Have a Gottlieb Slick Chick that was working fine for a few weeks
(except for the singles 9 point switch which I don't think has
anything to do with this problem) and then, suddenly after a game
ended, coin door start button no longer registered. Backglass has
game ended light and match number lit, but no reaction when start
button is pressed. I checked the score motor via manually turning it
and it did the turn to the next position fine. I also manually
activated the coil that is attached to the armature that goes under
the start relay bank and this caused the game to do a partial restart
where it allowed for the play of the game including releasing balls
and resetting score reels to zero. However, while the game played
properly, it started as if Slick Chick had already been completed five
times (all rollunders lit, slings 10 points lit, special hole lit
etc.). I assume this is a problem with the start bank relay, but any
guidance would be helpful as this is my first 60's EM.

Thanks, in advance for you help.

Are there credits on the game?

Try putting a dime or quarter through the coin slot to start a game.
Or trip the coin insert switch manually. If this works the problem is
in the circuit that allows the start button to start a game.

Might inspect the credit reel switch that tells if there are credits
on the game. This should be forced closed all the time to make the
game free play.

Check the switch stack that is actuated by the ball gate shutter. There
is a switch on that stack that must be closed in order for the credit
button to be enabled. Sometimes these switches get bent out of shape
when raising or lowering the PF, as they are in a rather precarious
spot.

Good luck! - TimMe (CARGPB3)

Assuming the credit wheel is on zero - if you manually add a game to the
wheel, then will the credit button work?

For free play, typically a switch on the credit wheel is forced to be
closed all the time, or jumpered with a wire to simulate being closed
all the time. This allows the machine to always believe there are
credits.

So - if adding a credit manually allows it to work, then the free play
setup isn't working. As mentioned, if that's the case, a coin switch
will start a game.

The credit wheel had several games on it, so not the credit wheel.
Also, I checked the switches and the middle switch is set closed, so
it is set for free play. In fact, we had been playing it for free
with the credit wheel on zero for some time before the coin door
stopped registering. There is also no problem with the coin door
switch.

I'm assuming it has something to do with the whole start relay bank,
but not sure where to begin with that.

Did you check the switch stack on the ball gate like I suggested?

Sorry, I missed your message amongst the others. I will check the
switch stack on the ball gate and let everyone know if that was the
problem.

Thanks.

Timme,

Thanks for reminding me to check the switch stack. The problem was
actually a combination of two separate issues.

(1) there was a wire that was loose and needed to be resoldered in the
start relay bank mechanism, and
(2) as you diagnosed, the switch stack needed to be adjusted.

I also had a problem with the single digit score reel with the 9's
position switch. Replaced that switch and now Slick Chick is working
100%.

Thanks, again.
