FYI... saw the following press release today:
http://www.marketwatch.com/story/jersey-jack-pinball-inc-and-dynamics-inc-unveil-exclusive-pinball-experiencetm-application-for-eplatetm-payment-devices-2012-04-19

I know I'm just getting dumber, but I have no idea what a "Pinball
Experience" is. It says there will be a future announce explaining what
ePlate(TM) payment device is.

Jack eluded to this at MPE. The coin slot is outdated and he wants to
make it easier for the operators to collect revenue. Makes sense.

Common sense says use the smart phone technology.

"Pinball...yeah, there's an app for that".

Paper money is going soon......Coins are already gone.

How else to get money into games - that's the future - not my idea -
just what is happening.

Better idea - to deny there is change, progress or something
else....uhhhh....sorry, that was already done too.

Sounds like in-app purchases are coming to pinball. Want an extra game
or ball? Swipe your card. Want 'premium' graphics to come up on the Oz
LCD? Swipe a card.. Like in-app purchases on an iphone.

I believe, for me, a true 'pinball experience' involves Brian Kelly on
some level and beer.

With disorganized parts carts...

And sometimes electric seat warmers and the stories that follow...

Oh...and Mr. Sodapop at a pinball show!!! That's good too...

Yea, but that's not what this sounds like. The vending machines in our
office support payment via credit/debit card. This sounds more like
something else...

It's a special credit card with buttons on it, so you can make
selections for what you want to pay for, or something to that effect.

Kids also rarely play pinball. And when they do, they'll be with a

Yeah. I posted before I read the link

Not what I was expecting. With so many apps now for smart phones I was
surprised they are going this route. So, I would have to aquire then use
a credit card with buttons on it (that really stock piles purchasing
data for the banks to sell to marketing firms) in an effort to win a
free pinball machine?

No thanks. When Jack talked about making it easier to put money into a
pinball/vending maching wasn't expecting this.

How many people have this new credit card and how many have smart phones
with payment apps? They could have still tied in a giveaway promotion
through smart payments. Just sayin'.

Ok, I looked it up.

Basically, the eplate is a credit card with 2 buttons.

You download an ap onto your phone, which associates what you want the 2
buttons to represent.

So say you have a visa card that gives you frequent flyer miles, and
then you have a different visa that gives you 2% back or whatever.

You can download different 'experiences' onto your ap, and associate
whatever ones you want with the two buttons. Then when you go buy
lunch, you press either button 1 or button 2, to apply the points you
earn to whatever ap you have set up for button1 or button2.

(Personally, I don't use credit cards and loathe cash back/etc.
gimmicks, so this is all useless to me)

The means to pay for stuff on a pinball machine is one thing ('eplate',
plastic, etc). What you will be buying at a pinball machine is another.
With an LCD in that Oz game (plus an internet connection), the sky's the
limit. They could display different 'apps' on that screen like the
latest TVs. Or your card could identify you to realtime pinball
tournaments - want to join one? pony up $5 bucks off your device. How
about show a cartoon in the corner of the screen to amuse your little
ones, while you play a game? :)

Any apps/information/etc. added would have to be run by the license
holder and would have to fit with what they deem appropriate for the woz
universe (in this case). In addition, I see added fees for the few
operators out there :(

Until something like google wallet relly takes off I don't see this
going very far.

Wow. I've never heard of a cash only bar. I go out downtown in Orlando
(not the tourist area) with the young guys I work with. NONE of them
carry cash. Seriously, five guys would have a hard time scraping up $20
cash between them on any given night. All of them make at least $80K a
year too. If we are hopping, one guy buys each round on his card. If
we are staying for a while, each opens a tab on their card.

Personally I think pinballs on location should have dollar bill readers
and credit card slots. Use a menu to choose how much to charge to the
card. Unfortunately it would have to be connected to the phone or
internet...

I use my credit card in vending machines for a soda, why not a pinball
machine?

Make it easy for a new generation to do business, and allow businesses
to scrap/worm/troll for data on buying, and what do you have? Perfect
environment for them to sell data to the governments which can't or
don't have the ability to do this themselves. All paid for with tax
dollars. Its like paying to have someone spy on you... Oh wait, it
isn't like it at all, that is exactly what it is.

Nice, clear description highlighting the user benefits. I like it.

Whoever wrote that first Dynamics, Inc. press release should read-and-learn
from your description. I read the official announcement twice and was left
with a "huh?". I was guessing that "ePlate" = credit card and "Experience"
= reward, but when you are unknown you can't start with your own vocabulary.
That is, it's your user base that gets to decide when you Google something
instead of Google search something. Who knows, maybe they'll be successful,
but the road to success is littered with things like Martinizing and Bing.

The register doesn't matter. In the Bar business the IRS looks at how
much product you purchased. They know about how much cash flow you
should have from that a lone. In College I ran a bar for 3 years. I
don't know one owner that ever claimed pool tables or vending
revenue!! Pinball on location is a dead business!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At this point I don't see the value of replacing one form of payment that nobody
uses (cash) with another form of payment that nobody uses (this non-credit card).

Now if they're talking about putting a mag stripe reader on a game, hell yeah! Or
talking about a micropayment system linked to a smart phone, hell yeah again!

...but this? I just don't get it.

The press release and lingo are confusing, but it *is* a branded credit
card. So it seems that there will be a mag stripe reader on the games. I
imagine you could pay with any credit/debit card as well, but using this
(effectively a JJP rewards card) gives you a chance to get merchandise
or win a WOZ.

Pinball on location was a dead business.

Bar owners can buy booze by cash as in from a liquor store and even
pay retail and sales tax and still make a killing. Many of them do
just that.

This means that there is a mag stripe reader - that how this card works as well. Functions on an existing infostructure and is an "enhancement".

By the way, that also there is a new scam attached to that as well. People taken a photograph of your barcode while it's being scanned at starbucks. Then the use this photo version to purchase their own drinks and it charges your account.

Exactly Jack. Many a bar owner in the states surrounding Illinois
would go or have friends & family bring back booze when they took road
trips to visit there. Cash is king. I always thought a couple dozen
Fifths were considered "for reasonable, personal consumption". Just
like the North Carolina 299 cartons of cigarette rule.

Casinos have an ulterior motive for having non-traditional cards;
they're paying you back in money, and they'd love you to spend any money
you make back into their machines. Pinball doesn't have such issues.
Maybe would have been more useful back in the day when an area had
numerous competing arcades. (like the boardwalks of old)
