Don't bitch and complain if the show was weak due to a lack of pins.
People make deals off these spreadsheets, never unload their trucks,
and just wait to make the trade in the parking lot. If everyone
starts doing that, why bother doing a show?
The show isn't for another 5 months and already you guys a doing a
spreadsheet. If you want to buy or sell something just advertise it
on the forum or sell via the classifieds.

I sold a pin on one of these spreadsheets that went in free play for
the weekend. That was part of the deal. I liked a previous
spreadsheet that had a free play check next to it. It gave me a good
idea of what games would be there. Spreadsheet can only help the show.

At the risk of being redundant (and perhaps boring), I will reiterate
that these sheets have hurt the show. At first, I thought Mike's
original sheet was an innovative idea, and even listed a game that was
pre-sold. So I am guilty. But as the freeplay area manager - for
want of a better title - for quite a few years, you cannot imagine how
many games that were on the registered list for the show (Allentown)
never got there. The first year there were over 30 no shows, and
fortunately, the Heins had established a waiting list so most of the
spaces were filled in. Last year Ivan overbooked the freeplay area,
so this would not happen again. Please understand that it is an
excellent tool for finding out what is available, but unlike Shredso,
many of the listers could not give two craps about the show, as long
as they sell their games. Certainly, there are still games bought and
sold from the freeplay floor, but the fun of the show atmosphere has
been seriously reduced by these presales. The spreadsheet should be
used as a tool for sale, trade, or want - just as is RGP or the Mr.
Pinball site. Just don't relate it to Allentown, York or any other
event. Try discussing this with Brian and Denise Hein, Ivan
Lysykanycz, or Eric and Martin from York. These are the folks who
have put out their sweat and money to promote these events. Without
these shows on the East Coast this hobby becomes a hell of a lot less
fun.

The spreadsheet does not help the show though it might appear so. As
the promoter I see whats registered and what actually shows up. It
seems that many DMD and other desirable titles get grabbed up prior
to. This is a convenient practice for buyers and seller to fulfill
their needs. It’s a great way to wreck a show as well. If you got what
you wanted before the show, do you really need to come to the show? If
you knew what was coming thus removing the mystic of the show, you may
or may not decide to go. How does that help the show?

Fewer and fewer rare and desirable titles don’t come to shows because
they now reside in private collections. Providing a spectrum of
machines for everyone is challenging enough. So how does this
spreadsheet help? If it were so important for a show than why is not a
common practice for every show? If you think this is bullshit? Just
ask the former promoters how they felt about it.

The good news is that the spreadsheet has motivated me to continue to
build a collection that will be there. That I do have control of! It’s
a logistical nightmare to bring 25+ games for everyone to enjoy and
run a show. And when the show is over, we have to get them home. Not
sure how I’m pulling this off with this years schedule.

This year we are scheduled for the 4th and 5th of May. That’s right,
just a two day show as Sunday is a waste of time. We are moving into
the bigger hall so there will be more room I think. The flea market is
moving indoors as well. We have many challenges ahead. Its already
feeling like a train wreck.

Ivan, please know that is not my intention to turn the show into a
train wreck. Had I known that this was a big issue I would not have
done it (nor will I do this next year!!). Whether or not I buy a game
for this list, I will be at the show in Allentown, as I have for the
past few years.

to the illusion that this sheet actually helps a show. I’m sure the
intentions are good but that’s not what we see come show time. I also
know first hand of others that capitalize from it without regard. Why
wouldn’t they? It’s a great tool that’s available. I do know that some
will insist that the machine be there anyway which is appreciated.
That’s a good but seldom practice.

The train wreck comment was regarding our plans for this year. We are
blazing a new trail again. Its staging and returning the many machines
I have planned that has me worried. To have them ready for prime time
keeps me very busy and that promises nothing.

