Note that I had to 'scrub' the pictures of any references to the test
location after the bruhaha over the POTC pictures. So that's why some
have some things matted out.
Note, too, that I'm thinking about hanging it up as far as test game
photographer / spy is concerned. Haven't made a decision one way or
another yet, but I've done it for three years straight now. Been there,
done that. Then again, I might pull a Bret Favre and have one more in

Mmmm, that's basically it, a target in the middle of the playfield. Might
be a good place to apply mylar for home use. (Just like over a drop
target!)

This particular location had a ton of kids coming up to the game, looking
at it, and even drawn enough to the license that they wanted to play as a
fourth.
And, of course, the obligatory "MY FAVORITE FAMILY GUY CHARACTER IS
(character) BECAUSE HE (whatever)". Hey, they're kids. :)

Nope. I expected that as well, but it was not to be.
Korn, thanks for the pictures and descriptions!
Understanding that I fully understand that the game is very beta-ish right now,
does it appear that they are using actual voice actors from the show for the
sound calls, or sound-a-likes like POTC used? Not that POTC was a bad
experience, but one of the reasons I really like my TSPP is the actual voice
calls from the real people. :-)
TIA.

Since the rules are really changing (Stewie playfield was conventionally
played in v0.41, and switched to time based in v0.44), I'd say it's
really more an alpha.
> does it appear that they are using actual voice actors from

Everything I heard sounded like it was the original voice actors. Norm's
quotes are just lifted from episodes. Definitely heard speech from
Brian, Peter, Stewie, Chris, and Meg (probably Lois too, but can't
remember FOR SURE at this point) but not familiar *enough* with FG to
know if they're original voice work or lifts from episodes. I *thought*
I heard some original voice work from at least Stewie and Brian.
Does the show have an "evil monkey" song? Because the pin does. :)
WPT was terrible and POTC was mediocre (like every Nordman game)
How does this one compare?

Except this uses a dedicated smaller ball, which you have to keep 100%
contained.
- Dan
I understand that, but I don't think it needs that much plexi to keep it up
there. Maybe they were afraid of errant regular balls finding their way up
there and into the UPF. A nice wireform divider might have looked more
appropriate but I sure don't like the look of "walls of plastic".
Greg
...if Stern guys are reading this - and you didn't know his name -
there it is: Seamus! :)
Greg
I think the Stern's company motto has been "bullet-proof it" lately - just
look at the sneeze guard on POTC, way more plastic than you might imagine is
necessary to do the job. Since it's meant to be a tiny pinball machine I'm
not turned off by the encasing (I mean a real pinball is contained in a box)
but I would have liked to see the "coffin" look more like an actual pinball
cabinet. Maybe some as-yet-to-come stickers will help the effect.
- Dan
Yeah, I saw that - first thought was someone is doing an in-joke with POTC.
However I highly doubt that the playfield screens will be changed; it's
pretty much carved in stone now (I mean they didn't even correct typos from
pre-production STICKERS on Nascar, so a whole playfield has no chance).
- Dan
Also - even as a pinbal fan, I didn't know what a "Scoop" was ...why
not just say "Shoot the Hole" or "Shoot the TV" ?
Greg
Thanks for the info! Now I really can't wait to see/play one...
I hear what you are saying about the new trend of using plexiglass all the way
up to the playfield glass. But I have to say, I've played 2 different POTC
machines on locations recently, and aside from the time I spent studying the
game before I played it, I really did forgot about them once the game was
started. Would it have been a different story if those location games were dirty
and the plexi was tough to see through, sure, but I honestly don't think these
really detract from a game that is being played.
>That upper playfield just looks odd and out of place to me from the pics.

Beats me; outside of making a noise, the target doesn't seem to actually DO
anything right now.

Well, the game itself *does* say shoot the TV.
Pinball folks say that you're shooting a scoop because even if you
haven't seen any pictures, you know *exactly* what to expect... ball goes
in, game does X, then it's going to shoot the ball back out that same
hole.
One of the worst things pinball programmers can do is use pinball lingo
in on screen player directions. (*cough*LOTR*cough*) Regular players
don't know WTF a "vuk" is! Pinball people know, but it doesn't mean
anything to Joe Player, so you might as well write on the screen "grok
the fork! grok the fork!" instead.
(i.e. right there with you when talking to regular players. But in here
is pinball land! :) )
> Korn, would you rate this pin higher than Pirates? Just curious as to

Hard to say. I had a better first impression of Pirates, but Pirates'
software was a lot more finished when I first played it.

Just to remind people, this machine was running really base software, so
that a lot of speech calls weren't in there *I* wouldn't call cause for
alarm at this point. Just hasn't been gotten to at this point.

