My 14 y.o. son wants to see a concert (I'll go too) at the NJ
Meadowlands within the next 3 weeks, he has only ONE choice of which
concert to go to, TOOL or IRON MAIDEN. Has anyone seen these current
tours and what did you think? We both like both bands and I am sure
either band will give a great show. I know there are some metal heads
reading RGP. Any replies will be helpful.

Maiden all the way. Tool is alright but Dickenson can put on one
helluva show, and Maiden has better music overall anyway.

i'd have to say tool. but the tool concert may get a lot more out of
control than iron maiden.

Wow, are you the best dad ever?

I've seen Tool three times. Each time they put on a great show, they
sound great and are thoroughly worth the price of the ticket. None of
the tool shows i've been to have gotten out of hand. Half of their
songs are a little more mellow then the average metal concert goer is
used to. If tool ends up coming to western NY on the last leg of their
tour, I'll buy tickets in a heartbeat.

So, My vote is for tool.

BTW, have you listened to them at all?

Tool just played 2 dates at the Staples Center here (well, in LA, but
it's only 1 hr away) and the consensus was...a slightly kinder, gentler
Tool, with MJK actually acknowledging the crowd rather than singing
with his back to them, as he has been known to do. I'm biased toward
Tool, if I had to make the choice, but i really haven't been into them
for quite a while now. If you've never seen them live, then definitely
go - the last time I saw them live was about ten years ago at a little
tiny theatre in Fresno, and, other than the fact that I practically had
to fight for my life to hold my spot near the stage, it was an
incredible show. You just get tired of getting boots to the head from
crowd surfers though. Not that you will have to worry about that at the
meadowlands though, unless you are in gen. adm. near the stage. I
haven't heard anything re: Maiden's tour though, so I can't vouch for
them. I know I'm getting old now, though - I'm going to the Hollywood
Bowl next week to see Roger Waters play DSOTM, and then I'm catching
Devo at the end of October. It'll be nothing but fat old guys on stage
for me next month, but fat old guys who know how to rock.

IRON MAIDEN put on an AWSOME Show. I haven't seen this Tour yet but
I'll be in the PIT on October 7th. in Camden NJ. Those guys still KICK
ASS! I saw Tool many years ago and while they are a great band, I'd
highly reccomend IM as it will be a much more entertaining show.

Iron Maiden while they still rock.

When he gets older, he can see the Tool last reunion tour.

No contest.
Maiden! Maiden! Maiden!

Their new album is just incredible and will likely take metal album of the
year.
Last week it was #9 on the US charts and #1 in 9 other countries.

If you've never seen Maiden live you HAVE to go. I saw them on the
somehwere in time tour, seventh son tour and brave new world. drove to
chicago to see them, too - 6 hours drive - course Dio was opening so it was
a spiritual event for me.
LOL

My vote counts as 10 for Maiden! :)

Oh ya, in slightly OT news, Derek Riggs is releasing his new artwork
book of his artwork he has done over the years for Iron Maiden, other
bands, and his own personal creations.

WRONG! It's still 4-3 for Tool. And counting. Of course, Tool fans are
less likely to post on here regarding their preference - they tend to
be more subtle than Maiden fans. Who have the subtlelty of a Mack
truck, for the most part. I mean, those shirts! Gawdalmighty! For sheer
musicality, you aren't going to beat Tool. Just take a look online at
who is generally considered the top drummer in the genre now - Danny
Carey. And the whole band is just insanely talented. Not to denigrate
Maiden - there are some good musicians there too, but not quite the
level of Tool.

Too bad you can't go to both. But my vote is for TOOL. I've been a fan
of Maiden since 1982 and have seen them several times. The new album
(and last one) is just okay in my opinion. They were a band known for
endless touring and yet for some reason they are only playing 8 shows
in the states! Doesn't make sense. They've sold out a long time ago. A
few years back they said they would still make albums, but cut back on
touring and concentrate on the European Summer Festivals. Guess they'd
rather cash one big paycheck than tour the world at smaller venues.
Very disappointing as a long time fan. Besides, after playing a few new
songs, they play the same greatest hits in almost the same order every
tour since 'Fear of the Dark'. Last time I saw Maiden was in 2003. They
only played 85 minutes of which at least 10 minutes was B. Dickinson
ranting to the audience. That time could have been used to play 2 more
songs! Okay, onto Tool. Saw them back in June. Great show (my 3rd time
seeing them). My only complaint was I wish they played longer. They
have some really great songs that I'd like to hear live. Asside from
playing the new material, they fell into a greatest hits set as well.
It's really too bad these bands do that. Deep Purple is another of my
faves (yes they are still around) and the second half of their show has
been the same for a few years now. What it should come down to is which
band do you like better at this moment. If you want to see Bruce
Dickinson run around the stage waving a British flag and slagging Ozzy
Osbourne (Black Sabbath is king) then go. But if you want great
visuals, an amazing drummer (sorry Neil Peart, Mike Portnoy) I'd put my
money on Tool. Maynard is just getting better as a vocalist. Whew, are
you still with me? Obviously I am reccomending Tool. If Maiden were
touring the Bay Area I would go to that, but they aren't. The fact that
Maiden is playing your city is a good reason to go to that show as Tool
usually sweeps back and forth accross the states several times. At
least that's what they did on the Lateralus tour and from what I've
heard they've been telling audiences they'll be back. Let us know what
you decide!

Summary:
If you are a drummer :TOOL
If you are a bassist: Maiden (Steve Harris is the man, but Justin IS
Good)
If you are a guitarist: Probably Tool...Maiden forgot how to invent
riffs. Anyone remember Charlotte the Harlott? Besides, they have 3
guitarists and had to cancel a few shows when one (1) of them broke a
finger??
If you are a singer: TOOL without a doubt. Maynard doesn't talk much,
but man that boy can sing.

Enjoy!

I like both bands so I won't comment on which to see, but if you go see
tool do NOT get floor seats. I saw them last week, paid more to get
the best seats I could which were about halfway back on the floor, only
to find out that you can't see a VERY major part of the stage show from
the floor. The whole floor of the stage is a giant video screen, which
can't be seen from floor seats.

For myself I would easily vote for Tool, since I like that band much
more than Maiden. I've seen both bands live (Tool this year, Maiden
aaages ago) and Maiden have a bigger show I guess, Tool a more intense
performance.

If you like both bands equally (even though they're so different) it's
a hard decision. But you still have to choose for Tool :)

For me, the choice isn't even close. Pick Tool. Really depends on
which music your son likes better.

Iron Maiden. I saw those guys last year and they were absolutely incredible.
(and I've seen them at least a dozen times since they first came out.)

Iron Maiden is rock legend, Tool will be in the "where are they now" bin in
a few years.

I'd consider Iron Maiden to be in that bin since about '93. Strangely
that's one year after Tool came out with their first EP.

Which does your son like better? Surely he has a preference.

My vote is for Tool. Saw them around 1995 when their show and
equipment was very small, they were playing in a little, very old ice
arena with plywood thrown over the ice to make the floor. The
location, size, and production was a notch above playing in a bar.
However, their performance was incredible! I've seen them 3 times
since then, the last time for lateralus, which I liked the least
because Maynard basically ignored the audience, also I hadn't listened
to the new album enough and they didn't play enough of my choice
favorite (older) songs. I guess that's inevitable when you are
promoting a new album. I'm glad I got to see them when EVERY song they
played was a favorite song.

The good ones.

FWIW: Iron Maiden likely had more than 24 band members since they were
established in the early seventies.
