I am only using Duracell or Energizer batteries for my AA pins. I
change them on even years on my birthday (this December). I also change
them on any new (used) machines that arrive with AAs.

Home Depot currently has 36 packs of Energizer MAX Alkaline AA Batteries
for $14.98 plus tax. When I added our local 8.25% tax the price becomes
$16.22. That puts the unit cost at 45 cents each or $1.40 per machine
which is good cheap insurance against leakage.

I like the fact that that I can see the expiration dates at Home Depot
and they will be in sealed packs.

I use 90 AA batteries every two years to keep my pins up to date.

Has anybody found any better deals?

I can't remember off hand how much I pay at Costco but they have exp
dates and seem to last a pretty long time. Might want to check there.

Watch for sales.
They can usually be had for about 20 cents a piece.
I bought a bunch before Halloween for some animated
decorations at Menards for that price.

Kirkland Signature (Costco) AA are up to $11.99 for a 48 pack everyday. However, membership is required. Ask a friend to get them if you're not a member. All of this assumes you reside near a Costco location. Sam's Club offers a similar deal but I aviod all Wal-Mart purchases and Sam's is too closely related.

I learned the hard way and now join the consens of other RGP members:
I won't use Energizer batteries; they leak.

I have had Duracells leak which is why I was looking for Energizer. So
what do you use? Rayovac which can be found for less or just cheap
store brand batteries which are about 20 cents each?

I don't know that there's much consensus there... I use energizers, have for years,
still do.

Haha, i think all batteries have the potential to leak. Funny reading
this thread, someone saying duracells leak, so they want Energizer.
Someone else saying Energizers leak so they want something else. Just
because one out of 500 batteries you bought leaked doesn't mean you need
to swear off the whole brand :)

They all leak.

They'll work even when they're leaking. Pull 'em still working, and leaking, out of clocks all the time.

Has anyone tried lithium-ion batteries? supposedly last up to 10 years. I was going to try them in my smoke detectors and pins.

Yup, the could still leak and work. That's why the best thing to do is
install remote battery holders and do a visual inspection once a year.
They all have the potential to leak doesn't matter the brand!

I picked up some 36 packs of Energizers today at Home Depot. The expire
date is 2023.

They also had 48 packs of Ray-O-Vac for less with expire dates of 2017.

So it looks like Energizers are rated 10 years and Ray-O-Vac 5 years
for freshness.

I'll let you know in 2 years if any had leaked.

They all leak. Energizer, Duracell, Kirkland, Ray-O-Vac. Don't be
fooled - they ALL leak.

IMHO - You'd be wise to upgrade to remote AA battery packs, button-
cell batteries or memory capacitors.

There are also some really nice "memory modules" that can replace the
5101 and don't require any batteries at all. This is a much better
way to go then worrying about leaking batteries every two years...

I just recently purchased these:

http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=256876

They replace 5101's, 6501's and 2101's and work without batteries.

If you replace them every one or two years and you use fresh batteries,
they will not leak. If you leave them in there for years they will
leak. I use the Member's Mark brand from Sam's Club. My brother swears
by the Kirkland batteries from Costco but we don't have one in these
here parts.
BTW, what are you supposed to do with the old batteries. I have been
just tossing them in the trash but I have a suspicion that probably is
not the best thing. Do county hazardous waste collectors take them and
what do they do with them? I know. Check my local area. Just thinking
out loud.

I take all the lithium, NiCad, and NiMH batteries to Batteries Plus for
recycling. Every time, they ask me if any alkaline batteries are in the
lot. AFAIK, alkaline batteries are not recyclable.

PS They all leak. The most impressive batteries I've ever seen were in
a Black Knight I worked on around last Xmas. The game had Energizers,
like these -
http://www.coloribus.com/focus/selected-best-batteries-ads/9049955/
installed in it. None of the 3 leaked, and these batteries have to be
from the lat 80's / early 90's.

I read somewhere that it is ok to throw non-rechargeable batteries (alkaline batteries, etc) in your normal trash, since they don't contain significant amounts of mercury.

True, but if everyone throws them out well then.....
