The planet and rings stopped moving on a friends JD, a day after he
bought it. I took a look and the gearbox is open on one end and with the
playfield in the vertical position, you can see straight down into it.
About half way down I could a shaft with 2 large gears but only 1 was
turning.

I found that with a stubby flathead you can loosen the 2 screws that go
through the Gearbox (Gbox) and holds the motor in place. Then on the
other end is a bracket over the main planet shaft that comes through the
bottom of the Gbox. Remove a cotter pin at the bottom and 2 screws
holding it onto the Gbox, also 2 hex head set screws on a collar further
up the shaft between this bracket and gbox. The bracket and collar will
slide down off the shaft. Then drill out the heads of 2 rivets that
hold the sides of the gbox case together, the metal is soft and not too
hard to do. Now you can separate the bottom of the case and slide it
down and off the shaft out of the way.

Now inside the gbox you can clearly see and access the troubled gear
shaft. It has a gear then a pressed collar then the gear that runs the
globe and another pressed collar. If you get and small long socket and
slide it onto the end of the shaft pressing up against the collar and
give it a good hit with a small hammer the 2 collars will press against
the gear and it will grip again. As a extra measure I got a 1/16 X
inch long rolled pressure pin, drilled a 1/16 inch hold through both
gears and hammered the pin into them both and clipped off the small
excess. Then regressed the ends of all the gear shafts and slid the case
back together. On the opposite end of the motor on the case is an unused
hole I put a long screw with a lock head nut to hold that side of the
case together. Then reversed the process to reassemble the rest. The
motor bolts hold the other end of the case together. I left the old
rivet pins in since removing them would require much more disassembly.

It runs smooth and quite. And the position its in with the playfield up
is very accessible. Didnt cause back pain like working under there
sometimes does. The whole job took less then an hour and did it right on
the machine

I understand a rebuild is close to $200 and you have to dissemble and
ship and wait. This cost 30 cents for 2 roll pressure pins at home depot
and an hour and some grease on my hands.

Hope it helps someone else.