Thank God. This is a move that's long, long, long overdue.... but does
this mean that the show will run longer on Saturday/load out time should
be 6 instead of 4 at that point? Otherwise it'll be a ghost town after 4 ;)

> We are moving into the bigger hall so there will be more room I think.

Hope so. I'll be there helping as long as I don't have to climb into
the dirty ceiling again like at merchant's square.

On the same (bigger?) side? What's the square footage difference
between the 2. Any reason why the flea market isn't staying outside in
the parking lot area? (Does this mean there's going to be more parking
in that lot now?)

Yeah, just like it is every year. Sell me your AFM and I promise it'll
go to the show ;)

No worries, Ivan. I look forward to the show and I have to say that I
am glad that the flea market will be inside this year. I know that
there is an incredible amount of work and organization that takes
place to get this show in place. I just want you to know that I
understand your comments and I respect them. I meant no harm in
creating the spreadsheet.

From a different perspective (and I bring a game for free play). The
list is a great help for pin transfers between folks. The Allentown
show is a major trading place for the hobby and if someone makes a
presale you are still just as likely to get their paid admission, and
the show also needs that share of paid admission to survive too. If
everyone brought a game and got in free, then you would have limited
door return which would be a show killer too.

More so I'm worried about the fact that I hear the flea market is going
to be inside with the rest of the show. While this is great if it
rains, I for one love the ability to sit outside and socialize and get
out of the non stop noise in the show hall. I can only imagine how
noisy it will be to try and sit and socialize in an indoor flea market
with all the games going at the same time.

Now if the flea market gets it's own building in addition to the
show, then that would be cool. No weather problems there.

Just my thoughts,
Kory

I think there are several good things about having a spreadsheet. I
can't deny the reasons listed above regarding the free play area. I
restore pins and picked up two good projects in the flea market area
that I had known about from the list. I wanted to attend the show and
support the hobby, paid my entrance fee, bought some play field glass
inside. Played some games (though there were less of a selection) the
best being the ones Ivan brought IMHO. I can't stay for Saturday as I
have to work, so the Friday evening time slot works for me. I sold a
game in the parking lot ahead of time and the new owners were there
from Maryland to attend both days. Seems like these are mostly
positive things, except for the diluted free play area. (ok flame on)

I agree 1000% with Harry and Ivan.
Thanks again (in advance!) for taking on this event again in 2012!

Looking forward to it yet again!!

I mean having one stop for people to show up and exchange/buy/sell
games is great but you have to preserve the idea of the show as well.
Otherwise just have it at the Allentown Wal-Mart parking lot from
12-1 ;)

To put it into perspective: The Snap-on tool guy sells tools, however
he doesnt set up shop in the sears parking lot to do it. Nor does he
use the Sears name for his own financial gain. I am sure the show
promoters are aware that not every transaction in the world has to be
thru their venue, however dont do it in their face!

It's not about the list being "in their (the promoters') face".

People with games on the list are saying "I'm bringing this game to sell or
trade". Others are saying "I'll be at the show and want to buy game xxx".
What is happening in reality is that this occurs outside the show and enough
games fail to appear that the result is empty rows where machines should be.

It's a case of "looked good on paper", but without any way to bind the
buy/sell/trade to a physical appearance at the show, it's effect ends up
being counterproductive to the show's intent. The shows list vendors so why
not games? If anything, especially in this electronic age, the promoters
should publish their own list of game names but leave out owner-specific
information. That way one could see game "X" will be there. If you want to
buy/sell trade it, you make the appearance at the show.

For York 2011 all of my games on the spreadsheet were marked "Show only" and
I held to that for the 12 games I had listed. If everyone would hold to
that, yes, the spreadsheet would be a wonderful way to see what will be at
the show and to help with buy/sell/trade planning.

FWIW...

I recently spoke with Ivan about the show in hopes of him having some
speakers at the show. Maybe he could have a late night chat on sat.
nite after things die down. He could have JJP and maybe Sterns there how
cool would that be.

Nope, P3 is alive and well. Masters in about 2 weeks.
