I've gotten several emails about stern's upcoming Avatar premium LE.

Here is some of the particulars - for those wondering if stern planned a LE
version.

Additions to Avatar contained in the Avatar Limited Edition will include:
--Amp Suit with legs that march up and down, activated by solenoids
--Transporter cover that opens and closes, operated by an added motor
--A white pinball mixed among the silver balls and a sensor so that the
game will increase scoring when the white ball is in play
--Shaker motor assembly
--Added game rules and computer code to operate these added devices
--More figurines decorating the game, including
--Banshee figure hovering over the plastic ramp
--Colonel Quaritch inside the Amp suit
--Navi's mounted at the Navi target bank
--Increased number of control lamps and general illumination lamps
--Metal lower arch, enhanced with light up blue translucent windows
--Playfield support slides
--Traditional lockdown mechanism and front molding
--Playfields 1 to 25 will be signed
--Added playfield hard coat
--And of course full chrome package - side armor, lock bar, hinges, legs

Limited production, dump your old Avatar and order one of these today. LTG
:)

Errr, sounds very much like what the game should have been all along.

If this is for real I wonder how much Stern will add to the price for
those 'brave' enough to consider buying it.

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen

We are going to make a Premium Limited Edition version of our Avatar
pinball, and this Limited Edition will be unlike any we have done
before.

We are not just decorating the normal Pro version of this game. The
Avatar Limited Edition will have added game play and mechanical
features.

Like all fine art and collectibles, each game will be numbered, with
it's plaque and its authenticity certificate marked from number 1 of
250
to number 250 of 250.

Additions to Avatar contained in the Avatar Limited Edition will
include:
--Amp Suit with legs that march up and down, activated by solenoids
--Transporter cover that opens and closes, operated by an added motor
--A white pinball mixed among the silver balls and a sensor so that
the
game will increase scoring when the white ball is in play
--Shaker motor assembly
--Added game rules and computer code to operate these added devices
--More figurines decorating the game, including
--Banshee figure hovering over the plastic ramp
--Colonel Quaritch inside the Amp suit
--Navi's mounted at the Navi target bank
--Increased number of control lamps and general illumination lamps
--Metal lower arch, enhanced with light up blue translucent windows
--Playfield support slides
--Traditional lockdown mechanism and front molding
--Playfields 1 to 25 will be signed
--Added playfield hard coat
--And of course full chrome package - side armor, lock bar, hinges,
legs

The distributor price for Avatar Limited Edition with this really
exciting added package is $4,899. Games number 1 and 2 are already
committed to James Cameron and John Landau, the director and producer
of
the Avatar movie. As is the case with numbered art and numbered
remakes
of pinball machines, the very low numbered art and games warrant a
higher price when sold by you. The price from us for numbers 3 to 9
will be $5,299 and for 10 through 25 will be $4,999.

Production will be late this month. We will not require deposits as
we
have with some earlier Premium Limited Edition games and as has been
required for numbered remakes of pinball machines. As with our other
Premium models, there are no cash discounts or warranty allowances.
We
will require payment before delivery of these unique, numbered Avatar
Limited Edition pinball machines.

Best regards

Gary

They will probably lock all all of the LE additional programming so
that you can't add any of it to a non-LE model. This was done with a
different PAL chip (quite effectively so far) to the shaker code on
the LOTR LE.

Numbers 1-16 are already accounted for. I know because I am #16. I am
sure the first 25 will be gone VERY soon.. The signed playfield is
worth something.. I had absolutely zero intentions of buying an Avatar

I think it's a bit different since there are already 6000+ LOTRs out
there....I already have one and didn't feel the need to buy the LE. I
didn't like the signatures, the lack of figures, and I think the glass
looks a bit funky w/ the outlines. On the other hand - not many
people own an Avatar - and the extra features make it truly unique
compared to the regular model.

I'd put $50 on it. Not that you won't be able to still find them NIB
somewhere, but that no distributor will be able to buy one from Stern
because they'll have been sold out.

LOTR LE hasn't sold out because it could be pretty easily argued that
it is a downgrade from the original game and was significantly more
expensive than this. If this would have been priced at $6k and there
was 500 of them, it wouldn't be sold out yet.

It's not that...we're all just getting sucked into the crazy pinball
collector psychology of the thing. Hell, I'll admit it! There's just
something really cool about getting a limited version of a game w/

I haven't played it enough to feel comfortable saying just how great
or not great it is. I can say I don't like it as much as IM, but that
is going to be a hard pin to beat in my book always.

It seemed to be very solid. I don't know if it was $4200 solid or
not, but then again I don't buy games that are that expensive.
However, adding these other features (including ones that impact
gameplay) and making a run that is totally limited is a great way to
get the collector mentality to set in.

At best, you will have an EXTREMELY limited version of a game that is
really fun.

At worst, the new gameplay features will take away from the gameplay
itself, and you'll end up with an EXTREMELY limited version of a game
that is sorta fun.

The fact that it is a well known title basically guarantees at least
some protection of your initial investment. If it turns out it
doesn't play as good as the normal version, you'll probably only lose
a couple bucks on it (and the odd feature, the powerball thingie,
could be taken out and replaced with a steel ball to bring it back to
'normal' mode). If it turns out it makes the game play better, it's
almost a lock that it will appreciate in value.

Ordered Avatar LE just now. They are at aprox. #185 now. The rep I
Ordered from said they are building 200. That's a little different
then the email stated. If true and you want one....better do it now.
Found a local dist. from the stern list. Thanks Lloyd.

Could 50 of them be going overseas? Maybe that's the discrepancy?

Maybe it's more misinformation to try to get more sales.

Well, overseas sales are something to consider when it comes to
availability in the US. I think they could sell all 250 to US buyers,
which would save them the hassle of the alterations needed for an
overseas game....but who knows.

Downgrade?? The shaker motor option alone makes it worth it. Not to
mention the gold trim looks great and better then the black powder
coated crap. There was also more clear added to the PF and it had
Gomez's signature. Yes, the backglass might not be the greatest but
to say it is was a downgrade is ridiculous. And 5K is not a lot of
money for a NIB LOTR LE when people are still selling their HUO LOTR
for 4K+. And who cares if it did not come with the figures. Those
can be found easily for $100 on eBay and look a lot better mounted on
the LE plastics with museum putty then the original ones did on LOTR
with the holes and stupid zip ties.
