Coconut Island is pretty much there! The software is working very
well, and were it not for the fact that both nuggy and I cannot play a
single good ball with the camera on, we might have been able to
provide some decent video! Talk about performance anxiety!

As it is, I've strung some clips together, which you can find at

http://www.users.on.net/~spaners/Coconut%20Island/index.html

Just click on the Construction tab and go to the Update 2 May 2008
page.

As always, comments and criticisms welcome!

Next - Artwork! :)

Terrific job guys!! Great to see somebody in Oz knows how to make a
pinball machine!!

Are you going to have some lighted inserts with the artwork? I would
be interested to hear how you plan to do the playfield artwork - my
attempts have been with color transparency prints over painted white
wood, but it's hard to get truly big sheets economically and it's hard
to stitch together small sheets.

Looking forward to the next chapter!

Thanks for the comments guys.

Yes, there certainly will be lighted inserts. Nuggy is working on a
CNC router and the artwork itself. For this game, it will be hand-
painted artwork, cleared.

Cheers,
Nick

Nick, some close up video of the back part of the game in play would
be appreciated. It looks like you’ve got some cool things happening
back there.

Well, Nuggy and Company : )
(Sorry Nick, I just can't pass that one up)

I had fun just watching the YouTube video. I can only imagine what a
rush it would be to play it... and then thinking about what an
experience it'll be once the scoring, graphics, art and feature lamps
are put into. Be careful, you may have quite a hit on your hands here.

Nuggy, what's the angle of the playfield? Looks steep, although not a
challenge for the flippers.

Like Kim, I'd like to see some detail shots of the upper playfield.
Seems like there's a lot going on up there to enjoy too.

I know the budget is small so I went ahead and designed a custom
backglass for you as my small contribution to this project.

I'm impressed.
At first I kind of shrugged of your very first posting about the
attempt to build a game from scratch..
After some time and not giving up, you two actually have a working
game in the wings.
Now I wait anxiously for updates.
Well done, guys. Keep us posted.

Thanks Cliffy - wow - our first order!! :)

Seriously, I can make this comment because the layout is 90% nuggy.
The game is actually amazing to play! I am really pushing on the final
playfield (art and clear), because the ball retardation on the ply is
hideous, and even then it plays really well. Some of the shots
(particularly the upper, very steep ramp) will be that much easier to
make.

Another thought (to avoid the work of painting and clearing on this
test field, it will be replaced with a new one on better ply later
which will get the art and clear), what do people think of just
mylaring the existing field - would this get the play closer to a
cleared field?

Why not just clear it?

Vegemite Nick

Need to strip the field, clear and repopulate. Given the drying time,
and the fact this is the test one on cheap ply and the final will be
better grade, doesn't seem worth the work. I was thinking that the
mylar can be added to the bulk of the field without tearing it down
altogether, and playable right away.

Will mylar stick to unfinished ply?

Wow, i have to admit guys that is freakin cool. AND the gameplay,
shots and flow are awesome too.
You just need a professional illustrator to finish it off with amazing
artwork.

I wouldn't trust the mylar sticking over the long haul, Nick, but for
your prototype, I would think it would work out fine. I also don't
think it'll be the same as a freshly cleared surface, but WAY better
than plywood.

Who do you have doing the artwork and are you doing the cabinet along
with the playfield? Not being much of a player, I'm more concerned
about what it's going to look like. Can't wait to see it. I've
thought all along, Coconut Island was a great theme. :-)

Thanks for that Bryan, I think you're right about the mylar, a good
short term solution to get the play testing closer to a finished
field.

Nuggy is quite the artist, which is rather amazing given he also has
the technical prowess. An unusual combination I think. My sister is an
accomplished fine artist, and might get co opted for the translite,
not sure yet (up to nuggy). She's definately been roped in for the
next game, which is my choice of theme (and well along in the planning
side). But as with CI, we need to get the layout right before the
artwork as it influences lamp and graphic placement.

It is a great theme - took me a while to warm to it, but nuggy's
unshaking enthusiasm for it coupled with what he's actually done to
bring it to life it pretty inspiring! Now I love the theme, and can't
wait myself to see the artwork. Just got a text message that he's made
some changes to the ramp entry that has improved the shot quite a bit,
as well as redesigning the "S bend" that leads to the toilet (quite
aptly! :)

Nick

For some reason I picture a monkey up in a coconut tree, tossing
coconuts at the tourists down below while they run for safety.

Maybe a "coconut frenzy" video mode. Catch so many coconuts and the
monkey falls out of the tree and you win. If you get hit by so many,
you die and lose. ;-)

Hey! I better get at least 2 cents royalties when you sell one to
Cliffy.

Nick, my opinion on mylar. Yes. It would be sad not to have art, but
I can't see investing that amount of time on a disposable whitewood
playfield.

IMHO, the finish should be as close to "production" as possible, as
this will dramatically affect the dynamics of play.

hey guys thanks for the kind words, now Artwork.
the intention is to block color the playfield where all the ball
trails lead and then using a selection of paint sharpies, do the
artwork by hand. naturally all inserts will be present, im assuming
the first coat is an undercoat/primer and then sand to reveal flat
inserts. The other block colors are applied to ball trail areas and
then the free hand stuff, all given a quick sand then ill have a go a
clearcoating the sucker.
i got some polyurethane floor clear thats called "diamond tough" !!!
so im thinking this is a sign! ill thin it with thinners for spraying,
product label indicates this is possible.

question: how much do you usually thin something like this?

will knock up a closet style paintbooth and when the better half is
not around, we'll hit it!

other questions are types of paint, i know shit all about
compositions, think paint pens are enamel, am double checking this
later tonight.
Any handy easy for the novice paint boy information will be graciously
accepted.
the plastics artwork will be via the usual laser printed vinyl decal
inverted so as to be on the bottom of the plastic, then some primer
underneath for good luminence.

side art is unknown how to do yet, was thinking generic" NPC
development system", (red on black)but is boring!

translite is of same dimensions as WPC, and effectively the same style
mounting arrangement. i have actually drawn something i like, this
will be shown very shortly for critical comment, etc.

Regards and stay tuned
