Seller states it can still be used to produce thousands of flawless
parts.

Most likely true--but not without a licensing agreement I'd imagine:

That is Pinball Inc. selling them, so they are legit.

James must have the molds for the handles too!
What I don't understand is WHY ISN'T HE RUNNING MORE OF THESE instead
of selling them?? Pinballinc has everything needed to put these
molds into operation- including the license!
Makes NO SENSE. A crying shame.
I know a certain German company that will jump on these.
If the handles were available too- the full set (with license) would
be worth buying.

Geez.....

If you sit and think about making parts it doesn't make any sense!
Sure they sell for $500 when you can't find them. Once you make 300 no
one will pay more than $75. Ask Steve Young about parts people they
said they had to have. Once they were made people didn't buy. If you
have the tooling you have the "Rights". The key is having the tooling.
So the molds for the handle would have to be made, got $7000? That's
what it would take for good tooling that would last 1000+ runs. You
want just 200 run? $4K for the handles. You'll never get your money
back and James knows it. E

I remember a couple of days ago someone said that BAA has the molds
and plans to make them. Now how is this?

That should read if you have the tooling you also need the rights. Having
the tooling does not allow you to make anything unless you either have the
rights or have approval from someone who has the rights.

Most parts for machinery are not copyrighted thus no license are
required at all to manufacture and sell (unless of course they are
patented).

As for original tooling, you may want to check the case history of
companies who sell tooling used specifically for the purpose of
manufacturing a copyright parts. Mainly when the company sells the
tooling with pre-knowledge that the tooling is being purchased for the
specific purpose of manufacturing parts.

Why did you decide to sell these vs running a small run?

We've been working on way too many projects lately (if you're
attending the Midwest Gaming Classic you'll get to see some of the
stuff we've been doing) and wouldn't have time to run them for a
while.

It would be really bad if it will end up in a collector's box rather
than someone who would use them for production

It's always exciting to see what you're working on, James, and I'll be
there next weekend to visit. Most of us only want you to reproduce
what it is that we need at the time, not what the masses may need or
what may actually be making you enough money to continue.

Hopefully, someone who wants to make these parts, and has the time,
ends up buying these molds. But they could also end up with a
collector who'll do nothing with them and that would be a shame.

BTW We could still really use that center ramp for AFM. :-)

The handles are a different type mold, an injection mold. Quite
different than a thermoforming mold and a different manufacturing
process.

This would certainly fall under a gray area of copyright law and it's
not a slam dunk either way, one only needs to look at the automotive
world for many examples of this. This mold creates something that is
both functional AND something that is artwork at the same time so it's
something that is clear cut. It's certainly an interesting topic and I
would be curious to what would happen. (We will find out within the
next 30 years, as 3D printers take the world by storm!)

The gun handles are another story, since they are completely non
functional and I would be surprised if some could reproduce these
legally.

Of course, IANAL, but following copyright issues is a hobby of mine
and I have seen this pop up in the car collector market for years.

Yeah I just asked on the group yesterday why they weren't making the
AFM Center Ramp. I'm guessing they are busy with other stuff. Glad
it's a possibility in the future.

Copyright was for artwork (drawings) and not 3D objects, no ?

How is this different from the repro whitewater boulders we saw years
ago ?
As far as I remember, these mountains were reproduced without any
problem, but not the little bigfoot cave sign because that part is
protected by copyright ?

Can someone make a part, but not sell the part, nor give the part

yes you can always make parts for your own use..
that's what I intend to do now :-)