Mmmmm, I think they were more concerned about the small ball escaping
than the other way around. The little guy goes airborne a lot more often
than I would have expected.
...then again, the same thing happened on the POTC test machine, and they
calmed that wayyyy down by the time they reached production.
I swear we lit that thing five or six times, but could never bring
ourselves to intentionally drain on it to find out what it did! :)

Not true; remember the whole PARLEY/PARLAY thing with POTC?

What's there plays pretty well so far. There is a decent amount of flow,
much more than POTC which I know drove you nuts.
And you know my MO; I don't start talking about "more fun" and "less fun"
until things bake a bit more; that's not fair to Stern.

Fair? Fair?! Life isn't fair! You _should_talk about more fun or less
fun becasue if they are willing to put a game in the public domain then
they better expect people are going to form an opinion on what is
presented warts and all. If they aren't ready for that than they
shouldn't put the game out. I mean how big a deal is it to say "I liked
this" or "I didn't like this", it might even give them ideas for things
to change/add like in WPT. As pinheads we know things might change but
give an opinion on what's presented!
Hell, this time you didn't even get a scoop! We had pics and
descriptions of features before you even found the test game. :)

I'm not saying that *I* am not forming an opinion; of course I am!
But what I am REALLY uncomfortable about is people using my opinion on a
test piece that has flaw X that's already known and already going to be
addressed before production starts as (part of) a basis to purchase / not
purchase a particular title. That's what's not fair to Stern!
Everybody makes mistakes and corrects them; that's why they *do* test
games. Sure enough, the test games have shown problems that they didn't
find in the factory.
So I'm in a catch-22. I like the game, but there are two really bad ball
hangups that are really coloring my impression of the game. Worsening
the catch-22, those ball hangups already have fixes planned. So is it
fair to say, "I like it, but waiting for a ball chase that you're never
going to see on a production game sucks!"?
No, it isn't fair. It isn't indicitive of what people would actually buy
or play.
Furthermore, I haven't had anywhere near the play time I feel necessary
to really form a coherent opinion on the piece. While some people are OK
volunteering a quickie opinion (and I've done that privately, with the
proper caveats), RGP posts have a lot more... permanence.

Well, I've done that privately to Stern Inc on many test machines,
including Family Guy. But until the game is in a more final state, it
doesn't make sense to do it pubically.
The left ramp on Elvis is a perfect example. Early on test, it was
shaped differently. To come on RGP and blast away at it wouldn't have
been fair, because that ramp never saw production. That could have
tainted quite a few folks' opinion, over something they'd *never* lay
hands on. That's not fair.
> Hell, this time you didn't even get a scoop! We had pics and

Yeah, and they were sooo good I couldn't even tell what Brian was
standing on, or that the clam saucer even existed!
Truthfully, I'm surprised as heck I beat ATEI pictures. (Sorry, Martin!

Umm, yeah. Publicly. That's what I genuinely intended to type!
(Though, out of context, it really *doesn't* make sense to do it pubic-ly,
either! :) )
Not yet D. Later this week I will and will give my opinion for what
it's worth. :)
Korn has his reasons for not giving opinions as freely as say, me and I
respect that. I was just giving him a little crap because he's a friend
so nobody go hatin on me. ;) Hopefully the software will be at a good
enough level when I play to form an opinion.

Thanks Korn for the photos
Can you just buy small sheets of mylar to cut yourself? Cuz yeah, I'd

Agreed, it's tough. My original run machine has a little bit of "spreading"
on the sticker's impact zone on the far right edge but still looks perfect
otherwise. I bought spares, but I doubt that I'll need to use 'em any time
soon. Hopefully they use the same material for this.
Is it just me or does the big hole in the playfield around the beer make it
look like it should do SOMETHING - such as rotate, wobble or move up and
down a bit?

That's not a stupid question!
Yes you can buy sheets. You can buy them from pinball suppliers in rolls
large enough to do entire playfield stem to (no pun intended) stern.
Or, if you're resourceful, go to either office max or office depot (can't
remember which; one has it and one doesn't) and buy their "self seal"
plastic with the glue backing. It's the same mylar, except you get 20 or
so 8.5x11's for $15!
My opinion is that mylar on something you're going to be pounding on
deliberately is like a seat belt. If you never really needed it, GREAT!
If you did need it and don't have it, you just boned yourself.
> are there decals on the drops or no?
Drops have F-A-R-T stickers on them.
> I think the dog rotates, big whoop!
Dog pivots back, no rotation; not really anything to write about. I think
I have it on tape. Transfering DV footage to the computer right now, will
sift through it tonight and tomorrow and hopefully have something
watchable.
