it, and that one is
set for free play.
It will take nickels, dimes and quarters, and once in awhile I'll drop
one in for the hell of it. Then I open the door and take it right back
out again.

Yep. Pays for any maintenance the game requires and I need to have a little money on the line or it just doesn't feel the same. Silly, I know but what can I say?

I have 40 games in my basement, and using quarters got old fast. Also
turning off all attract sounds to my games as that also got old very
quickly. I do leave my 12 pinball machines on though as they sound
cool.

Its a FAQ entry at this point, please someone enter it already.
The experience is genuine, part of the history, mystic, and actually fun. It brings some 'value' to the game, having it set on free play is boring and puts not sense of urgency on learning or getting good.
Absolutely, I do! All my machines are on coin play, just like when they
were on a route... back in the day. Gotta have it mean something to win
a game on a special or for reaching the replay score levels. Winning a
free game will mean little or nothing... when all you have to do is
reach down and hit the button again.

I used to do the whole put-the-quarters-in routine 30 years ago when I
started collecting. First game was a dream come true, "I really do
own a living breathing pinball of my very own -sniffle-" so naturally
the early games I always coined. Now my pins still do have working
mechs, but shi* man I have no interest in that kind of detail anymore,
I only care about it playing true to form and looking as decent as
possible. Flick the coin switch a few times and play off the
credits. My Bally slot is another story - must be around 350-400
quarters in there, no option there.
In 1983 I also used to sit in a chair with my chin propped on the
lockdown bar and just stare at each game (especially Xenon) in Game
Over/attract mode for 10-20 minutes at a time, in the dark. The deep
ol' days. : ))

You are just jaded, and living the current 'I'm old as hell and afraid of midlife' experience. You will get over it and move to the next level, likely death. :)

People say they do because it makes the replay mean something. BS.
When you want replays to mean something, support pinball on route.
If you own a game, I don't believe the replay means that much no
matter what.
I figure with the 1up and my local bar, I am close to 400 plays so far
this year on quarter play. Getting a replay or wizard mode on a route
beater really does mean something.
Now I do have mine set to quarter play but I have a giant bucket of
quarters so it doesn't mean anything.

On a good night I might make 5-10 bucks off of the family and
friends :).
No, the the mechs are still there and the doors are unlocked, I just
open the door and flick the little micro switch a few times. I try to
keep a bunch of credits on the wheels for anyone who does not know how
to do this.
But, on the first machine I've owned many, many years ago, I got wise.
I had it set up and mom and pop's dinning room when I was living at
home. I would come home from work each day and my sister would have
all her friends over playing my machine. This kinda pissed me off so I
would lock the door and would get a few quarters for the upkeep of the
machine, I felt bad after a few days and just left the door unlocked.
Now I could give a shit, play them until the machines starts
smoking...gives me something to fix :).

Please explain how leaving them on sounds cool with attract sounds turned off.
